Chapter 7
I stood up and motioned for Chris to go back. He glanced at me, pouting in frustration, but obediently retreated.
Seeing me, James’s exhausted face softened into a faint smile.
“Hailey, come back with me. I’ve already started preparing our wedding. Do you want it by the
beach or on the lawn? I’ll make it exactly how you want it.”
I let out a light sigh as I looked at him. “James, the divorce is now entirely in my lawyer’s hands.
Don’t come looking for me anymore.”
“Why? Just because I let Susan join the company? If you really don’t like her, I’ll make her leave.
Please… don’t divorce me.
James’s eyes reddened at the corners. “Hailey, you know how much I love you. My life can’t exist
without you.
Let me explain–the rings were the clerk’s mistake. When I took Susan to pick her welcome gift, she liked one ring. The clerk accidentally made it a pair.
There’s nothing between us. I only valued her professional abilities. I was foolish to poach her from another company. If you don’t approve, I’ll fire her immediately. Okay?”
I watched him silently, then laughed softly.
“James, you really don’t know Susan likes you, do you? Back then, she and I were both vying for your attention, and you chose me.
She resented me and used you as an excuse to trick me into that dangerous building. You’re smart -how could you not see that she’s in love with you?
You brought her into the company to take advantage of her feelings, to make her work for you and the company, didn’t you?”
My words pierced straight to his thoughts. Panic flickered across his face.
“James, in these years of business, you’ve changed a lot. The time I’ve spent away from you—I’ve lived well. As for the wedding… it was never really for me. It was your promise. You didn’t keep it before, and I don’t need it now. Please, just leave.”

My voice was icy. James stood in the snow, looking pitiful. Just as I was about to close the door, he grabbed the frame.
“Hailey, I really don’t want a divorce. If you don’t believe in my love and won’t come back, I’ll stand here at the door… all night, until you change your mind.”
“Do as you please.”
I left those words behind and shut the door.
I hadn’t expected him to truly wait outside all night.
The next morning, when I opened the door, James collapsed against me.
His body was burning up, and his face was unnaturally red.
My aunt brought over a thermometer. On his forehead, it read nearly 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
“Hailey… you’re willing to see me…
>>
Seeing me, he opened his eyes. “Does this prove my sincerity…?”
At that moment, it was impossible not to waver.
I couldn’t just ignore him—after all, he had once saved my life. I couldn’t forget the way he had cried and screamed while pulling me out from the ruins of that building.
In the end, my aunt and I helped James to his room. She gave him fever medicine and cold medicine, then, once he had fallen asleep, called me aside.
“Hailey, you mustn’t let your guard down. This man is too obsessive. He risks his life to achieve his goals. Someone like that is dangerous.”
