Chapter 80
Gemma

Shit! These idiots now really made me still stuck in the house till now. Cassian won’t allow me to step a foot out of this house again.
I didn’t know why he came back now. It was the middle of the day.
I wondered if he overheard me saying the necklace was probably
mine.
If I was wrong, this would be really awkward.
Seeing Cassian coming in, Claire was so happy. She had this look of “I can’t wait to prove you wrong,” even as she rushed to meet Cassian who was coming in.
“Cassian, Gemma said you gave her this necklace. But I heard Lucy has been collecting gems recently. Who is it really for?”
Cassian casually strolled up to me.
“She’s my wife. Show some respect.”
“Besides, didn’t you hear what she just said?”
Claire, clearly disappointed, dropped the gift back onto the table

and shot me a venomous glare. All I could do was laugh silently with my eyes.
Cassian just admitted the necklace was for me and even told them to respect me? Why does this all sound like he has lost his mind? For the past three years, he hasn’t even acted like I deserved any respect from his family.
“Cassian, people didn’t know who she was before. But you’re right. Now that they do, I really should show her some respect in public.”
Nathalia immediately stood up and called out Claire. “Show Gemma some respect, always. Not just in public. We’re family,
we have to be unified. What’s done is done, let’s move onto the next. But from here on out, I expect more.”
Cassian’s hands were still resting on my waist, and I could feel the heat of him when his hip brushed against mine. He was a master at putting on a show for his family. For him to pull up something like this after the fight we had this morning made me question–does he actually care about me, or is he just pretending?
With Cassian there, Nathalia got straight to the point.
“Cassian, we’re here about Claire’s job. She keeps asking when she can start working. As her cousin, you should care about this,” Nathalia said even as she tried to sound so persuasive.

“I don’t ask for much, Cassian. Just give me the Pack’s Creative Director position!”
“You know you don’t have any skills of sort,” Cassian said. his voice sharp. “You never bothered to learn anything. I don’t even know what you’ve been doing with your time. So how can you expect me to give you such an important position?”
Claire had always insisted on applying to big, prestigious design firms in the Pack and neighboring areas, but her chances were slim to none.
“This is how it’s going to happen. When you finally prove to me that you actually have something you’re good at, and I believe it, then we can talk,” Cassian finished, standing up and heading for the door.
The chef was busy cooking lunch. Sibille and the others had no plans to leave, so they were staying for the meal. An awkward silence fell over the room, even as they all looked at me as if 1 was the genesis of their problems.
Suddenly, Claire suggested, “Let’s play cards instead of jusi sitting here bored with nothing to do.”
One of the so–called ladies‘ favorite pastimes was playing cards. I didn’t like playing cards and wasn’t good at it either, but today they were short on people. The three women had no choice but to call me to join them.

“Gemma, come on! We’re all waiting for you. You can’t say no, right?”
“We’re family, so the stakes are low.”
In the end, Claire yanked me into her seat.
Unfortunately, less than a few minutes into the game, I lost the first round, and then i kept losing round after round.
Claire laughed so hard, I thought her eyes might pop out.
“You aren’t good at anything,” she said even as she shared the cards for the game.
“Gemma, don’t stress. Cassian’s loaded, so losing a few times is no big deal. Just think of it as paying for lessons!” Sibille and Nathalia said mockingly.
“You’ve played cards with the Blackwell family members so many times,” Claire continued. “Why can’t you ever win? You are just a pathetic loser.”
“Playing cards is just like doing business. You need to watch your opponents closely, not just stare at your own hand,” Sibille pretended to teach Gemma how to play cards, but her hands moved so fast that I couldn’t keep up.
I actually did figure that I was doomed to lose all day.

“Funny how y’all are here throwing shade at me, acting like playing cards is some kind of business, when none of you have anything really working out for yourselves,” I couldn’t help but
retort.
That was actually below the belt. I just told them all that they were parasites and were living on Cassian’s money. If it weren’t for him being Alpha, they would never have it this easy in the pack.
Sibille was about to answer me rudely, but after glancing up, she suddenly stopped.
“Why did she stop?” I wondered, and I turned around,
Cassian was standing right behind me.
