In the end, the butler turned and shut the last door that still offered Carol a way out.
As soon as he stepped out, sure enough, it didn’t take long before Carol’s screams echoed from inside the
room.
He waited until the screaming stopped before opening the door again.
Seeing Carol lying on the floor, covered in blood, a sharp pain twisted in the butler’s chest.
There was nothing he could change, so what was the point in caring?
He glanced at Albert, slumped on the sofa, panting heavily, with a bloodied cane lying at his feet–he didn’t need to ask what had just happened.
In a low voice, the butler said, “Sir, do you think the Waltons might come back? Should I have someone clean the living room?”
At that, Albert looked at Carol, unconscious on the floor, and finally felt a bit of relief.
He waved his hand. “Call a doctor. Don’t let her die.”
“Yes, sir.”
The butler then took Carol away and returned her to her room.
Albert watched the two figures disappear, slowly wiping his fingers clean one by one.
Only after venting on Carol did he feel any sense of peace.
Yes, she was the woman he had once insisted on marrying.
But that had been because he wanted what came with her.
Her father, back then, had power beyond imagination.
That was why Albert had pursued the marriage in the first place–to gain that advantage.
But now, her father was long dead.
And the daughter who had married in all those years ago? She had no more value to offer.
With that thought, the smile on Albert’s lips deepened.
He had nearly forgotten the most humiliating chapter of his life until this woman insisted on dragging it back up. She had no one to blame but herself.
Not long after, the butler returned.

“Sir, it’s been taken care of.”
“Mm. Good.”
Albert stood up and tossed the wet wipe in his hand into the trash can.
“If the Waltons come again, just tell them I’m not home. Say the house was empty earlier, which is why no
one answered the door.”
Albert thought it over–he couldn’t afford to fall out with the Waltons.
The Hayes Enterprises, though once backed by his wife’s father, had only benefited in the early stages when the company had just been founded.
Now that the old man was gone, Albert had no one left to rely on.
And the Walton project accounted for a significant portion of Hayes Enterprises‘ portfolio.
One wrong move, and everything would unravel.
This project absolutely couldn’t be altered.
The butler looked at Albert’s anxious face and found it somewhat laughable.
Still, he nodded. “Understood, sir.”
He returned to the gate to keep an eye on the situation outside.
In his heart, he couldn’t help but find Albert utterly ridiculous.
Beating his own wife half to death yet still putting money above all else.
The butler genuinely felt sorry for Carol.
After all these years, had she really not seen through what kind of man she had married?
Meanwhile, Albert once again reminded the butler to be respectful and courteous if the Waltons returned.
Also, they must not find out that Carol had been injured in the house.
After that, Albert went back to his usual habit–hiding in his second–floor study, where he could still observe what was going on downstairs.
He wasn’t sure why, but there was an unsettling feeling in his gut.
He couldn’t quite explain it, but he kept trying to reassure himself.
The butler was outside–everything would be fine.
Whatever happened, he’d be the first to know.
