Chapter 7
Chapter 7
At three in the morning, the room finally went quiet except for running water.
I stepped out from my hiding spot, legs numb from crouching so long. I walked over scattered clothes, left the memory card on the desk, and headed for the door.
A sound made Miller call out from the bathroom. “Did you hear something?”
“It’s three in the morning, baby. Come back…” Mora’s voice was a purr.
The bathroom door opened a crack, then closed again.
I caught my reflection in the window – barely recognized myself – and slipped out.
The streets were empty. No cars. I just walked, mind blank even though my ears were ringing. My wolf was whimpering somewhere deep inside.
When I finally looked up, I’d wandered to the old pack training grounds – Northern Heights Academy.
Seven in the morning. The campus was quiet. I walked the paths alone, everything familiar but strange.
The field where Miller had run drills with me. The ceremonial hall he’d decorated with night-blooming jasmine for my birthday. The gathering grounds where he’d claimed me as his mate in front of everyone…
Same places. Different meanings now.
Near the main building, I ran into my old Pack Mentor. She recognized me immediately.
“Isla? What brings you back? We heard about your upcoming mating ceremony with the Alpha. Here to deliver the formal announcements?”
I smiled. Didn’t reach my eyes. “Just visiting. Been too long.”
We walked together, talking about old training days. Before we parted, she went into her office and came back with a worn journal.
“I took this from Miller during meditation practice years ago. Since you two are bonding soon, you should have it.”
I took it with a small bow.
On the way home, I opened it. Miller’s handwriting, sharp and clear:
“October 3: Isla chased me down after patrol again. Said she’d prove she was worthy of an Alpha. I told her to stop wasting her time. But her determination… it’s something.”
“February 14: She left flowers at my den again. Moonflowers. My favorites. How does she know?”
“June 20: Three years. She’s never given up. Maybe the Moon Goddess is trying to tell me something. Maybe I’ve been the fool.”
“August 8: I said yes today. Claimed her as mine. The look on her face…. I never want to see her cry tears of joy for anyone else. Just me. Forever.”
Every page had my name. A record of something that used to be real.
Tears came. I let them.
When I got to my villa, I’d pulled myself together. Got out of the car and found Miller coming home at the same time.
My eyes went to the bite marks on his neck. Everything from last night crashed back. I looked away.

Miller saw my face – the tear tracks – and frowned. Started to say something.
Mora, wrapped around his arm, smirked at my red eyes. “Thanks for last night, by the way. I sent your payment. The photos turned out perfect – though I bet you enjoyed the live show even more?”
Miller’s heart jumped. “What show?”
“The birthday photos, obviously. Unless you mean the other activities…”
Miller reached to cover her mouth, but she bit his fingers playfully.
I didn’t react. Just turned away. Passed the trash bin on my way in.
Í dropped the journal inside.
All those pages. All that young love and devotion. Gone.
