Chapter 57 Another Twist–The Contract Investigation He Hid From NovaÂ
Kael my hand hurts…”Â
Nova’s face had drained of color as she spoke, her heart racing unnaturally fast.Â
Kael frore mid step. He shot a confused glance at the document lying just inches away–then turned to Nova instead. He’d check the papers later, he told himselfÂ
What’s wrong? Let me see.”Â
His brows furrowed with concern as he took her hand to examine it.Â
“It just twitched… must’ve gotten cold.” Nova let out a quiet sigh of relief.Â
“Always so careless with the cold.”Â
Though his tone held a hint of chiding, Kael wrapped her hand in both of his to warm it, adding softly. “No more cold water for you from now on, okay?”Â
Nova nodded numbly, staring at his worried expression in a daze. A thought flickered through her mind… What if Kael had seen that document? What if he’d found out she was leaving him–forever?Â
Knowing his temper, she thought he’d probably lose his mind, do something reckless, something desperate.Â
But there was no “what if.”Â
She’d never let him find out.Â
He’d lied to her for nine years. It was time he paid for it.Â
A bitter smile tugged at Nova’s lips. She dropped her gaze, a flicker of resolve hardening in her eyes–even as her heart ached relentlessly.Â
Just then, Alison walked into the dining room. Her eyes landed on the document on the side table, and she froze. She’d been going over the contract with her lawyer last night and had forgotten to put it away. Panicked, she signaled to a servant, mouthing for him to sneak it away later.Â
Thank God Kael hadn’t seen it. If he had, all her careful planning would’ve fallen apart.Â
Nova looked up, locking eyes with Alison. Her brows knit tightly.Â
Alison, knowing she’d been caught, hurried to give the servant a quiet, urgent instruction–hoping to brush the mistake under the rug.Â
The dining table was gradually filled as each dish was served one after another.Â
Kael held Nova’s hand, his face calm–but his mind was racing. He couldn’t stop thinking about those papers. Something about them bothered him, a nagging feeling he couldn’t shake.Â
Nova had no appetite.Â
She picked at her food, her mind elsewhere.Â
Kael noticed. He poured her a glass of juice, his eyes filled with affection. “Drink this. You’ve barely eaten.”Â
Every little gesture, every small act of kindness, felt like a knife in her heart. He remembered her favorite juice, her favorite dishes, but he’d forgotten how to love her.Â
Daisy was consumed with envy–so much that the food in her mouth tasted like wax, nearly impossible to swallow.Â
The servants whispered among themselves.Â

“Mr. Voss is so good to his wife. He dotes on her so much.”Â
“He’s a changed man since he married her. He used to be so wild.”Â
“When has he ever served food to anyone? He’s so careful with her.”Â
Kael placed a piece of fish on Nova’s plate with a doting smile. “Eat more. You’ve lost weight these past few days.”Â
Nova stared at the fish, her eyes burning.Â
she’d never liked fish–she’d choked on a bone as a child, leaving her terrified. But when Kael had cooked her fish for the first time, she’d eaten it anyway, not wanting to hurt his feelings.Â
For nine years, she’d compromised, she’d hidden her true self–all for him. And he’d never noticed.Â
she gripped her fork tightly, forcing herself to stay calm.Â
Midway through the meal, Kael received a work call. He hesitated, then walked toward the floor–to–ceiling window–hoping to get a closer look at the papers. But when he got there, the table was empty.Â
He frowned, his frustration growing, then turned to a servant. “Where are the papers that were on the table?”Â
Oh, Madam had them put away. She said they looked messy. Is something wrong, Sir?”Â
Mom? She hadn’t cared about the company in years…Â
And Nova’s reaction earlier–she’d been so panicked, so desperate to distract him.Â
Cael’s face darkened. He waved the servant away, his mind racing. He pulled out his phone, calling Sam.Â
Staring out the window, his eyes were unreadable, a heavy, tense aura radiating from him.Â
After a long silence, he pulled out his phone and called Sam.Â
Look into everything Mrs. Voss has been up to these days–online and offline, no detail missed.”Â
Mrs. Voss?” Sam hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “Do you mean Ms. Hale… or Mrs. Alison Voss?”Â
Both.” His voice was sharp, leaving no room for further questions.Â
Right away, Mr. Voss.”Â
Ms. Hale, the chef’s crème brûlée is absolutely lovely–shall I get you a serving?” Daisy smiled sweetly.Â
efore Nova could decline, she’d already scooped a portion into a bowl and held it out to her.Â
lova shook her head. “No, thank you. I don’t want any.”Â
Just have a taste,” Daisy insisted, stepping closer to press the bowl into her hands. Then, accidentally, she spilled the hot custard all over herself.Â
Ah! That burns!” Daisy’s face paled instantly, her voice trembling with pain.Â
Nova’s expression stayed cold–this charade was ridiculous. She didn’t even bother to acknowledge Daisy, turning to leave right away.Â
‘Nova, hold it right there!” Alison snapped, her tone sharp with displeasure. “Daisy was kind enough to get you dessert, and even if you didn’t want it, you didn’tÂ
have to hurt her!”Â
‘Alison, it was my mistake…” Daisy sniffled, playing the victim.Â
Nova froze mid–step, her face hardening into a frigid mask.Â
“Daisy, don’t defend her!” Alison snapped. “Kael only sticks up for her because he hasn’t seen her true colors. You don’t have to be afraid–I’ll stand up for you.Â

Alison paused, then let out a mocking laugh Oh, right–your mother abandoned you long ago, didn’t she? No wonder you’re so uncouth. You’ll never fit in withÂ
our familyÂ
Novax eyes turned as cold as shards of ice. Her nails dug so deeply into her palms that they nearly drew blood. In one sharp movement, she spun around and slapped Alison hard across the face.Â
Crack!Â
The sound echoed through the dining room–so quiet that one could hear a pin drop. From across the room, Kael, who’d been on a call, froze and strode overÂ
mmediately.Â
What’s going on here?”Â
Nova’s face remained blank, not a flicker of warmth in her eyes.Â
tael’s gaze flicked to the bright red mark on Alison’s cheek, then back to Nova, his brows furrowing.Â
Alison was stunned. She couldn’t believe Nova–who’d always been meek and fawning around her–had dared to hit her. How dare she?!Â
he more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She pointed at Kael, her voice shrill. “This is the wife you chose! She bullied Daisy, and now she’s hit me! DiÂ
ou see that?!”Â
tael’s frown deepened.Â
aisy sniffled, pulling up her sleeve to reveal the bright red burn on her arm. “Kael, my injury is nothing–I’m just worried about Alison. Nova hit her… it’s so isrespectful. If word gets out, it’ll ruin the Voss family’s reputation!”Â
lison’s rage spiked at that. “You will give us an explanation for this! And Daisy–if the Sheltons find out she’s hurt, they’ll never let this go!”Â
ael massaged his temples, his expression unreadable.Â
ut Nova saw it clearly–he was hesitating.Â
e knew better than anyone how much her mother meant to her… yet he let Alison twist the knife in her heart.Â
ut why was she even surprised? Hadn’t he always done this?Â
le knew how proud she was, yet he’d stripped her of her position and let Josh walk all over her.Â
e knew she was wronged, yet he’d hired Sloane at the company and defended her, over and over.Â
le knew everything. And he still let her suffer.Â
lever had she felt so utterly alone. She’d thrown herself into this marriage, swallowing her pride to keep the peace–only to still be treated like an outsider.Â
lova fought to hold back the suffocating ache in her chest, refusing to let tears fall. She wouldn’t let them see her this vulnerable.Â
Nova.” Kael reached for her hand, his voice deep with a hint of reproach.Â
Tova’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. She swatted his hand away, her gaze cutting through Daisy, Alison, and Kael alike.Â
You want an explanation?Â
I’ll give you one.”Â
n one swift move, she grabbed the remaining ramekin of crème brûlée from the table and dumped the hot, creamy custard all over Daisy.Â
