Chapter 94
Kael’s POV_
I had barely pulled onto the road when my phone buzzed in the passenger seat. I grabbed it, eyes flicking from the screen to the highway ahead.
It was my father.
I sighed. The timing couldn’t have been worse. I stared at the screen for a moment, reluctant to answer. But I couldn’t ignore him.
“Pick up,” Valric growled. “It might be important.”
I hit the answer button. “Yes, Father?”
“Kael,” his voice was tense, almost breathless. “Where are you?”
My fingers tightened on the steering wheel. “Just handling some business.”
“What kind of business?”
“It’s pack–related,” I lied. “Nothing to worry about.”
There was a pause. Then, his voice dropped into something darker.
“You need to come back. Right now.”
My pulse kicked. “What happened?”
“It’s Roxanne. Something is wrong with the pregnancy. She is at the hospital. The doctors are doing everything they can, but it’s serious.”
I closed my eyes and exhaled slowly. “There are doctors with her. I’m not sure what I could
do….”
“She’s carrying your child,” he snapped. “Your child, Kael! Are you telling me you don’t care?”
“I didn’t say that,” I muttered.
“She started bleeding heavily this morning. They rushed her to the hospital. The doctors said that it’s serious…..very serious.”
My stomach twisted, not from guilt but from frustration. I didn’t want to go back. Not now. Not when I was so close to finding Lisa.
Valric snarled in my mind. “She is using that child to control you.”

I ignored him. I swallowed hard and forced emotion into my voice. “Of course I’ll come. I was just… I’m sorry. I’ll head back now.”
“Good. Come quickly.”
He hung up.
I slammed my fist on the steering wheel.
“Damn it!”
Valric growled low. “This is a trap. You know it. She’s faking. They’re pulling you away from
Lisa.”
“We don’t have a choice. If I don’t show up, it’ll look suspicious.”
“Let her die. Let the baby die. This is what we wanted after all.”
“No,” I whispered. “I can’t risk them suspecting me. Not now. Not when I’ve just started getting answers.”
The drive back to Nightshade felt longer than usual. Every minute dragged like hours. My thoughts kept drifting to Lisa.
Was she okay?
Was she in pain?
Was she calling out for help while I was stuck in this act with Roxanne, pretending to care?
It made my chest feel tight. My knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel.
By the time I reached the hospital, it was nearly sunset. The pack hospital loomed ahead. Its brick walls were lit by soft lamps. I parked in a rush and ran up the front steps.
Outside the entrance, Roxanne’s father stood with a worried look on his face.
I approached. “What happened? How is she?”
He looked up at me. His eyes were heavy with worry. “She started complaining about stomach pains. Then there was blood. So much blood. We brought her in immediately. The doctor is still inside with her. They said it’s critical.”
I nodded grimly. “And the baby?”
He looked away. “We don’t know yet.”
I stood beside him and folded my arms tightly across my chest. The hospital smelled like

disinfectant and anxiety. I couldn’t stop pacing.
But my thoughts weren’t with Roxanne.
They were with Lisa.
“We should be with Lisa,” Valric said. “Not here, pretending to care about this.”
“She’s not the one we care about. We need to get back to Lisa. Now.”
“I know,” I whispered. “But I can’t leave now. Not until I see what the outcome is. We also need to make them believe that we really care about Roxanne.”
Minutes turned into what felt like hours.
Then, finally, the doctor stepped out. He removed his mask. His face was somber.
“Kael,” he said softly. “We did everything we could. We managed to save Roxanne’s life, but… we couldn’t save the baby.”
A sharp gasp escaped Roxanne’s mother. She collapsed into her mate’s arms. She was sobbing. My father stepped forward. There was a solemn expression on his face.
“I’m so sorry, son,” he said while placing a hand on my shoulder.
I lowered my head and let my body shake slightly. I forced moisture into my eyes and swallowed the disgust I felt.
“No,” I said shakily. “No, this can’t be happening. Why would the Moon Goddess take our child before it was even born?”
My father hugged me. “You’ll get through this. Roxanne will need you more than ever now.”
I held onto the act. I nodded and kept my face buried in my hands for a moment.
But inside, all I felt was relief.
Morana’s potion had worked.
The baby was gone.
And now, I had confirmation that she wasn’t bluffing.
She was the real deal. She was really a witch and her potions and spells worked.
Valric chuckled darkly. “One obstacle down. Now let’s go get our mate.”
Yes. Lisa was waiting.

And I wouldn’t be kept from her much longer.
Everyone thought I was mourning. But the truth was, all I could think about was Lisa.
And how every second I stayed here was another second I might be losing her for good.
