The moment we begin sparring, I realize I’m not the only one who has been training.
“Christian?” I ask.
“Yes. Alpha spends time every day training me and Shane.”
“It shows, Braden,” I say.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me. I’m about to come at you harder,” I say, and I do.
I’m not sure who Christian was testing, me or Braden, but we’re very evenly matched. I get lost in the battle; ducking, punching, leaping, and kicking. I take hits and I land hits, but neither of us go down.
I can tell that Braden is enjoying our battle just as much as I am when I hear Christian’s voice boom nearby. “DRAW!”
We both stop, startled out of the cocoon of battle that we’ve been in. When I look around, I realize that everyone has stopped and is watching us.
“Damn!” Sebastiana says and begins to clap. The others around us begin to clap as well.
I turn and smile at Braden. “Well done.”
“I think they’re clapping for you.”
“I think they’re clapping for us,” I say, making him smile.
“That was one hell of a sparring match,” Shane says, handing me a towel and tossing one to Braden.
“How long were we fighting?” I ask, wiping the sweat from my face, neck, and chest.
“Two hours,” Christian says, making me stop and stare at him.
“Two …” Braden says, turning to look at me.

I shrug, letting him know that I had no idea either.
Christian looks at me. “Well done. Let’s look at the warrior curriculum today. You may want to do something similar to what I did. Declare the warrior curriculum as your primary and take the pack management classes as your electives.”
“I’m so bummed I have to leave today. I need to stay so I can spar with Enya more.” Sebastiana pouts.
“I’m sure you’ll be back before you know it, Sebi,” Christian says to her.
“Not soon enough,” Shane says. I get the impression that Shane had a better time last night than Sebastiana did.
While Sebastiana goes to finish packing her things, I check in with the kitchen omegas and begin a new order for food.
When I hear her coming back down the stairs, I go to say goodbye, hugging her tightly.
“I’ll miss you, bestie.”
“I’ll miss you too,” I tell her.
“Thanks for the ideas. I’m going to take you up on them.”
“I can’t wait to hear what you find out.”
She holds on to me for a couple more beats, then releases me to go hug Christian.
“Bye, Sebi. Drive safe. Let me know you got home safely. Say hi to everyone for me.”
“Thanks, Christian. I’ll see you soon.
“I’ll walk you out, T,” Shane says. She waves once more, and we stay inside while Shane walks Sebastiana out.
“Ready to go look at the Academy’s curricula, Enya?” Christian asks.
“Yeah, yeah I think I am,” I say.

“Tiana, is everything okay?” I ask her. Something has felt off all morning.

She stops and rather than answering, she looks like she’s thinking through her response. Since this isn’t like her, I know something is wrong.
“Just say it. T‘
“I don’t know, Shane. Last night was… I thought it would be better, and it wasn’t.”
I feel like she just squeezed my heart in her hands and crushed it.
“It wasn’t good for you?” I ask, my voice coming out in a squeak.
She looks like she doesn’t want to answer but she shakes her head no.
