Chapter 64 Nova’s Resolve! Kael Panicked

After dinner with Margaret, Nova and Kael headed home.

In the car, Kael glanced at Nova every few minutes. She had her eyes closed, pretending to sleep, and he didn’t know what to say.

Guilt weighed on him–real guilt, real regret.

He knew she wasn’t asleep. She just didn’t want to talk to him–cold, distant.

But once, she’d been such a chatterbox, always having something to share with him.

Kael’s chest tightened. He took her hand, which was resting on her lap, and stroked it gently, full of affection.

“Nova, tomorrow’s our tenth anniversary.”

Nova’s eyes fluttered open, a bitter taste in her throat. She dropped her gaze. “Yeah… ten years.”

Ten years.

They’d gotten together at seventeen, married at twenty–two, and now they were twenty–six.

He’d taught her how to love, guided her in her career–he’d been her lover, her protector, almost like a father. He’d loved her, cherished her.

In their happiest moments, he’d laughed and said, “What am I gonna do with you, always clinging to me like this?”

She’d pouted, tilting her head up to look at him. “You don’t like it?”

He’d pulled her close, pressing his forehead to hers, his smile soft enough to melt her heart. “I love it. More than anything. Stick to me forever, okay? Otherwise…”

His words had been swallowed by a kiss.

But now?

Now…

Nova wracked her brain, but she couldn’t find that old spark of love anymore.

He’d nurtured it with care for ten years, then destroyed it with his own hands.

Tears stung Nova’s eyes. She turned her head to look out the window at the stream of cars and neon lights–bright, but not as painful as the man beside her.

Kael stopped the car, his eyes fixed on her peaceful profile.

He spoke softly, trying to soothe her. “Nova, Fin sorry about what happened at the manor today. I shouldn’t have left you alone. It won’t happen again, okay?”

Nova’s throat felt tight. She wanted to say–there won’t be a “next time.” Soon, you’ll be alone.

His warm, calloused hands cupped her face. His thumb brushed her cheek gently, his voice so soft it made her heart ache

Nova couldn’t escape his grip. She had to look up at him, into his gentle, deep eyes–and her heart twisted in pain.

This man was so good at charming her.

Once, no matter who was at fault, if she cried, he’d apologize immediately, doing anything to make her smile.

People had teased him, saying he’d be a total “wife guy” someday–no backbone, no pride.

Kael hadn’t cared. He’d been proud to dote on her, happy to treat her like a queen.

But Nova didn’t know when that love had shifted.

He’d crossed her boundaries, cheated on her.

He’d seen her pain, but he’d broken his promises, over and over again.

Nova’s thoughts were a mess.

Once, she’d been so spoiled that she’d pout and ask him to bandage even the smallest scrape.

Now, she’d learned to hide her tears, to hold back her pain.

She swallowed the bitterness in her throat, pushing his hands away. She mumbled, “Thanks.”

Kael’s face fell.

Last year, for their ninth anniversary, when he’d mentioned surprises, she’d clung to him, begging to know what they were.

This year, she was so cold–like she didn’t care about his plans… like she didn’t care about him.

That single “thanks” felt like a wall between them.

Panic fluttered in Kael’s chest. He reached for her hand again. “Nova…”

Nova moved her hand away, her voice flat. “The light’s green. Drive.”

Cars behind them honked. Kael had to let go and hit the gas. He glanced at her, his voice soft. “I talked to Mom. She won’t bother you anymore. I’m sorry you lad to go through that tonight, baby…”

Nova’s face darkened as she gripped the phone tighter.

Nova bit her lip so hard it bled, her eyes red. She typed back: [Prayed for that bracelet for a beast. Lucky your dog gets to wear it.]

Sloane mocked her: [You’re just jealous. Poor you–you begged Kael for a dog, and he said no. I just mentioned liking them yesterday, and he bought me one today!]

It was the truth. Even though Nova hated to admit it, her heart shattered.

Something in her snapped. She looked up at Kael, her eyes red. “Would you buy me anything I wanted?”

Kael’s face lit up. He held the steering wheel with one hand, glancing at her with a smile. “Of course.”

In that moment, it seemed like he’d move heaven and earth to get her even the stars.

Nova bit her lip, her voice trembling. “I want a golden retriever. Will you buy me one?”

Kael’s smile vanished, and his face stiffened.

“Why do you suddenly want a dog? We agreed–no pets.”

His tone was pleading, like he was trying to reason with her.

Nova’s eyes glistened with tears. She stared at his profile, stubborn for the first time in a long while. “I just do. You said you’d buy me anything I wanted.”

Kael pressed his tongue to his cheek. He parked the car in the driveway, then turned to face her, his eyes locking with her red ones.

After a long silence, he sighed, his thumb brushing the corner of her eye, his voice gentle. “Baby, dogs are a lot of work. They’re messy, they chew things up. What if they make you sick? I’d be the one hurting.
