After we got back from my parents’ place, Dewayne stayed quiet and low-spirited for days.Â
He still acted like nothing mattered, but every now and then, I caught flashes of hurt in his eyes.Â
After his shower, he flopped onto the couch like always. I stepped in front of him.Â
“Dewayne, let’s talk.”Â
He looked surprised, but scooted over and patted the seat.Â
“What’s up with you lately? Spare me the cover-up. I can tell. Ever since you punched Sebastian, you’ve been off.”Â
He opened his mouth, then stopped, eyes on mine, dead serious.Â
“Can you tell that I love you?”Â
I froze. That was the last thing I saw coming.Â
“I fell for you at that party seven years ago. Marrying you was never about some business deal. It was the day I had been waiting for.”Â
Seven years ago?Â
I kind of remembered that night, not because I had a great memory, but because after it, Sebastian started acting weird around me.Â
Seeing me piece it together, Dewayne continued, “When some guy dissed Sebastian, you grabbed a bottle and smashed it on his head. I had never seen a girl like that.Â
“Feelings are weird. At first, I thought you were cute, and next thing I knew, I was stuck on you.”Â
He gave a wry laugh.Â
“I never thought I’d be the type to wait around for seven years for a girl.”Â
The room went quiet.Â
After a while, I asked, “So Sebastian’s words have got to you?”Â
“Yeah. I’m scared you’ll go back to him.”Â
I let out a soft sigh, thought for a second, then wrapped my arms around him.Â
“It’s not gonna happen. We’re already married. It’s you and me till the end.”Â
After the talk, Dewayne stuck to me like a shadow and still found time to spill the tea on Sebastian.Â

Chapter 8Â
11 288 Wouchers After Mom and Dad kicked Sebastian out, his life of being waited on hand and foot was gone. He had to work to make a living.Â
Clara was still pissed that he lied to her and wanted payback. They fought nonstop, then somehow ended up in bed to- gether.Â
Now, she asked for 800,000 dollars, or she’d send him to jail. With no other option, he had to work eight jobs a day.Â
Dewayne showed me a pic of how he looked now. The gentle, refined young man I remembered was gone. He was completely worn down and scruffy, hair in disarray, chin stubbly. After only two weeks, I barely recognized him.Â
Dewayne caught my reaction and smirked. He fixed his collar, puffed his chest, and cleared his throat.Â
“So, your hubby is hot, right?”Â
I nodded.Â
He grinned like a kid, pecked my cheek, and bolted.Â
“I… I’ll check on dinner!”Â
Seeing him scurry off all flustered, I couldn’t help but smile to myself.Â
Growing old with this guy sounded pretty great.Â
