Davon gritted his teeth through the sharp pain shooting up from his backside and stumbled to his feet, only to watch the car door slam shut again. No matter how hard he knocked on the window, Kayla didn’t so much as glance in his direction

Kayla turned to Ariel and snapped, Ariel, I’ve treated you with respect because I never saw you as just a driver. But don’t forget who you’re working for. If you keep ignoring me and doing things your way, I’ll have my mom replace you.”

Her words hit Ariel like a slap across the face. After all the years he had worked for the Sexton family, Kayla had never spoken to him like that. It wasn’t just harshit was humiliating

Ariel opened his mouth, wanting to defend Davon. But the sharpness in Kayla’s tone made him hesitate. After a moment of silent conflict, he started the car and drove away without another word

Outside, Davon chased after the car, smacking his hand on the glass as it picked up speed

He shouted, Kayla, you’re being ridiculous. I swear, if you keep this up, don’t expect me to forgive you so easily. Stop, Kayla! Hey, Kayla Sexton!”

But the car didn’t stop. It picked up speed and disappeared into the traffic while Davon stood there, chest heaving, looking helpless

People around him had already started whispering and pointing at him. Davon’s face was cloudy. He kicked a rock on the ground, but he missed and slammed his foot against the pavement instead. Pain shot up his leg, and he gasped, hopping in place like an idiot

From the rearview mirror, Kayla caught a glimpse of his clumsy flailing and couldn’t help but smirk

The silence inside the car stretched out until Ariel finally tried to lighten the mood. Ms. Sexton, uhWeather report says it’s gonna pour soon. Big storm coming.”

He thought, She cares about Davon so much. No way she’s gonna let him get soaked out there

But Kayla acted like she didn’t hear him at all. She simply urged, Well, you better drive faster then. Driving in heavy rain is dangerous.”

She glanced up at the darkening sky, her smile widening. She was actually curious whether Davon could make it home before the storm hit

Ariel stayed quiet after that, thinking, Worst case, I’ll go back and get the kid once I drop her off

As expected, by the time they rolled through the gates of Sexton Villa, the rain had come down in sheets

Kayla stepped out and noticed Ariel hadn’t moved. She immediately guessed what he was thinking

Ariel had been working for the Sextons for a long time. Due to Kayla’s past kindness toward Davon, Ariel had become quite friendly with Davon’s mother, Miranda Ortiz

Miranda was once a mistress. She was beautiful, curvy, softspokeneverything Ariel’s wife Diana wasn’t, and

it showed in the way Ariel looked at her

In the past, Ariel always showed extra care to Miranda and Davon

Kayla figured Ariel was just waiting for her to go inside so he could sneak back and rescue Davon. He wanted a moment to shine in front of Miranda

But Kayla wasn’t about to let that happen. She just wanted Davon to suffer

She said calmly, Ariel, it’s raining so heavily. You better not drive anymore tonight. I have Diana make some soup for you. Just go back and have some.”

Hearing that, Ariel hesitated for a second

Kayla tilted her head slightly, eyeing him with a smile. Why aren’t you getting out? Are you going out? Will my parents come back tonight? I didn’t hear that.”

Her gaze was sharp, and Ariel felt like she could see right through him. All his little plans were exposed

He forced an awkward chuckle and got out. No, nothing. Ain’t safe to go out in weather like this anyway.”

Kayla didn’t call Ariel out on his little plan. Instead, she reminded him to shut the garage door tight in case the water rose and flooded the place. Then, without another word, she walked back toward the house

The Sexton family had a separate wing for the staff, so Kayla figured when she stepped into the main living room, what greeted her would be the usual darkness and silence

But to her surprise, the lights were all on. A man in a sharp suit was sitting on the sofa, looking perfectly still. His hand rested casually on the armrest, lightly rolling the obsidian bracelet he always wore

Even from behind, Kayla recognized him instantly. It was her older brother, Tristian

That bracelet had become his signature. He was always calm, distant, and unreadablelike the obsidian beads he loved so much, which gave him a sharp and calculated vibe

Recalling what happened in her past life, Kayla sneered inwardly, What a master of pretense. Underneath all that cool wisdom, he’s just a heartless fool who can’t tell right from wrong‘

Kayla had no interest in dealing with Tristian now. She knew it wasn’t the right time to go headtohead with him

Without saying a word, she aimed to walk right past him and head upstairs. But Tristian suddenly turned around, his face as expressionless as ever

Since when did you get so rude? Not even gonna say hello before running off?said Tristian in an icy tone

His voice was as chilly as always, even more so with the quiet rattle of the obsidian beads in his hand

Kayla froze upon hearing that. Memories of her past life surged uphow she tried to protect Tristian from being manipulated by Marianna, and how that turned Marianna against her

However, Tristian fell for Marianna’s lies, growing colder and more distant toward his own sister. In the end, Kayla paid the price for his blind loyalty

Kayla’s rage bubbled beneath the surface like lava, burning hot. She could hardly hold back the urge to tear him apart for being such a clueless idiot, so naturally, she wouldn’t want to spare a glance at her socalled brother

But she had already experienced a long and draining day. All Kayla wanted now was a shower, some peace, and time to sort out her next move. She didn’t want more trouble now

She forced a stiff smile and said, Evening, Tris.”

Her tone matched Tristian’sflat and indifferent. The way she talked to him was nothing like the warm greetings she used to give him. Tristian raised his eyebrows, feeling a bit surprised

But just as Kayla moved again, trying to step on the stairs, Tristian’s expression darkened. He shot up from the sofa, clutched the beads tighter, and stepped toward her, his voice low and sharp. Who said you could leave?”

Kayla’s eyes narrowed slightly. A slow, amused smirk tugged at her lips as she lifted her brows. You need something?”

If it were the previous Kayla, she might’ve flinched. After all, Tristian had that commanding and stern air. He already worked in the family company and carried the weight of that authority. Back then, Kayla was always in awe of him

But now? She stared him right in the eye, completely unshaken

To Tristian, that look felt like a slap in the face, like she was challenging him. His anger flared almost instantly

I thought maybe there was some misunderstanding, but seeing how you’re acting now? Guess not. Kayla, I heard what you did at schoolpicking fights, bullying other students. You think this is how our family raised you to behave?Tristian said, his voice rising

Before she could respond, his palm slammed down hard on the dining table. The force sent the water in a nearby glass flying, ripples spreading across the table. A few droplets splashed onto his shirt, leaving faint, scattered stains

Kayla thought bitterly to herself, I see. Marianna didn’t argue with me at school today because she ran straight to Tristian to complain.’
