Chapter 6

My mother tapped the table. “Personal matters aren’t up for discussion at the Mansfield Group.”

She nodded toward the door. “Breezy, see our guests out.”

Darion suddenly grabbed my wrist. “Breanna, say something. You can’t just walk out on me like this.”

My wrist hurt from his tight grip.

Kaleigh’s face turned pale. “Ms. Mansfield, we were wrong. Please forgive us. For Mr. Floyd’s sake, can you give us

another chance?”

“Please leave,” the secretary said, already holding the door open.

“Get off me!” Darion shoved the guard aside and lunged toward me. “Have you forgotten our promise by the lake?

“You said you wanted a wedding on the frozen lake, with you in a mermaid dress and me in a tuxedo. And we’d have everyone dancing on the ice. I even had the wedding ring ready.

His voice suddenly choked. “It’s at the bottom of my safe.”

I broke free from his grasp. I had thrown that ring into the river just last week.

“Darion,” I said coldly, “I waited for you all night at the airport. When I burned with fever and passed out, where were you? You were posting wedding photos with her on Instagram.”

He suddenly sneered, “I get it now. You planned this all along, didn’t you? You faked being poor to approach me, and once I was hooked, you dumped me to humiliate me.”

His eyes sharpened. “You never loved me. You just wanted to get back at me.”

The security guards finally escorted them out.

Down the hallway, Darion’s roar echoed, “Kaleigh, didn’t you say you could land the deal with the Mansfield Group?”

“Bullshit!” Kaleigh screamed. “If you hadn’t provoked her, would the company be ruined?”

Next came the clear sound of a slap, followed by scuffling.

I used the internal line to reach the Finance Department. “Calculate the damage in the hallway and send the bill to the Floyd Group.”

After hanging up, my assistant knocked and entered. “Ms. Mansfield, the Floyd Group has filed for bankruptcy pro- tection. The Investment Department asked whether to participate in the auction.”

I nodded slightly. I’d worked hard on those projects, after all.

In the days that followed, I devoted all my efforts to the new ventures.

I worked until midnight every day, spending all my time handling documents.

By doing so, I also wanted my mother to know that I was no longer the foolish girl who’d risk everything for love.

During lunch, my mother came to my office and said, “Breezy, you handled the Floyd Group matter very well.”

Then she changed the subject. “But you need a partner to help manage the Mansfield Group. You should think about it.”

My fork clicked slightly against the plate. All at once, a sense of frustration settled in my chest.
