It wasn’t until Kayla yanked open the car door and slid into the backseat that the loud slam finally snapped Ariel out of his daze.
He wiped the drool from his mouth and asked cautiously, “Miss, what took you so long today?”
Kayla leaned against the rear window, her eyes fixed on the clinic door a short distance away.
She saw Payton run out of the clinic. His figure was still upright, but there was a flicker of something in his posture. A quiet, almost invisible sadness.
Kayla had said some pretty cruel things back there, and now, a pang of regret hit her.
Kayla thought, I just didn’t want him getting caught up in my mess again. But still, he was only trying to help. I didn’t have to be that harsh.
What if I really hurt his pride? What if this mess gives him some kind of complex? Wouldn’t that mean I dragged him down all over again?‘
Noticing Kayla had gone completely silent, staring blankly ahead, Ariel called out once more, “Miss?”
Kayla blinked and turned away from the window. She replied in a flat tone, “Nothing. Just stayed a little longer.”
She clearly didn’t want to explain, and her whole energy seemed drained.
Ariel could sense something was off. Kayla had been acting differently these past couple of days, like a whole new person. The soft–spoken girl he used to know was nowhere to be found.
Just as Ariel was about to start the car and drive home, Kayla suddenly spoke up, “Ariel, don’t go home yet. Take me to Maple Avenue.”
Ariel asked in surprise, “Miss, what are you doing there at this hour?”
Kayla’s voice dropped into a cold sneer. “Did you ask my dad questions like that when you were driving for him?”
She thought, ‘Or have I been too easy on him lately, and now he’s forgetting his place?‘
Ariel narrowed his eyes slightly. Kayla’s attitude clearly rubbed him the wrong way.
He replied, “Miss, I’m just looking out for you. You’re still young. Wandering around this late is not safe. If Mr. Sexton hears about it, he’s gonna be pissed.”
“That’s my business, not yours,” Kayla snapped. “Just do as I say.”
But Ariel acted like he hadn’t heard a thing. He insisted, “I can’t do that. Since I’m in charge of driving you, I gotta make sure you’re safe. It’s late. We’d better just go home right now.”
The truth was, he couldn’t care less about her safety–he had his own plans for the night and didn’t want to be dragged all over town by a teenage girl.
Kayla’s brows furrowed hard as she snapped, “Ariel, are you deaf or just ignoring me? I said take me to Maple Avenue.”
Ariel scoffed internally, “This little brat thinks she can boss me around just ‘cause she’s got the Sexton name? Please. Everyone knows Jackson runs the family, and maybe Tristian.

“This girl? She ain’t even in the picture when it comes to inheritance. What power does she think she has?‘
He snorted inwardly, ‘She used to be so obsessed with Davon, and she was polite to me. But lately, she’s completely different, even throwing Jackson’s name around to pressure me.
Well, let’s see if she still acts all high and mighty when I put her in her place.
With that, he ignored Kayla completely and turned the car around toward Sexton Villa.
Kayla immediately noticed something was wrong and asked, “Ariel, what are you doing?”
She reached for the door handle, but before she could even try to open it, Ariel hit the lock button.
