After showering, I saw that Samantha had messaged to say she got home safely. I was about to go to sleep but couldn’t resist checking Jack’s Instagram.
Wow, he really went all out these past two days.
Bar hopping, dancing with hot girls, truly living up to his title as the nightclub prince.
Rose even posted a photo of him sleeping shirtless in bed, captioned: “Jack’s so heavy when he’s drunk, I almost couldn’t get out from under him.”
His buddies were all teasing in the comments, many calling Rose “sister–in–law.”
Jack replied: “…You’re just too weak.”
Disgusting.
I resisted the urge to delete them, but I did start cleaning up my own Instagram.
I deleted all the posts about him, cleared our chat history, and suddenly my phone seemed to run faster.
In the past, because I used to sleep late, I always rushed to work with no time for breakfast.
Now, I wake up early, make myself a sandwich, and even have time to take a selfie for Instagram: “A beautiful day starts now!”
After breakfast, I catch the bus to work. It’s a bit crowded. When I get my paycheck this month, I’ll go for my driver’s license test and see if I can get a car on installment next
year.
As soon as I enter the office, my colleague Wendy feigns surprise: “Well, well, if it isn’t Lily! Did the sun rise from the west today? You’re actually on time?”
I feel a bit smug: “I’ll never be late again. I’m definitely going to get that $30 perfect
attendance bonus!”
Wendy marvels at how much I’ve changed over the weekend. I tell her I’ve broken up with my boyfriend.
“Good riddance! That guy was clearly no good, he didn’t deserve you!”
Wendy is delighted, afraid I might go back to him: “Give yourself a couple of days to adjust, then I’ll introduce you to some promising young men. I guarantee they’ll be ten times better than your ex!”
Only after breaking up did I realize how much people around me disliked Jack. I also realized how blind I had been before. But not anymore!
“Quick, grab your notebook. We have a new director joining the company today. They say he’s the young master, just back from studying abroad, and extremely capable!”
My colleagues excitedly rush to the conference room. Being the wallflower that I am, I first go to the restroom to fix my hair.
I think I slept on it funny last night. These waves look good, but they’re a bit high–maintenance.
Wendy calls me, telling me to hurry up as the director has arrived.
I rush towards the conference room. My heels had just gotten a bit wet, and the marble floor is slippery. Just as I’m about to push open the glass door of the conference room,
someone from inside opens it.
I can’t stop my momentum!
I try to grab onto something nearby, but a strong pair of arms wraps around me tightly.
“Ouch-”
The man in front of me lets go, and I see his back hit the decorative shelf. It looks painful.
I quickly bow, my face red with embarrassment: “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to. Are you
okay?”
I wait for a while, but the man doesn’t say anything. Curious, I look up and freeze on the
spot.
It’s not just me; the entire room of nearly a hundred people is staring at us in shock.
“I’m fine. Be careful.”
Ethan looks down at me, a hint of helplessness in his expression.
I’m completely stunned. How can there be such a coincidence in this world?
Ethan is actually the legendary new director.
I open the company’s profile. Great, Gu Corporation.
He won’t think I deliberately came to work here to get close to him, will he?
Just as I’m wondering whether I should explain, Wendy and the others corner me in the break room, their faces full of curiosity: “Not bad, you’re quite bold. Throwing yourself at
him on the first day?”
I’m speechless.
