Jackson, on the other hand, clearly caught off guard. He didn’t hug Kayla back. After a second, he pushed her away and said, “Come on, don’t act like a little girl.
Kayla had never been the type to act clingy around Jackson, and the moment he pushed her away, she took the chance to step back, clearly uncomfortable with the display.
Off to the side, Tristian fiddled with a brand–new obsidian bracelet, his voice full of sarcasm. “Well, look who finally decided to show up. Kayla, you still remember where home is?”
At the sound of his voice, Kayla flinched like she’d been struck. Her body trembled slightly, and her eyes turned red as she looked up, choking on her words. “Tris, I’m sorry. I know I messed up.”
Her voice cracked as tears welled up again. She moved closer to Jackson instinctively, like a frightened child seeking shelter, as if Tristian were something dangerous.
Tristian hadn’t expected Kayla to submit so quickly. Last night, she’d acted like a lunatic, holding scissors to his head and shaving off his hair without blinking.
Tristian thought that Kayla must be scared because Jackson was around.
“Crying is not gonna fix what you did. You think a few tears can cover up the fact that you were out all night? Let’s hear you explain that one to Dad,” Tristian snapped.
His tone held no concern–just smug satisfaction, like he’d finally caught her red–handed.
Kayla’s eyes filled with more tears as she looked up at Jackson, her voice trembling with hurt. “Dad, I wasn’t. I didn’t sneak off to fool around. I just… I—”
But the words wouldn’t come. She hesitated, lips parted, as if searching for something to say, something that wouldn’t make things worse.
Tristian scoffed, “Just what? Can’t think of anything, can you? Guilt got your tongue, huh?”
Kayla pressed her lips together, lowering her gaze. She looked genuinely torn, as if she were hiding something she couldn’t
say.
Jackson’s patience was wearing thin. He rubbed his temples, then barked, “Enough. I’ve had a long day. I don’t want to come home to this noise. What happened? Speak clearly and don’t waste my time.”
Kayla cast a timid glance toward Tristian, her eyes wide and filled with fear.
The more hesitant she looked, the more aggressive Tristian became.
“You better fess up now. Once Dad finds out the truth on his own, you’re screwed,” Tristian said, voice low and threatening.
Kayla’s body trembled harder. Suddenly, she burst into sobs. “Tris, I’m sorry. I swear I won’t say anything in front of Dad. Just don’t force me please.”
Jackson’s expression changed in an instant. He turned to Tristian, a look of confusion and suspicion crossing his face.
The way Kayla explained was too meaningful. It sounded like a warning, like she was covering for something. It forced Jackson to wonder what exactly Tristian had done to Kayla.
Tristian felt the suspicion in his father’s gaze immediately. The smugness drained from his face, replaced by alarm.

He roared, “What the hell are you talking about? Stop making stuff up.”

But the louder he got, the more Kayla recoiled. She jumped behind Jackson like he was her last line of defense, clutching his sleeve tightly as she cried out, “Dad, help me. Tris is gonna kill me.”
The room went dead silent.
Tristian’s jaw clenched, his face flushed with rage and disbelief. He stormed forward and pointed at Kayla’s face, warning, You better shut your mouth, Kayla. Don’t go spouting lies like that.”
The beads of the bracelet patted against her cheek as he shouted, and Kayla instinctively stepped back, gripping Jackson’s arm tightly. Her body shook with fear.
Jackson’s brows furrowed, and he clenched his jaw. He slammed his palm down on the table with a loud bang that echoed through the room.
He growled, “That’s enough. Somebody better start talking. Don’t test my patience.”
