Chapter 24

At that moment, Yuna and her men were completely distracted by Timothy’s crying and Jason’s bloody state.

Sean and I exchanged a look. This was our chance.

The instant Sean gave the signal, several muffled gunshots cracked through the air above the island. One by one, the men behind Yuna dropped, each taken out with clean, silent shots from the Special Operations Unit. Not a single one was left standing.

At the same time, Sean and I moved in. Our hidden weapons flew through the air, striking with precision and knocking the knife from Yuna’s hand.

She stared at her empty palm in shock, then at the bodies of her fallen allies, disbelief written all over her face.

I stepped toward her slowly, looking down at her from above. “Yuna, you’re not that naive. Did you really think we came here without back up?”

She froze, like someone waking from a bad dream. Realizing it was over, she suddenly started laughing wildly. Her eyes turned vicious. “If I’m going to die today, I’m taking someone with me!” She bolted toward Timothy, who was still tied to the chair and seized him by the neck. Before anyone could react, she hurled both herself and the chair into the churning sea.

It happened so fast that no one had time to stop it.

“No! I already lost Scarlet. I can’t lose Timothy too…” Jason’s voice echoed over the waves as he

dove in after them.

I stood frozen, unable to process what I had just seen. By the time I snapped back, the three of them were no longer visible on the surface.

“Go! Search the water!” Sean immediately instructed.

My comrades quickly jumped into the sea to help them. I stayed on the shore, stood frozen, watching my comrades comb the waves for the three of them.

Minute after minute passed, my heart sinking deeper with every second.

An hour passed and I knew the odds. A madwoman, a child who was tied and couldn’t swim and a man who was severely wounded… how could they survive seas like this?

By nightfall, the professional rescue team had arrived and searched through the dark. At dawn, three bodies were finally pulled from the water

When I saw their bloated faces, unrecognizable, I went rigid. My hands trembled as I reached out to touch my son’s face, but Sean caught me and pulled me into his arms.

“Don’t look… you did everything you could.”

Yes. I had done everything I could to save them.

I had done everything, so this wasn’t my fault.

This was all because of Yuna. The reason all of this happened was because the father and son. They brought this on themselves.

But why did my heart feel like it had been torn apart?

Pain clamped down on my chest, my vision went black and I passed out.

When I opened my eyes again, I was in the infirmary. Sean sat beside me, his eyes red with exhaustion.

He told me the Gardner Family head, Gideon, had already taken the three bodies back. I stayed silent for a long time. A single tear slid down my cheek.

So be it. They were gone. Everything that had happened between us would go with them. All the love, the hate, the grudges, the debts… they were all swept away by the waves.

I only hoped that in our next lives, we would never meet again.
