Over the past six months, I’ve really settled into my job as Alpha With Christian’s help, we’ve created a pack that is running smoothly and efficiently. I trust my Beta and Gamma implicitly, which is important because of what happened to my father. 

When Enya returned home, she had a bunch of ideas about what she wanted to do to change the way we were managing our pack. She discussed them with Christian and I, but I’ve always trusted 

my sister. 

“Enya, do what you want. You know I trust you. You’re so much better at it than I am,” I said. 

She’d blinked at me. “Shane, you’re the Alpha. You need to agree to this.” 

“Enya, you’ve never needed my permission before. Why do you think you need it now?” I had 

asked. 

She had glanced at Christian, then back at me. 

“Because I’m mated to Christian now. When you take over as Alpha and he leaves, I’m going with him. I won’t be here to run this pack with you anymore,” she’d said slowly, as if I was missing the important point. 

I don’t know why it hadn’t occurred to me. I guess because she came home, she was mated to Christian who IS currently living here and who acts and feels like my big brother. He and Enya ARE my family and somewhere inside me, I guess I assumed that we’d always be together. We will, they just won’t be living here, and I won’t see them every day like I do now. 

The reality of the situation that is facing me after my eighteenth birthday hit me hard, harder than I expected. It’s one thing to know that you’re going to take over, to start acting in the role of the Alpha, but it’s very different when you suddenly realize that when you return and take over officially, the security net that you’ve become accustomed to having is going to be gone.
