A moon cycle later, Lydia received a mind–link message from me. Her best she–wolf was getting ready for her blood bond ceremony and invited her to be a bridesmaid! Lydia was overjoyed; she immediately put down everything she was doing, bought a sky–sled ticket, and prepared to fly over. Ethan, of course, also learned the news from his sister.
His hand paused, then he lowered his eyes and asked, pretending not to care.
“She’s preparing for a blood bond so soon?” His wolf growled in protest.
Over the past moon cycle, he had often heard about my updates from his sister and knew I had a he–wolf who loved me deeply – but he hadn’t expected that I was already about to be bound.
He couldn’t quite describe the feeling in his heart; Ethan only felt his vision blurring, unable to clearly see the runes under his pen. He heard a gentle voice come from the other end of Lydia’s mind–link.
“Yeah, it’s about time I was bound. I finally found my fated mate, and I don’t want to wait anymore.”
It was me. My voice was soft, but there was a smile in it; one could tell right away I was living very happily.
Lydia was packing things up while talking to me via mind–link.
“Yeah, for sure. But are you planning to settle down abroad and not come back to the Ashen Pack territory? You’ll still have to trouble me to run around; you little heartless one, you don’t even know to come find me.”
She scolded with a laugh, quickly finished packing her sky–sled, and turned to wave at Ethan.
“I’m off, Ethan!”
Ethan didn’t speak. Not until Lydia had walked far away, until her back was no longer visible and my voice from the mind–link could no longer be heard, did he slowly put down the pen he was using to approve documents and press his palm against his forehead. Tears fell. His heart ached so much he felt like he was suffocating. So this was what it felt like to watch the she–wolf he deeply loved bound to someone else. He had truly lost me. His wolf gave a low, mournful whine.
He trembled, unable to stop his painful tears, and cried out in suppressed agony.
Another moon cycle passed, and Lydia got bound too. I returned to the country and served as her bridesmaid as promised.
He hadn’t seen me for a long time. Ethan controlled his emotions, as he placed his sister’s hand in his mate at the wedding. Immediately, his gaze uncontrollably landed on me. My scent, so sweet and familiar, nearly brought him to his knees. His wolf yearned for me, howled in despair.
My bridesmaid dress was simple yet beautiful, attracting him so much that his breathing became shallow, as if afraid to disturb this
dream.
After the wedding, Ethan accompanied his sister to toast, and they arrived at my table.
“Zoe, long time no see!” Lydia said with a smile.
Ethan calmly nodded, “Long time no see, Zoe.”
He reached out his hand, and his glass gently clinked against mine. The crisp sound echoed in his excited heart. He wanted to say so much, such as, you’ve changed a lot, how have you been, are you happy, you… The scent of happiness surrounded me, a painful reminder of what he had lost.

All those impulses stopped the moment a he–wolf walked up; that was my mate.
The he–wolf put his arm around my waist and took the glass of wine for me.
“Sony, Zoe is carrying a pup, so she can’t drink. I’ll drink it on her behalf.” His scent was strong, marking me as his. Ethan’s wolf
snarled.
My face flushed slightly, while Lydia was surprised.
“You’re carrying a pup! Zoe, why didn’t you tell me? Don’t you love me anymore?”
I quickly explained, with a hint of bashful shyness.
“It’s only been a moon cycle. I wanted to wait a while, until it’s stable, before telling you. It’s still too early now.”

Lydia certainly didn’t agree with that; she immediately booked the pup–mother position, carefully and joyfully stroking my flat belly, my mate’s eyes filled with tenderness and doting, and I also wore a look of helpless happiness. My scent radiated contentment, a knife twisting in Ethan’s heart.
The three of them gathered together, only Ethan seemed like an outsider. His wolf retreated into the shadows, defeated.
Turns out the best ending is to become strangers.
He stared blankly at my happy face, my gentle movements, seeing me and my mate leaning intimately together, his heart ached dully.
He raised his wine glass and murmured to me.
“Congratulations, you’ve finally found your happiness.”
After speaking, he downed it in one gulp, feeling for the first time that this wine was so pungent and spicy. His wolf howled in despair, tasting the bitter dregs of regret.
He quietly left, no longer disturbing us.
A gust of wind blew past, I looked up, only to find that the spot was already empty.
I was momentarily dazed, then shook my head; now the most important people to me were already by my side. My wolf settled, content
and at peace.
