Chapter 7

Debra scoffed and shouted back, “Stop playing the victim! If it hadn’t been for you, would I have ended up in this miserable state?

Have some shame, you freeloader!”

Isaiah was enraged by her words. His gaze darkened, and his chest heaved with anger.

In his fury, he stormed back to his car, slammed on the accelerator, and charged toward her. Debra was knocked to the ground.

Blood pooled around her.

Isaiah’s car lost control and veered into the guardrail. Then, he was immediately arrested by the police.

Debra’s life ended during the ambulance ride to the hospital, while Isaiah had completely ruined his future-he was sentenced to

prison for intentional harm.

And so the farcical identity fraud concluded with both of them paying the price.

After this absurd drama, I was finally able to officially attend college. Though it was more than half a year later than I’d planned,

everything gradually started to fall into place.

Dad began to reduce his business commitments back home and planned to spend more time with me. Over a period of time, we

steadily grew closer.

One afternoon, Dad and I were taking a walk by the campus and catching up on life.

He looked at me and said with an unusual hint of concern in his voice, “Debbie, these past six months have been tough on you.

Since you’ve settled here, maybe it’s time to meet your fiancé.”

I immediately rolled my eyes, protesting, “Dad, not this again! Didn’t the whole mess start because of this? Aren’t you afraid

there’ll be more trouble?”

Just then, a deep and gentle voice of a man came from behind us. It was smooth and captivating, like the pluck of a violin string.

“Excuse me, are you Ms. Deborah Larson?”

I froze for a moment.

As a musician, I was particularly attuned to voices-especially one like this. It was so captivating that it made my heart skip a

beat.

Unable to resist, I turned around to see a tall and slender figure. His black shirt accentuated his sharp, refined features, while his

gentle, charming smile made my heart flutter.

He leaned forward slightly and spoke softly, “Hello, I’m Isaiah Joubert.”

My eyes lit up with joy. This man’s appearance and demeanor were the epitome of the perfect rich, handsome man—a far cry

from the imposter I’d encountered before.

The contrast couldn’t have been more striking!

I quickly composed myself and assumed a more graceful posture. I responded gently, “Nice to meet you, Mr. Joubert.”

Dad observed the subtle change in my demeanor and couldn’t help but chuckle. He teased, “Weren’t you just saying you weren’t interested in traditional arranged marriages? Why are you so invested now?”

I pretended not to hear him and kept smiling at Isaiah.

A sense of unexpected happiness stirred within me. I’d once strongly opposed the idea of an arranged marriage, but now, I didn’t find it quite so unthinkable.

Isaiah smiled slightly as though seeing through me, then said, “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I look forward to getting to know you better.”

His voice was deep and soothing, carrying a sense of warmth and composure.

Perhaps all these strange twists of fate had been leading me to him.
