Chapter 80

“I knew you had feelings for me, but I never imagined you could be this shameless. To get me, you’d actually sleep with another man, get yourself pregnant, and then try to pin it on me? How low can you sink…”
The words died on Davon’s tongue when a blur of movement crossed his vision. A sharp crack rang out, echoing in the corridor, and for a second, the entire world seemed to go silent.
Every student around them sucked in a sharp breath, eyes widening in disbelief.
Davon’s cheek burned as he clutched at his face, glaring at Kayla in outrage. “You actually hit me…”
Another slap cut him off, swift and merciless.
“You’ve lost your mind!” His face was already swollen, his eyes bloodshot with fury, his expression twisted with rage.
Kayla flexed her stinging fingers and let out a cold laugh. “No, Davon. You’re the one who’s lost it. Who do you think you are, spitting filth at me like that?”
She had swallowed her anger earlier when Ravenna humiliated her. She couldn’t lash out at a teacher, not in public.
But Davon? Once, she might have cared for him, tolerated him, even spoiled him. That time was over. Now he was nothing more than trash, unworthy even to shine her shoes, and yet he dared to humiliate her.
He needed a lesson, and she was going to deliver it.
Davon’s face contorted like a cat with its tail stepped on. “What am I? You’re the one who got knocked up and tried to dump it on me. So tell me, what does that make you?”
Straightening his back, he raised his voice, swollen face flushed with false righteousness. “Don’t play dumb, Kayla. The whole school is saying that baby is mine. I’m the one they’re all pointing at.
“And what, I’m not supposed to know when I supposedly slept with you? Shouldn’t you be the one explaining?”
Earlier, he might have been willing to keep quiet. If she had begged, pleaded, and even offered him money, he would have considered it. But Kayla had refused to bow her head, so now he’d drag her through the mud.
A mocking smile touched Kayla’s lips as she stepped closer, her voice dripping with disdain. “Then go ask the people spreading it. What does it have to do with me?”
She had already gone to the police. Whoever had smeared her name would pay the price.
Davon wiped angrily at the spit on his face and blocked her path once more. “No. You’re not walking away until you clear this up.
Kayla’s patience snapped. She drove her foot up toward his groin, fast and ruthless.
But Davon, already wary after the slaps, stumbled back just in time, the kick grazing past.
He glanced down at the dusty footprint streaked across his trousers and felt a chill of relief.
One second slower, and the consequences would have been unbearable. His face darkened further at the thought.
Even so, he instinctively put more distance between them, his voice cold and biting. “You think it’s that easy? If it weren’t for you, would I be humiliated like this? You’re going to explain yourself right here, in front of everyone. Tell us whose child it is, or you’re not leaving.”

He was determined to expose her, to prove she couldn’t possibly have found a better man behind his back.
Hailey slipped into the circle, her expression full of feigned concern as she turned to Kayla. “Come on, Kayla. If you want to fool around, that’s on you. But don’t drag Davon into it. Everyone’s already saying the baby is his. Do you know how damaging that is for him?”
Her words carried a sharp edge of jealousy, and the way she looked at Davon left little doubt about the possessiveness simmering underneath.
In her mind, Davon was already hers, and she would never allow anyone to tarnish him.
Kayla’s lashes lowered just enough to shadow the disgust in her eyes.
When she looked at Davon, it was with cold contempt, as if he were nothing more than a sideshow act.
“You?” she said, her tone dripping with mockery. “Be the father of my child? Keep dreaming.”
Even if she were pregnant, Davon would be the last man she’d ever claim.
Marianna seized on the moment, her eyes sparking as though she had caught Kayla in a confession. “So you’re admitting it now? You really are pregnant?” she pressed eagerly.
Kayla’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. “When did you hear me say that? If you’re hearing things, see a doctor. Don’t bark at me like a stray mutt.”
Hailey jumped back in before Marianna could respond, her voice smug with triumph. “Deny it all you want. We all heard you. There’s no point in trying to talk your way out of it.”
Davon took a step forward, planting himself squarely in front of Kayla. His voice rang with righteous indignation, every syllable meant for the crowd as much as for her.
He said, “Kayla, you’ve always chased after me, clinging to me, showering me with attention. But I’ve stayed focused on my studies. I’ve only ever seen you as a childhood friend, never more than that, and certainly never intimate.
“You should tell everyone who the real father is, before this damages me any further.”
That was all it took for the crowd to ignite.
Students began whispering fiercely among themselves, the air thick with curiosity and disbelief.
Some gawked, as though they had just heard the juiciest gossip of the year. Others traded knowing looks, eyes darting between Kayla and Davon, hungry for proof in their expressions.
“No way. You mean Kayla and Davon were never together?” one boy muttered, astonished. “She used to follow him everywhere, like his shadow. She gave him all those gifts, and he accepted them. I thought they were already dating.”
“Childhood friend? Please,” another girl scoffed. “He just never liked her. She was the one chasing him, and in the end, she’s left with nothing. Classic.”
“So if the baby isn’t his, then whose is it?” someone else asked, their voice rising with excitement.
“Who knows,” a girl said with a conspiratorial smile. “I’ve heard Kayla’s private life is messy. Maybe she hooked up with some random guy and now she’s trying to pin it on Davon.”
“No wonder the school is buzzing,” another student chimed in. “What if she planned the whole thing herself? Maybe she wants to trap Davon into playing daddy, force him to take responsibility.”
