‘No wonder Marianna’s been taking days off lately. I kept wondering what she was up to. Turns out someone beat her up,‘ Kayla thought, raising an eyebrow. Hailey already made a move that quickly?‘Â
“Are they dead?” Kayla asked. Honestly, she only cared about the result.Â
Tania was left speechless. How am I supposed to respond to that?‘ she thought.Â
“No, they’re not dead, just really messed up. Davon broke his leg, and Marianna’s hand is busted. The injuries are pretty serious. Word is, they’re stuck in the hospital for a while,” Tania replied.Â
Kayla gave a resigned sigh. “That’s too bad,” she said, not sounding the least bit sorry.Â
Tania just nodded. Just imagining Maria and Davon getting jumped and beaten while stuffed into sacks made her shrink back in fear. ‘That must’ve been brutal,‘ she thought.Â
“Yeah. I heard someone smashed Marianna’s hand with a brick. It got crushed so badly that even when it heals, she’ll never be able to play piano again,” Tania said.Â
“What a shame.” Kayla turned to Tania with a bright smile, but her voice was low as she corrected her. “What I meant was… it’s a shame they didn’t die.”Â
In her previous life, Marianna and Davon had ruined Kayla’s SAT and scarred her face at the peak of her career. They’d even had Dustin play with her feelings, pushing her into total despair.Â
Now, they just got beaten up and suffered a few injuries. That was nothing compared to what they’d done toÂ
her.Â
Kayla had thought that with Hailey’s impulsive temper, Davon and Marianna would either be dead or at least half–dead. This was not what she expected.Â
Tania’s mouth twitched. Kayla was all smiles, but her eyes were pure ice. When Kayla spoke, her words sent a shiver straight down Tania’s spine.Â
But as soon as Kayla looked away, that uneasy feeling vanished, like it had never even happened.Â
Tania shook herself, trying to toss out all those weird thoughts. Then, as if something just popped into her, head, she leaned in and whispered quietly.Â
“Kay, do you think Hailey could’ve been behind this?” Tania asked. The timing of Davon and Marianna getting beaten up was just a little too convenient.Â
Hailey had only gotten out a few days ago, and right after that, Davon and Marianna got attacked.Â
TanÃa suddenly remembered what Kayla had said to Hailey that day. ‘An alley. Getting stuffed into a sack. A broken hand, she thought.Â
Everything lined up perfectly with what happened to Davon and Marianna. Tania couldn’t help thinking Hailey was behind it.Â

Chapter 150Â
Kayla kepe writing down vocabulary words her expression totally calm How would I know? I didn’t see anything With all the cameras around the cops can just check the footage and see who didÂ
This slapped her thigh, somewhere between frustrated and excited. “That’s the thing. All the cameras at the scene got smashed. There’s no footage of who did it.”Â
That just made Tania even more suspicious. No one else could take out all those cameras and hold a grudge against both Davon and Marianna. She really couldn’t think of anyone besides HaileyÂ
Too bad there was no proof. h was like watching a mystery show where everything pointed to the killer, but without evidence, it was enough to drive everyone crazy.Â
A small smile tugged at Kayla’s lips Guess Hailey isn’t totally dumb after all. She remembered every detail I mentioned and pulled it off perfectly, Kayla thought. At least my effort wasn’t wasted.Â
Just then, her phone buzzed. Kayla unlocked it and saw photos and videos pop up on her screen. Her eyes widened in surprise for a second, then she smiled.Â
Well, this is an unexpected bonus, Kayla thought, a thrill running through her. Maybe it’s not so bad that Davon and Marianna survived after all.Â
When they get back. I’ll give them a surprise they’ll never forget. I can’t wait, Kayla mused. Something dark flickered in Kayla’s eyes when she thought about it, and a slow smile spread across her face.Â
Tania watched Kayla’s expression change and felt a chill run down her spine. She had this sinking feeling that someone’s luck was about to run out.Â
That evening, after her boxing workout. Kayla was listening to podcast on her way home, feeling pretty good. She was planning to study some more when someone suddenly jumped out right at her doorstep and blocked her path.Â
“Kay they shouted.Â
Kayla jumped and nearly kicked out on reflex. She barely managed to stop herself in time.Â
When Kayla saw who it was, she looked surprised, but not in a good way. “Miranda, what are you doing out here this late? You scared the crap out of me!”Â
Jumping out at people like that could give someone a heart attack, Kayla thought irritablyÂ
Miranda Ortiz–Davon’s mom–narrowed her eyes at Kayla’s tone. Her face darkened with obvious displeasureÂ
“Kay, why did you get home so late? I waited out here forever. My hands are frozen now!” Miranda complained.Â
Miranda’s voice was soft and gentle, but Kayla could hear the reproach underneath.Â
Kayla raised an eyebrow. ‘So her hands are frozen? Like that’s my problem,‘ she thought coldly.Â

In hes be life, Miranda had always wred vaperien fout because the knee Kayla wa mto Davon shetÂ
enth cofficted everything Kayla did, scting like we wise elfer who had the right ro terore her aboutÂ
en linke thingÂ
Mirands always found something wrong. Even when Kayla laughed too loud, she’d call her uncouth and say she had in manners Like patting Kayla down was the only way she could feel high and mightyÂ
Back then, Kayla had been so stupidly obsessed with Davon that she’d put up with all of Miranda’s passive: aggressive comments and constant nitpicking.Â
But now, Kayla didn’t give a damn about Davon anymore. What makes Miranda think she could lecture me? she thoughtÂ
“Miranda, when I come home is none of your business. Seriously, why are you all up in my life?” Kayla shot hack coollyÂ
Kayla hadn’t asked Miranda to wait outside. If she wanted to freeze out here, that was her problem. Gosh, she has way too much time on her hands, Kayla thought, rolling her eyes.Â
Kayla had never spoken to Miranda like this before–so blunt and cold, without any respect–and Miranda just stood there, stunned.Â
Miranda’s eyebrows drew together as she finally processed what Kayla had said. She’d already been annoyed that Kayla wouldn’t let Davon ride with her to school, which had made him sick.Â
Now that Kayla was actually talking back, Miranda liked her even less. Her voice turned icy.Â
“Kay, is that any way to talk to me? I’m trying to help you! What kind of girl comes home this late? If people find out, they’ll say you have no manners. No respectable family will want you as their son’s wife,” Miranda scoffed, her tone dripping with superiority.Â
Rules again? That’s all she ever talks about, Kayla thought. If Miranda’s so into rules, why was she the one sleeping with Davon’s married dad and having his illegitimate kid? She’s the last person who should be preaching at me!Â
“Rules” Kayla repeated with a sneer. Her eyes were hard as ice as she stared Miranda down, not blinking once.Â
