Chapter 4
After they left, my phone rang.
It was my aunt.
The moment I heard her voice, tears welled up and streamed down my cheeks.
Hearing me sobbing, she quickly asked what had happened.
I told everything that had happened over the past two days. She sighed and asked gently, “Have you really made up your mind? Do you want to come live with me?”
Years ago, my aunt had made a fortune overseas and had long been financially independent.
When James and I were just starting our company, she had suggested I come work for her–but under one condition: any money she earned would belong solely to me, with no access for James.
I knew James’s pride would never allow it, so I had refused.
Now, wanting to leave James, my only refuge was my aunt.
Fortunately, she held no grudges and forgave the impulsive, love–blinded choices I had made in the past. Once we finalized the timing, a heavy weight lifted from my heart.
I stood and looked at the house in front of me. We had bought it three years ago.
Back then, to move in quickly, we balanced project work with the renovations, sleeping only four hours a night, just to create a home tailored to our style.
This was the first house James and I had ever owned together. Even when he later suggested switching to a riverside villa, I had refused.
And now, I had to say goodbye to the place that held all our memories.
The next day, I contacted a lawyer and had a divorce agreement drafted.
That evening, James was already home.
He shot me an impatient look.
“Today was Susan’s first day, and she landed a major deal. As for you ruining her welcome party, she doesn’t care at all. But shouldn’t you go and apologize?”

“Apologize? What do you want me to do?” I asked.
James’s expression grew stern. “Go to Susan. Apologize to her. Admit that what you did that day
was wrong.”
I stayed silent for a few seconds, gripping my bag tightly. The divorce agreement rested quietly inside.
“Fine, I’ll go now,” I said.
James’s face registered disbelief. He hadn’t expected me to agree so easily.
I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm, his voice trembling slightly. “You’re really going to apologize to Susan?”
I gave him a faintly amused look. Wasn’t he the one insisting I apologize?
“Yes. Didn’t you say it yourself? Susan’s talented and brings value to the company. As one of its founders, I should be gracious.” .
James released my wrist. “Good. While you’re at it, bring her a late–night snack. She doesn’t eat spicy food or green onions, loves cilantro–don’t get it wrong.”
Even though my heart felt numb, hearing him remember Susan’s preferences so clearly hit me like a punch in the chest.
“Got it,” I said.
I turned and left. Soon, I arrived at Susan’s apartment. The moment she saw me, she sneered.
She opened her mouth to mock me, but I cut straight to the point, “I know you haven’t given up on James. I’m here to give you this opportunity.”
Her expression shifted. A few minutes later, I left her apartment. I had signed the divorce agreement; James’s signature would be taken care of.
That night, I didn’t return home. I booked the next available flight to my aunt’s country.
While I was checking in, Susan had already finalized everything.
James trusted her completely. Without even glancing up, he had signed the divorce agreement.
Once I confirmed he had signed, I breathed a sigh of relief.

Before boarding, I sent James a message:
[Since you’ve already signed the divorce agreement, I will have my lawyer handle the rest of the proceedings.]
The moment the message went through, James called.
“What are you talking about? What divorce agreement? When did I sign-”
He stopped mid–sentence, flipping through his folder. Seeing his signature on the divorce agreement, his body stiffened, and he nearly lost his balance.
“Hailey, I will not agree to this divorce.”
He grabbed the phone, shouting at me in panic. I let out a soft laugh.
“You’ve already signed the agreement. The rest, I’ll have my lawyer handle.”
