“Yes, but how many years will you be an Alpha? It’s worth taking time now to make the right decision so that the rest of your years leading this pack are easier.”
He nods again. “I’ll meet with Braden after dinner, and we can start making our list.”
“Excellent. Now, are you ready for our sparring session?”
He grins. “Hell yeah! That’s the best part of my day.”
Shane is quickly getting better at sparring. He wasn’t bad to begin with, but he’s getting smarter in his fighting technique.
While we spar, I let him know I asked Enya to organize the pack hospital.
“Oh, thank goodness,” he says, grunting when I get in a hit. “That was going to take forever.
“Another reason you’ll need to start making time to spend with her every day. You’ve only got a couple of months before she’s gone.”
“How am I going to get everything done, Christian?” he asks, stopping and staring at me.
“One day at a time. You do what you can. You prioritize, you get what has to get done, done. And then you start knocking out the other things that are on your list. Being this busy is also a good opportunity to see if your potential Gammas can handle the pressure of the job.”
“It’s a lot,” he says. I can see the weight of being an Alpha starting to settle on his shoulders.
“Hey, remember, you’re not alone. I’m here until you officially take over. By the time you go to the Academy next year, you’ll have your Gamma, you will have learned how to manage this pack without Enya, and you’ll feel more comfortable in your position. It’s not like I’m going to walk out of your life, and you’ll never see me again, Shane. I’m hoping that you and I can remain friends after this.”
“I’d really like that, Christian. I know you’ll go on to some other job, but I’d like to stay in touch.”

“I’ll always be a phone call away if you need me, Shane. And once you meet your mate, I expect an invitation to her Luna ceremony.”
“I’d be insulted if you weren’t here,” he says.
“Good. Now, show me you remember how to block that punch to your kidneys I just landed,” I say, and we begin sparring again.
By the time we’re done, I can tell that his mind is clearer. He’s still struggling with the pressures of becoming an Alpha, but I know he’ll get there.
I refuse to let him fail.
Enya
I spent most of the day trying to inventory the storage room in the pack hospital. What I realized is that no one really takes ownership of the space and because of that, everything is everywhere.
Rather than being able to set up an ordering system, I had to first come up with a process for organizing the storage room so I could inventory what we currently have. Then I needed to better understand how to organize the items in a categorization that makes sense to Dr. Charles and Nurse Linda.
By the time I got through with that, it was time for afternoon warrior training and dinner. Since Christian set it up that we split up at mealtimes to spend time with the pack, I didn’t get a chance to tell him about the issues I’d encountered. And since I know that he spends time with Shane right after dinner, I made sure the omegas were set for the evening, then went up to my room.
