Chapter 7
When I pushed open the front door, Layla was sitting on the couch with a face mask on.
Seeing me come in, she jumped up.
A cute panda face mask, bright sparkling eyes–she looked lively and adorable.
“Chloe! You’re finally home!”
She was wearing my pajamas–the ones Grandma had made for me by hand last year.
“Why are you wearing my clothes?”
I felt like I was seeing ten years ago all over again, when she insisted on taking my teddy bear.
But that was mine.
1 never saw those friends who’d pooled their money for my bear again.
These pajamas were mine.
Grandma would never make me clothes again.
I was falling apart, furious. My hands started shaking.
So many emotions hit me all at once, stuck in my throat, but I couldn’t say a word.
Layla froze, then pouted like she was about to cry.
I’ve never worn anything Grandma made by hand. I just wanted to try it on.”
“If you’re upset, I’ll take it off right now.”
Just then, Dad finished organizing the stuff in the trunk and came inside, only to see Layla’s face–so upset that even her face mask couldn’t hide her grievance.
“Chloe, did everything I said in the car go in one ear and out the other? You’re already giving your sister a hard time.”
“No, Dad. I wore Chloe’s clothes. I’ll go change right now.”
You’re seriously gonna make a big deal out of one piece of clothing?”
“You’re sisters. What’s wrong with sharing? Is it gonna kill you?”
He walked over and gently patted Layla’s head.
“If she doesn’t want you to wear it, just go change. If you like the fabric, I’ll have your mom buy you a new one tomorrow.”
“You can’t buy this, Dad. Grandma made it by hand for Chloe.”
I just… I wanted to know what it felt like to wear something Grandma made. I…”
With that, she started crying
Like she’d been wronged beyond belief.
Like Grandina had somehow failed her.
But originally, Grandina made everything in pairs.
During holidays, when Layla visited, Grandma would happily bring out the clothes she’d made for her
She thought if I liked them, Layla would too.
But what did Layla do?

the looked them over and threw them on the floor.
Said they were too tacky, asked if Grandma was trying to make her classmates laugh at her.
Mom and Dad backed her up. The city’s different from the country.”
Just make things for Chloe from now on. Don’t bother with Layla–she wont wear them.”
They were the ones who looked down on Grandma’s gifts.
They were the ones who didn’t want them
But now, somehow it was Grandma who’d wronged Layla
