When she knocked on the door, Marianna put on an innocent expression. She greeted the doctor politely before saying, “Doctor, my friend is really shy. She was too embarrassed to talk to you. Is she okay?”
The doctor eyed Marianna suspiciously. “Excuse me, you are?”

Marianna’s smile grew sweeter. “Oh, I’m her friend. I was worried something might happen to her, so I came with her here. I just went to the restroom just now.”
“I see.” The doctor nodded, then spoke earnestly, “Since you’re her friend, you should talk some sense into her. Tell her to come back for a proper check–up. Pregnancy is a serious matter. She can’t put this off.”
Marianna’s pupils contracted sharply. She thought, ‘Pregnant? Kayla actually did something so shameless! She struts around like she’s some high–and–mighty lady, but she actually got herself pregnant!‘
A calculating glint flickered in her eyes. She murmured inwardly, ‘Kayla, don’t blame me. If you hadn’t humiliated and bullied me before, I wouldn’t have to do this.
You only have yourself to blame for being so reckless. You got yourself pregnant, and even handed me such massive leverage on a silver platter. I’d be an idiot to pass up a chance like this to spread the word.‘
Noticing Marianna had zone out, the doctor called softly, “Young lady? Are you all right?”
Marianna snapped back to her senses, hiding the calculation in her eyes. She feigned shock and said, “I… I’m fine. I’m just so stunned. How could Kayla get pregnant?”
The doctor hesitated, then added, “I haven’t examined her yet, so I can’t be sure she is pregnant. You girls are all so shy- make sure you keep this between you, all right?”
Marianna nodded, a strange smile flitting across her face.
She said, “Don’t worry, doctor, I’ll keep it secret. It’s all my fault, really. I told Kayla not to hang out with those thugs, but she wouldn’t listen and even checked into hotels with them. Now, she’s pregnant. What is she going to do?”
While she talked, Marianna raised a hand to brush away the tears that weren’t even there from the corner of her eye. Watching the doctor’s brows furrow deeper, she felt a triumphant smirk tug at her lips.
By the time Marianna left, the doctor suddenly thought of something.
She talked to herself, “What did that girl say her classmate’s name was? Kayla? I thought the patient was Amara… Oh no, that’s the wrong patient.”
Kayla had no idea what happened next in the Gynecology & Obstetrics Department. She took a long detour to avoid any unnecessary trouble before finally making her way to the ward where Payton’s mother lay.
Leaning against the wall, she panted heavily, her face a mix of embarrassment and relief, as if she’d just narrowly escaped a disaster.
Once she’d calmed down, Kayla’s gaze drifted to the ward through the thin glass window on the door.
On the hospital bed lay a woman with a serene expression. Her features bore a faint resemblance to Payton’s, lending her face an air of quiet peace.

Looking at her, Kayla felt a vague sense of familiarity, as if she’d seen the woman somewhere before, but she couldn’t recall where, no matter how hard she tried.
Payton stood beside the bed. With one hand, he gently supported his mother’s head. In the other, he held a damp towel, which he used to wipe her checks slowly and carefully.
Every movement overflowed with deep love and tenderness for her.
He set the towel down softly, picked up a dry cloth, and continued to dab the water droplets from his mother’s hands.
After that, he carefully pulled the quilt around her, tucking in every corner to keep it secure. He looked as though he was terrified that even the faintest breeze might hurt her delicate frame.
When he’d finished, Payton sat down by the bedside. His tired eyes fixed on the woman in the bed, and he whispered softly, “Mom, don’t leave me. You have to wake up. Just talk to me. What do I do now?”
His words drifted through the crack in the door, carrying endless sorrow and helplessness.
