“Couldn’t fool you, huh? Then let’s carry on with the banquet.” 

Everyone was speechless. 

Wait, what was this? 

They couldn’t keep up with the strange turn of events. 

Just a moment ago, Philip had collapsed in his chair clutching his chest, clearly furious at his son. 

And now the two of them were joking around like nothing had happened? What were the rest of them supposed to be–fools and background props? 

People exchanged bewildered looks, unable to grasp what kind of father–son dynamic this really was. 

Aurora felt the same, completely at a loss. 

“Don’t worry, that’s just how they are,” Lucas murmured beside her. “Grandfather and my uncle both have fiery tempers. Honestly, I can’t figure out how their relationship works half the time.” 

“Well, then I guess that’s their secret,” Aurora said, still puzzled. She couldn’t really comment. She was still new here. 

Edward and Diana were the ones most embarrassed. 

They knew this was how the two always clashed, yet they still had to play along with the act every single year. At this point, they were nearly traumatized by the routine. 

Philip waved cheerfully to the crowd. “Alright, stop staring. This is just how my son and I get along. Don’t take it to heart. Eat, everyone, let’s eat.” 

The others forced polite smiles. Since Philip had put it that way, they couldn’t very well press the matter. To make a fuss now would only make them look foolish. 

Just then, Edwin leaned back in his seat and casually remarked, “Lucas, you’ve worked with Yvonne for years. A strong, independent woman like her suits you far better. 

“Miss Walton looks delicate–she may not be able to handle the burdens of the Carter family.” 

Aurora’s expression stiffened at his words. 

Even Diana and Edward looked displeased. They hadn’t expected Edwin, barely back at the table, to bring something like this up so bluntly. 

Philip gave a cold snort, signaling for Edwin not to go too far. 

This granddaughter–in–law was one he had publicly acknowledged. If Edwin undermined that now, it would disgrace the family in front of everyone. Wouldn’t that only invite ridicule? 

Lucas‘ face darkened as he cut in sharply. “My wife is not yours to judge. Aurora’s capabilities are recognized throughout the entire industry.”

Edward naturally supported his wife’s stance. “That’s right. If you speak this way, Edwin, you’ll only upset us.” 

Seeing his brother’s disapproval, Edwin didn’t dare push further. 

Instead, he forced a laugh. “Why take everything so seriously? I was only making a joke. Can’t even crack a joke without everyone getting offended?” 

He waved his hand dismissively. “Besides, it was just a casual remark. You’re the ones making it so serious, which leaves me looking like the bad guy here.”

gaze turned icy. “If you already know you’re putting yourself in that position, then stop making empty jokes like that. You may think it’s harmless, but we don’t see it that way.”
