Chapter 70 TwistCold Goodbye!

Nova!”

Kael’s eyes turned red. He shoved Sloane away and sprinted to Nova, who lay unconscious on the floor.

Sloane stumbled and fell, twisting her ankle. Tears sprang to her eyes. Ahit hurts!”

She watched as Kael lifted Nova gently into his arms, his voice desperate. Someone call an ambulance! Now!”

He was unravelingthe calm, incontrol man she’d always known was gone. He held Nova tight and ran toward the exit.

Baby, wake up. Don’t sleep. I’ll get you to a doctoryou’ll be okay,he whispered, his voice shaking.

Sloane bit her lip to hold back tears.

Will I ever make him lose control like that?

No.

But she wouldn’t give up.

She wiped her eyes, pushed herself up, and limped away, ignoring the pain in her ankle.

Beep, beep, beep…

The sound of medical monitors filled the room. Nova opened her eyes slowly, her throat dry and sore. Her leg throbbed where the dog had bitten her.

She winced, taking a shaky breath.

Then she saw themtwo figures at the door. Her already numb heart twisted in agony.

Sloane stood beside Kael, her eyes wet with fake tears. It’s my fault. I’m so sorry Ms. Hale got hurt.”

Kael rubbed his temples, exhaustion evident in his voice. It’s not your fault. Stop blaming yourself.”

Sloane sniffled and wrapped her arms around his waist. Let me stay and take care of her, please? I can’t live with this guilt. Let me help.”

You’re a victim tooyour arm is hurt. Go home and rest,he said, patting her shoulder gently.

That tenderness felt like a slap to Nova’s face.

Her mind went blank. Pain choked her, making it hard to breathe.

Crash!

She swept her arm across the side table, knocking over a tray of medical supplies.

Kael pushed Sloane away and burst into the room. When he saw Nova sitting up, her eyes red and vacant, his heart lurched.

Nova, you’re awake! I’ll get the doctor!”

Sloane followed him in, standing close to Kael. She looked at Nova, her voice sweet. Ms. Hale, let me help you with your bandages. Your leg might scar if we don’t treat it right.

And pleasedon’t misunderstand. I came here on my own. Kael had nothing to do with it.”

She gave Nova an innocent look.

Chapter 70 TwistCold Goodbye!

Kael frowned and shot Sloane a cold glare.

Nova stared at them, her eyes blazing with anger. She grabbed a glass bottle from the nightstand and hurled it at Sloane.

Sloane’s eyes widened.

She couldn’t dodge in timethe bottle hit her, and shards of glass sliced her calf. She paled, crying out in pain.

Ah!”

Kael was shocked. When he saw Nova reach for another bottle, he rushed over and grabbed her hand. Nova, stop-”

Nova’s heart ached. He was stopping her? Protecting Sloane?

He couldn’t bear to see Sloane hurtbut he didn’t care about her pain. He didn’t care that she’d been attacked, that she’d been humiliated, that she’d been lied to

She took a deep breath and shoved him away, her voice cold as ice. Get out. Both of you.”

Kael stepped forward, worried she’d hurt herself. Nova, don’t be like this-”

Get out!she screamed, pointing at the door. Her voice was sharp, final.

Kael froze, pain etched on his face.

Sloane added softly, Ms. Hale, we’re just trying to help-”

We?

Nova’s throat tightened. She closed her eyes. I said get out. I won’t repeat myself.”

Kael didn’t understand why she was so angry. He frowned, then caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye. His expression hardened.

Fine. Take care of yourself,he said finally.

He turned and left.

Sloane’s calf throbbed, but she smileda winner’s smile. She followed Kael out, closing the door behind her.

She’d left it ajar on purpose just then.

The room fell silentonly the beep of the monitor and Nova’s ragged breathing could be heard.

She collapsed back onto the bed, all her strength gone.

When she closed her eyes, all she saw was Kael’s cold back as he walked away. It felt like a knife in her heart.

He’d always been this waycruel to her, kind to everyone else.

She pulled the covers over her head, muffling her sobs. She didn’t want anyone to see her this weak.

Through her tears, she remembered the good timeswhen Kael had loved her, when he’d hated seeing her hurt.

Once, he’d been on a business trip, and she’d gotten a high fever. She’d hidden it from him during their video call, but he’d noticed. He’d flown back that night, staying up to take care of her.

He’d held her, his voice soft with anger and worry. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have left you alone.”

Back then, she’d never imagined he’d become so cold.

Kaelit hurts, she whispered, her voice hoarse.

The pain in her leg was nothing compared to the pain in her heart. She drifted into a fitful sleep.

Chapter 70 TwistCold Goodbye!

Outside the room, Kael told Sloane to leave, his face hard.

Sloane refused to give up. She reached for his hand. Let me stay, Kael. Please.”

Slap.

He shook off her hand, his jaw tight. Sloane, I won’t say this again. She told you to leaveso leave.”

Sloane’s face turned white, humiliation burning her cheeks.

Leave because she told me to?

Sweetheartshe said, tears in her eyes. She tugged at his shirt, desperate to stay.

He thought of Novahurt, alone, probably crying.

Guilt washed over him. He also remembered Sloane had jumped in front of the dog to save him.

He softened, patting her cheek gently. Be good and go home. Rest.”

Sloane’s heart warmed. She opened her mouth to begbut he turned and walked away, leaving her standing there.

Her hand froze midair.

Where was he going?

She watched his cold, determined back disappear down the hallway, but didn’t dare follow.

Where is he going?
