Elijah frowned, reluctant but still walking to his father’s side. He lowered his voice and muttered, “Dad, you need to take this money. This isn’t the time to let pride get in the way.

As if something had occurred to him, Elijah shifted his tone and added, “But you’d better not let her buying you off shake your judgment.

Max’s brow twitched with irritation. He raised his hand and smacked the back of Elijah’s head, the strike carrying more frustration than real force. “What are you even talking about, you brat?”

After that, he shot Kayla an awkward glance, saying, “Kay, this boy’s name is Elijah, but you can just call him Eli.
“I haven’t been strict enough with him these years, so he tends to talk without thinking and act on impulse. Don’t hold it against him.”
Even in Max’s scolding, Kayla could hear the protective note in his voice.
She gave a soft smile, shaking her head. “Don’t worry, I don’t mind. Honestly, I think he’s… pretty straightforward. It’s kind of nice.”

His mood soured in an instant. He turned his head and glared at Kayla.
With a sharp scoff, Elijah snapped, “Let me remind you, your mother still hasn’t cleared her name. You’d better hope she really had nothing to do with what happened back then, or I won’t let you off.
“And another thing. Calling my dad your uncle doesn’t change anything. I don’t recognize you as my cousin.”

Before Kayla could say anything. Max smacked the back of Elijah’s head again, this time harder than before.
Max grumbled, “Stop it. Kayla’s two days older than you, you know? So, she’s not your little cousin. If anything, she should be your older cousin.”
Elijah’s mouth twitched, and his expression froze in disbelief. “Cousin? My older cousin? How is that possible?” His voice carried shock mixed with frustration.
Not long ago, Kayla had spoken to him with a kind of politeness that gave him face, and now suddenly she was his older cousin–all because of two days‘ difference.
He shook his head, unable to accept it. He thought, ‘No way. That can’t be right.’
Kayla arched a brow, her smile full of meaning as she nodded. “Oh, so Eli is my younger cousin.” Her playful tone made it clear how much the revelation amused her.
Max nodded, his expression turning serious. He said, “In my condition, I can’t do much to help. But Eli is still young. He might not be ready for big responsibilities, but he’s more than capable of running errands and handling smaller tasks.
“If you ever need something, let him help you. He might not take life seriously, but when it comes to getting things done, he’s dependable. If possible, I’d like him to learn a few things along the way.”
