Her little hand once again ‘accidentally‘ pressed against the yogurt stain, smearing it into an even larger patch.
The commotion finally caught the attention of the people nearby. Scarface rushed forward in a single stride, helping Mindy up. “Are you alright?”
At that moment, Wyatt came out of the private room at the sound. The instant he saw Mindy’s reddened eyes, he crouched down and pulled the little one into his arms. “Baby, what happened?”
Mindy clung to Wyatt’s neck, burying her small face in his shoulder. Her voice was pitiful yet loud enough for everyone to hear. “Mr. Wyatt, this lady said you’re someone else’s dad, that you have another puppy outside and won’t love me anymore… I got scared and spilled the yogurt by accident…”
Wanda, who had just struggled to her feet, froze pale at the child’s words. “N–no, Mr. Wyatt, I was just… I was just joking with the child…”
Wyatt’s gaze turned sharp, slicing through the air like a blade as it swept over Wanda. “A joke?”
He patted Mindy’s back lightly, his voice low and dangerous. “Telling my daughter that if I get a girlfriend, I won’t want her anymore? Ms. Wanda, do you find that joke amusing?”
“Your… your daughter?” Wanda looked as if she had been struck by lightning. “But isn’t it said outside that you have a son?”
The bystanders–both staff and customers–had already begun whispering.
“Who is this woman, saying such cruel things to a child?”
“Look at her all dressed up, but her heart is rotten!”
Wanda stood there with the pink yogurt stain glaring on her dress, her hair disheveled from the fall. Under the pointing fingers and whispered condemnation, she wished she could disappear.
Wyatt said coldly, “Yes, it’s a secret. I wasn’t planning on letting anyone know, but today you got lucky and happened to meet Mindy.”
Nestled in Wyatt’s arms, Mindy watched Wanda’s smug expression as he spoke. She silently shook her head. What a foolish lady.

If she had admitted her mistake right away and left, maybe Daddy would have let her she just had to know this secret. Now, even Daddy couldn’t save her.

But
Sure enough, the next second, Wanda was still grinning when Scarface clamped a hand over her mouth and dragged her out with force.
Wyatt turned, shielding Mindy from the scene. His voice softened. “Baby, do you want some ice cream?”
Mindy’s eyes instantly went wide, her little head nodding like a pecking chick.
Wyatt carried her into the restaurant and ordered her favorite strawberry ice cream.
In the corner of the high–end restaurant, Wyatt’s own ice cream had melted into a puddle. He sighed heavily, glancing at his phone for the fifth time–still no reply from Yunice.
Across from him, Mindy sat in a child’s chair, battling a mountain of strawberry ice cream with her silver spoon, her cheeks flushed and puffed.
“Mindy,” Wyatt suddenly leaned closer, his expression grave. “I’ve got big trouble.”
Mindy instantly guarded her ice cream cup with both arms. “You can’t take mine!”
“Not the ice cream,” he lowered his voice. “Mommy’s angry. I need help.”
He slid over an extra chocolate–dipped cone as ‘payment‘.
The little girl licked the cone, her eyes rolling mischievously. “Because of the bad lady just now?”
Wyatt gave a sullen grunt of acknowledgment.
Mindy shook her head like a little adult. “Daddy, you’re silly! You need to give her flowers!” She held out a hand smeared with chocolate sauce. “And take me and Mommy to Disney!”
Wyatt burriedly grabbed a wet wipe to clean her hand. “Those are already arranged. Anything… more special?”
Mindy suddenly crooked her finger mysteriously. Wyatt bent down, playing along.
“Daddy, beat your chest like a gorilla!” Her eyes sparkled. “Mommy laughed forever when she
saw that in a cartoon!”
Wyatt’s expression cracked. …Can we try something else?”

“Or wear a dress and sing Let It Go?”
Wyatt swallowed hard, his mind flashing with the image of himself in a blue sequined dress, pounding his chest while singing Let It Go. He realized there was a difference between making Yunice furious and making her sick to her stomach.
“Baby,” he patted his daughter’s head heavily, “thank you for your suggestions. Daddy should just go home and reflect.”
When Yunice pushed open the front door, a faint scent of durian mingled with the cool air conditioning greeted her.
She rubbed the ache in her neck after a string of surgeries. Before she could even change her shoes, the sight in the living room froze her in place.
On the expensive marble floor sat a bed of nails.
And the man who, in the mall, had been decisive and fearsome, the one everyone looked up to with awe–Wyatt–was sitting upright upon it, perfectly dressed in his suit, his expression solemn, reflecting.
