“Grandpa, you gotta stand up for me!‘ 

As soon as Veda saw Mason appear, she switched gears instantly. 

When Mason and his crew came downstairs, she darted into Mason’s arms, acting all pitiful. She made sure to show the side of her face with the slap mark. “If you hadn’t shown up, Emily would have beaten me to a pulp. I’ve never been treated like this in my life.” 

“What happened?” 

Mason’s eyes landed on Veda’s face, which was still marked with fingerprints. Though he didn’t jump to conclusions, his gaze turned icy as he looked at Emily. 

“What do you think happened? Grandpa, just look at my face! This woman comes to our home for the first time, and I kindly remind her of a few things. She goes nuts and slaps me! If it weren’t for the bodyguards, she would’ve gone at me again!” 

Veda whined, clinging to Mason’s arm. “Grandpa, a woman like her, who I heard used to pick up trash, should be kicked out of the Smith family. She shouldn’t be allowed to show her face here ever again!” 

She shot a challenging look at Emily. 

These words were heavy. If Mason agreed, Emily wouldn’t stand a chance with Daniel. 

The crowd watched Emily with curiosity, amusement, or concern. 

Mason, though he doted on Veda, didn’t make hasty decisions at family gatherings. 

“What do you have to say?” 

“Grandpa…” 

“Quiet, let her speak!” 

Mason cut Veda off, looking intently at Emily. “Did you slap Veda?” 

Emily had initially thought Mason was fair and just, but his question revealed his true stance. 

She glanced apologetically at Daniel, then met Mason’s gaze without a hint of fear. “Yes, I slapped her.” 

“Alright, since you admit it, that’s good. What you did was out of line. We don’t tolerate guests hitting family members. Considering your age, you just need to apologize to Veda, I won’t take it further.” 

Mason had spoken. 

Veda stomped her foot, frustrated. “An apology isn’t enough! I got slapped for nothing! She should kneel and take at least ten slaps, no, 

twenty!”

Daniel’s voice cut through the air. 

His icy glare shut Veda up instantly. 

She looked upset and wanted to say more. 

Daniel walked over to Emily, concern clear in his eyes. “Are you alright? Did you suffer any grievances?” 

It was obvious that Daniel was on Emily’s side. 

Everyone noticed how much Daniel valued Emily, making many feel uneasy. 

Especially those who had mocked Emily earlier, they lowered their heads and shrank back, afraid of being called out. 

Emily smiled and shook her head at Daniel. “I’m fine! I won’t let myself be bullied.” 

“You dare say that! Daniel, are you really going to indulge this deceitful woman? She’s not worthy of you. She acts all sweet in front of you, but she’s two–faced. You don’t know how nasty she was!” 

“Veda, have I spoiled you too much, making you so disrespectful?” 

Daniel’s cold gaze turned to Veda. “Emily is my girlfriend, which makes her your elder. Is this how you treat your elders?” 

“She’s no elder! She’s just a trash picker! Daniel, how can someone as smart as you be fooled by a woman like her?” 

Veda felt utterly humiliated, glaring at Emily with venomous eyes. 

Mason also disapproved, looking at Daniel. “Daniel, you’re Veda’s brother. Criticizing her like this for an outsider is inappropriate.” 

After addressing Daniel, Mason turned his stern gaze to Emily. “Your arrival has disrupted the gathering. You and Daniel are not suitable.” 

Daniel’s face darkened, ready to speak again. 

Emily stopped him, shaking her head to signal she would handle it. 

She met Mason’s gaze with a composed smile. “Mr. Smith, you think we’re unsuitable because I slapped Veda? Even if Veda deserved discipline, you still think so? If that’s the case, the Smith family’s education indeed has issues.” 

The Smith family prided itself on its reputation and heritage. 

Now, it was being questioned. 

Not only Mason but also other members of the Smith family looked at Emily with disapproval, ready to act if she couldn’t justify herself. 

The atmosphere grew tense. 

Veda felt triumphant, thinking Emily was foolish for angering everyone. She believed Emily would never marry into the Smith family now. 

“You’d better have a good explanation. The Smith family’s reputation cannot be questioned or defamed!” Mason spoke coldly.

Daniel’s expression grew darker.

Veda’s eyes flashed with realization, her tone gaining confidence. 

Mason knew Veda well enough to suspect she was lying.

Emily knew Mason was biased towards Veda. She felt disappointed. 

She also knew that under Mason’s and Veda’s intimidating gazes, even those who were fair might not dare to speak up for her. 

Unexpectedly, James, who had been hiding earlier, stepped forward. “Emily, hurry and apologize to Veda. You clearly don’t understand social etiquette, acting out of place.” 

He pretended to be a guardian, then addressed Mason. “Grandpa, Emily is young and has had a tough past. She’s sensitive and not very
