Chapter 178
Enya begins showing me how they make sure that the food is laid out so it’s easy for the pack to access and create a line so they can get food quickly and easily before going to sit and eat.
“If you don’t set it up right, it can be a real problem. We basically have a two-hour window for pack members to come get food, but if the food isn’t laid out properly, then a hundred pack members won’t be able to get through the line in time.”
“Like what? Give me an example of how you could put the food out of order,” I say, just as Shane walks up.
“T, what are you doing?” My very first thought is that he’s using my nickname again. Christian was right, which he usually is, even if it is unbearably annoying to admit. Me helping Shane is making a difference.
“I’m helping with food preparation,” I say proudly, hoping he sees that I’ve been working hard to help Enya. I know Christian said I should figure it out for myself, but I would never, in a million years, have figured this out for myself.
When I ask if he’s able to meet for dinner later, I’m thrilled that he says yes. As soon as he walks away to get our picnic basket, I turn back to Enya.
“If you need to go…” she begins.
“No, this is important. I’ve realized just how much I DON’T know today about pack management,” I say.
“Okay, well, to answer your earlier question, if you do something like, put the salad dressing before the salad, people will have to cut back in line to come get the dressing and it makes a huge mess and causes things to slow down. The same is true with gravy or anything that goes on top of the food. That should always come after the dish that it’s covering.”
She continues to tell me ways to make the line move faster and easier and as she does, she moves things around to make sure that everything is moving in the correct, organized order.
“And, I guess that’s it, unless you have any questions,” she says.
“No, thank you, Enya. Today has been eye opening for me. I really appreciate your patience

with me.”
“Sebastiana, you’ve been a huge help today. This would have taken me two days and now I’m done! I have no idea what I’m going to do tomorrow now,” she says, grinning. I’m sure there’s plenty of work to do tomorrow and the next day and every day after that.
As tired as I am, when I walk up to Shane who is watching me closely, I smile.
“Ready?” I ask.
He tilts his head at me. “Ready.”
We walk in silence other than to say hello to the pack members who have already learned my name and are calling out to me. Many call out to Shane as well, but that’s not nearly as surprising to me as the ones calling out to me.
Once we’re outside, I feel the doubt creeping back into my gut. I fight myself for courage, I’ve never needed to dig so deep to find before and just as Shane turns to me, his mouth open to say something, I leap.
courage
“Let me go first!”
“Okay,” he says slowly. “Go ahead.
”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for how I left things last week. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings because I acted before thinking. I tend to be impulsive and I didn’t mean to hurt you. I think I did and I’ m sorry for that. I really like you, Shane. I want to try and work things out.”
