Karl’s breath hitched. He never felt so panicked in his life. He tightened his grip on her hand.
A Aharp pain twisted Nova’s chest
the been with him for nine years–how could she not read his thoughts?
The first time he stayed out all night, he’d made her breakfast, trying to hide his guilt. He’d thought he’d gotten away with it, but she’d seen right through him.
The first time he’d come home after cheating, he’d waited on her hand and foot, as if she were a queen. But the unerasable perfume on his clothes had given
him away
Back then, he’d been traveling with his mistress while she’d waited at home–heartbroken and scared, drowning in loneliness. She’d wondered how the man
who once loved her so deeply could betray her like that.
Sometimes, she’d even begged silently. Couldn’t you just remember our past? Couldn’t you… hold onto our old feelings? Don’t leave me. We used to be so happy.
It had been so humiliating–so desperate.
Later, she’d forced herself to let go of those thoughts. She refused to be that pathetic.
Kael would never know how the girl he claimed to treasure- the one he swore he’d never hurt–had once waited for him night after night, swallowing her
ride.
Nova smiled, but her dimples were filled with sorrow. “It’s just a short drama. Fake. I was just asking… why are you so flustered?”
Kael forced a laugh, continuing to apply the ointment. “Right… short dramas aren’t real.”
Maybe the story had spooked him, but after that, Kael clung to her like a golden retriever seeking its owner’s approval.
Once, this would have made Nova overjoyed.
Now, it only exhausted her.
I need to use the restroom. Margaret should be back at the villa by now–you go on ahead. I’ll catch up.” She gently pushed him away and stood up, heading for
he door.
I’ll go with you. We’ll go together later. If Grandma sees me without you, she’ll scold me again.”
Cael took her hand, lacing their fingers together, and followed her out.
just then, a phone rang–loud and ill–timed.
Sova spoke softly, “It’s probably work. Answer it. Don’t let it keep you.”
Carl glanced at the screen, his expression sour. He frowned, hanging up and shoving the phone into his pocket before tightening his grip on her hand. “Work Soesn’t matter as much as you do.”
Nove bat her lip, too tired to argue. She let him lead her.
After leaving the restroom, Nova was digging in her bag for a tissue to wipe her hands when she looked up–and froze.
Standing in front of her was Alison.
Clearly, she’d been waiting for her on purpose.
Nova’s face turned cold. She acted as if she hadn’t seen Alison, turning to wash her hands.
Alison was surprised. She’d assumed Nova had heard her conversation with Kael earlier–assumed she’d be devastated. But Nova looked eerily calm.

Irritation bubbled up in Alison she glared at Nova’s reflection in the mirror, her voice sharp with mockery “I underestimated your patience. I didn’t think you be able to swallow your pride like this.”
Before she could finish. Nova spun around and stapped her hard across the face,
Alleon was caught off guard she raised her hand to hit back.
But Nova shoved her against the door, pinning her there. She looked down at Alison, her gaze icy. “I warned you. Next time you run your mouth, 111 hit you harder than this.”
Alison clutched her stinging cheek, her face turning as dark as thunder. “Nova!”
Nova ignored her, grabbing her bag and heading for the door.
Alison stared at her back, her teeth clenched. ‘Your arrogance only works on others! When it comes to Kael, you let him trample your dignity into the dirt!”
Nova’s steps faltered. She gripped the strap of her bag so tight her knuckles whitened. No one could see how badly her body was shaking.
Alison was right. The pride she’d clung to–she’d let the man she’d loved for nine years destroy it.
It hurt more than words could say.
Alison laughed coldly, knowing exactly where to strike. “Nova, sometimes I really pity you. You’re so stupid!”
Pity.
Sometimes, this word was the cruelest insult of all.
Nova bit her lip, then turned to face Alison, stepping closer. “I’m going to get back at Kael, and I’m just waiting for the right time.”
Alison frowned. “What are you talking about? You? You think you can ‘get back‘ at him? Did his little act of defending you go to your head? You really don’t
know your place!”
Nova’s lips curved into a faint, cold smile. “Believe it or not–when I leave, Kael will pay for what he’s done.”
Alison froze for a second, then realized what Nova meant.
The idea was absurd.
There was no way Kael would be that obsessed with her–no way he’d fall apart if she left.
Impossible!
“You’re way too full of yourself!” Alison scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain.
Nova’s lips twitched into a faint smile, “We’ll see. And when that day comes… you won’t get away unscathed either.”
Her words stung like thorns. Alison snapped, “Good riddance! When you’re gone, Kael will be free! You can’t be that naive–you must know he has someone
else.
“When you leave, hell just replace you with someone better!”
This was how you killed a person with words.
Nova forced her body to stay still, but she couldn’t stop shaking.
She tilted her head back, holding back tears, refusing to let Alison see her break.
Maybe Alison was right. When she left, Kael would forget her quickly. Someone better would take her place.
But what about these nine years? Had they meant nothing to him?
Was she the only one still holding on?

Was he really that heartless?
Nova’s chest ached. She turned and walked out of the restroom, afraid shed lose control if she stayed any longer.
Allson stood frozen in place, replaying Nova’s words in her head.
Could Kael really….
No. Impossible!
Altson frowned, shoving the thought away. Her son would be better off without Nova.
There were plenty of wealthy, well–bred women waiting for him. Nova was nothing.
Nova couldn’t find Kael outside the restroom. She was about to call him when the butler approached.
Madam, Mr. Voss went to tell the chef to make chicken and wild rice soup. He said he’ll bring it back for you later.”
Nova froze, her gaze dropping to the floor, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions.
The butler smiled, sighing in admiration. “You two have such a wonderful relationship. I’ve watched him grow up–never in a million years did I think that ›layboy would settle down. It’s amazing, really. He used to be so careless and impatient… but now he’s so thoughtful.”
Nova forced a bitter smile.
- es. She never would have guessed either.
The man who had once loved her and doted on her–who had promised to protect her–had become the one who hurt her the most.
Once, she’d thought Kael was the last man in the world who would cheat on her.
Tine years later, reality had slapped her awake.
he butler didn’t notice her turmoil, continuing, “Mr. Voss said he’ll be right back. He asked you to wait here for him.”
Tova pulled herself together, nodding softly. “Okay.”
ive minutes passed quickly.
lova grew anxious. Margaret must have already returned to the villa–why was Kael taking so long?
he decided to go downstairs to look for him.
