They only had a couple of hours before they set off, neither of them had really gotten any sleep.
The bed was uncomfortably hard, and Chris’s nerves were on edge–he woke up every hour or two.
“Then I’ll see you at home,” said Jessica as she stood in front of Chris, helping him button his shirt. “But once I
get back, Collin and the others will definitely want to meet up–it’s kind of a miracle we survived.”
“Don’t keep saying things like that.” Chris lowered his eyes, looking visibly distressed. “When I had no news
from you, I was worried the whole time.”
“Okay. Next time I won’t come to places this dangerous. Until the area around here is properly repaired, we
definitely won’t return. Even the project team is moving to the city center–they’ll have to wait until we get
back to sort things out. Our car probably won’t leave until around noon.”
“A few of the injured need to be transferred to the hospital. We’ll be leaving earlier. See you at home.”
“Alright.”
Jessica held Chris’s hand and walked him to the door. Chris didn’t show any reluctance to leave, but with every few steps he took, he would turn back to glance at Jessica.
She stood right at the doorway, and every time Chris looked back, she waved at him with a smile.
“Geez, the two of you…” Indya stood off to the side with arms crossed.
The rain had stopped, and the sun was out. After a natural disaster, sunlight like this felt like being reborn.
Indya sighed and said, “Back when you acted, you made us believe you really hated Chris–like you couldn’t even stand to look at him. And now… the two of you are so clingy, even after five or six years of marriage.
Seriously?”
Jessica gave Indya a side glance, and from the corner of her eye saw Anthony heading toward the emergency stairwell. She didn’t close the door–just left it open, letting the sunlight land on her.
“You do know emotions and work should be kept separate, right?” asked Jessica.
Indya lit a cigarette, not bothering to hide it from Jessica, and casually waved the smoke away.
“Have I ever made you feel like I can’t keep them separate?”

That was true–she hadn’t.

Jessica leaned against the doorframe just like her, and since no one else was around, she said quietly, “Blake’s a decent guy. Anthony though–just looking at him makes me feel dirty. If you can’t keep him in check, I’ll just replace him.”
“I’d like to too, but isn’t Anthony’s project team bound by contract?” Indya gave Jessica a meaningful look, as if
asking how exactly she planned to replace him.
Jessica immediately understood the implication behind her words.
“The project is mine. If I want to replace him, I can. It’s just a matter of how. I’ll have Shannon handle it. Anthony’s the type you should steer clear of–once you get tangled up with someone like him, it’s hard to break
free. And as for Blake…”
Indya cut her off with a raised hand, cigarette still between her fingers. “Give it a rest. You’re my boss, not my mom. Why are you so worried about my love life? If I get married and have kids, do I need to take leave? Are you
going to cover all my
work?”
ン
“What are you talking about?” Jessica smirked. “Your wedding’s only one day. Giving birth–also just a short leave, right? Isn’t it something you can do in your spare time between projects? And besides…” She glanced at Blake, who had just come downstairs. “He’s an award–winning actor. The entertainment industry is a mess— he might not even want kids.”
The conversation started drifting, but Jessica just followed the thread for fun. She hadn’t expected Indya to take
it seriously.
She said, “You’re overthinking it. Blake did say he wants to pursue me, but I’m not planning on saying yes. We’re not from the same world–no need to force things,”
