Chapter 36 I’m LeavingÂ
“Tomorrow, I’ll have Sam go to the police station. This matter ends here….Â
“It’s okay. I’ll handle Nova…Â
Every word felt like a sharp blade, stabbing straight into her heart.Â
The image of him holding Sloane, whispering tender comforts, flashed again in her mind, searing her eyes.Â
to all his protectiveness and indulgence toward her earlier had been an act. He’d only put on that show to stop her from confronting Sloane later…Â
Jova laughed bitterly.Â
he remembered Kael had always been decisive, but now–for Sloane–he was being so careful, so thorough.Â
le doted on Sloane so much, and he treated Nova like a fool, toying with her.Â
ears blurred Nova’s vision.Â
he bit her inner lip until it bled, her legs stiff as she walked down the stairs. She wandered in a daze, like a lost child, with no idea where she was going…Â
he let out another bitter laugh; the little dimples on her cheeks–once as sweet as honey–were now filled with tears. “Kael, I’m leaving soon, and you still have > be this cruel to me?”Â
he tilted her head up at the ceiling, forcing herself not to cry.Â
ight now, Kael was probably still comforting Sloane, the two of them wrapped up in each other’s sweetness… Unlike her–used up and tossed aside, forgotten 1 her empty ward.Â
le had Sloane, and that was enough.Â
ova managed a smile uglier than a frown.Â
hrough her tear–clouded eyes, she suddenly saw Kael as a teenager, running toward her with a grin, his eyes overflowing with love he couldn’t hide. “Wait for le after school–we’ll go home together.”Â
he pressed a hand hard against her chest, where it felt like someone had carved a gaping hole, the pain unbearable.Â
Meanwhile, in Sloane’s ward, Kael had no idea Nova had been there.Â
le rolled up the sleeve of his tailored shirt, checked his watch, and frowned–he’d been gone for half an hour.Â
le gently pushed away the woman clinging to him, his tone cool. “That’s enough. Rest now–I’m leaving.”Â
s he going back to Nova? Sloane’s bright eyes dimmed with disappointment.Â
Inwilling to let go, she looped her slender arms around his neck and tilted her head to kiss his firm jaw.Â
Kael, I’m scared alone. Will you stay with me?” Her soft voice was laced with grievance, and her cat like, clingy gestures made Kael pause as he tried to pullÂ
away.Â
He looked down at the docile woman in his arms–her eyes and nose pink, her beautiful eyes glistening with tears, like a wronged kitten begging for pity.Â
Once, Kael would have softened instantly and stayed.Â

But now, seeing her tearful face, all he could think of was Nova.Â
Nova was afraid of the dark, she hated being alone at night. Back when he traveled for work, he’d always stay until she fell asleep before he could relaxÂ
Now she was alone in her ward–how miserable must she be?Â
A sudden ache twisted in his chest, warm and sore.Â
Sloane sensed his hesitation he wasn’t kissing her back like he used to, not even saying a single comforting word.Â
Her heart tightened, then pulled away, biting her lip, and said softly, “Kael, go back to Nova. I heard she was harassed by thugs tonight–she must be terrified alone in her ward.”Â
She forced a bitter smile. “I’m tough; this little injury doesn’t hurt. And I’m used to being alone anyway–go on.”Â
Her voice was thick with unspoken grievance.Â
Kael took her wrist, his handsome brows furrowing almost imperceptibly.Â
Sloane watched his expression from the corner of her eye, secretly delighted, and added, “Lucky for her, someone passed by and saved her–even brought her to he hospital and took care of her. There really are good people in the world, aren’t there?”Â
As she spoke, Kael’s face darkened, his expression unreadable.Â
‘Ah…” Sloane’s delicate nose wrinkled–his grip on her wrist was tightening, making it hurt–but her heart was filled with joy.Â
she blinked back tears, pretending confusion. “Kael, what’s wrong? You’re hurting me… Let go a little…”Â
Kael snapped back to his senses before his deep gaze locked onto her, and he suddenly loosened his hold.Â
loane’s heart leaped. So what if Nova’s been with Kael for nine years? He’s totally tired of her by now, isn’t he?Â
But the next second, he grabbed her jaw, forcing her to look up–and she crashed into his sharp, icy stare, a shiver running through her.Â
he froze for a second, then tried to push his hand away. “Kael… you’re hurting me…”Â
Didn’t I tell you not to meddle in anything related to her?”Â
Cael’s rough thumb brushed her cheek gently, as if caressing a lover–but his tone was cold enough to make her blood run cold.Â
If you do it again-” He grazed her lips, leaving the threat hanging, but the chill in his voice was terrifying.Â
to him, mistresses were just for fun. Sloane was obedient, had a nice body and face, and when he was in a good mood, he’d give her a little sweetness. But once he crossed the line–especially when it came to Nova–she’d hit his bottom line.Â
loane’s face turned pale inch by inch, panic flooding her.Â
the hadn’t expected this reaction–he wasn’t staying, and he was even angry,Â
n the months she’d been with him, she’d never been treated like this.Â
Nova’s already tangled up with Corin, and he still favors her?Â
She’d seriously underestimated how much Nova meant to him….Â
Sloane ground her teeth in jealousy,Â
She took a deep breath, then held his large hands in hers, her eyelashes fluttering. “Kael, I know I was wrong. Don’t be angry… I’ll listen to you from now on.”Â
Kael’s gaze swept over her swollen cheek, and he finally let go, instead patting her soft hair.Â
“Sloane, I thought you were the obedient one…” His voice was gentle, but Sloane heard the warning loud and clear: stay in your place, and don’t covet what’s notÂ
yours.Â
