Davon patted her shoulder gently. “Relax, she’s not gonna do anything. She screwed up on her own, so why 

would she blame you? 

All you did was tell her Kayla went to the OB–GYN and might be pregnant. She’s the one who didn’t bother checking if it was true before posting it all over the school forum. She caused that whole mess herself, so how could she blame you?” 

What really pissed Davon off was that Hailey didn’t just spread rumors about Kayla. She dragged him into it too, and made him look like a complete idiot in front of everyone. 

Davon hadn’t even gone after Hailey for what she’d done. Marianna had some nerve coming after her like this. 

Besides, Davon knew perfectly well that Hailey had feelings for him. As long as he protected Maria, Hailey wouldn’t dare touch her. She’d back off out of respect for him. 

Marianna pressed her lips together, guilt flashing in her eyes. Honestly, his reassurance just made things worse. She felt even more anxious now. 

Because Maria was the only one who knew the truth. She’d grabbed Hailey’s phone and posted all those rumors herself. 

Like I’d ever tell him that,‘ Marianna thought. ‘No way I’m ruining the sweet, innocent image I’ve worked so hard to build.‘ 

“But what if she’s still mad and decides to come after us? What if she sends the Mitchell family’s bodyguards to beat us up? You saw how crazy she was that day. I still get freaked out just thinking about it,” Maria said. 

She buried her face in Davon’s chest, looking genuinely terrified. 

Maria had seen the whole show at school today from a distance. Hailey had walked in with a pack of bodyguards in black suits following her around. 

If Hailey just pointed at Maria and told one of those guys to deal with her, Maria knew she’d be done for. She wouldn’t stand a chance. 

Marianna’s soft body pressed against him, and Davon froze for a second. He swallowed hard, then wrapped his arm around her waist, gently rubbing her back in soothing circles. 

“Don’t be scared. Security’s really good these days. There are cameras everywhere,” Davon said firmly. “Even with all their money and power, the Mitchells wouldn’t risk doing anything with all that surveillance watching. 

“Hailey’s already been expelled, so if her family causes more trouble, they’ll have a hard time explaining it to the cops. And I’m here. If Hailey really loses it and sends people after you, I don’t care what happens to me, I’ll protect you no matter what.” 

Marianna looked up at him, and his words actually made her feel better. She blinked up at him with shining eyes, gazing at him like he was her hero.

“Davem, why are you so good to me?” Maria whispered sweetly. 

Marianna’s hot breath fanned across his face, making Davon swallow hard. Her worshipful gaze and that soft voice sem his heart racing, his breath coming faster. 

Davon’s hand tightened around Marianna’s waist, his thumb slowly tracing along her soft side. With his other hand, he gently tucked a stray lock behind her ear, then lifted her chin with his finger. 

“Well, it’s because I like you. What else?” Davon said, his voice dropping low. 

Marianna’s cheeks flushed pink as she bit her lip shyly. She gave his chest a light, playful tap–barely more than a brush of her fingers. “Stop it! You know I’ve always thought of you as my big brother. You can’t say stuff like that, she protested softly. 

Her touch lingered on his chest, not pushing him away at all. If anything, it felt more like an invitation. 

Davon caught her hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze. Then suddenly, he pulled Marianna fully into his arms. Their bodies pressed so close together that they could feel each other’s breath.
