Chapter 126

Lisa’s POV

The moment I heard the voice, my whole body froze. My heart stopped, then slammed against my ribs so hard it hurt

Lisa, childis that you?”

I turned. My knees were weak. The light parted and a woman stepped forward. Her figure shimmered, but her face…..her face was real. She wore white. It was the same flowing dress I had seen in my visions. Blood stained the front, but her eyesher eyes were soft and warm

Mom?My voice cracked, trembling like a broken string

The woman’s lips quivered into a smile. She ran toward me. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe. And then her arms wrapped around me. She was warm. She was solid

I broke. I buried my face into her chest. I was sobbing so hard I thought I would shatter

Lisa, my baby, she whispered, her hand stroking my hair. I can’t believe this. You are really here. I can hold you in my arms.”

I clung to her like I had never clung to anyone. I felt like the child I had once been, begging for

someone to love me

You’re really my mother?I whispered. My throat was raw

Althea pulled back just enough to look at me. Her eyes were brimming with tears but she smiled through them. Yes, my darling. Look at youso grown now. You were so little, so little when I last held you.Her fingers brushed my cheek, trembling. I never thought I would

see you again.”

Fresh tears poured from me. I’m so sorry, Mom. I’m sorry for everything Fenric did to you. He

has been so cruel to you. To us.”

Her face darkened but she shook her head. No, Lisa. It is not your fault. None of this was ever your fault.”

I wanted to believe her but guilt twisted in my stomach. I lowered my eyes. He destroyed you. He destroyed everything. And I couldn’t stop him.”

Althea cupped my face gently. You were just a baby. You were not meant to stop him. Do not carry my pain as your burden.”

Then her brows furrowed. But what are you doing here, child? You are not supposed to be in this place.”

I swallowed hard. My voice trembled. YesFenric has trapped me. He tricked me. I went to the ruins of Eldermoor. Morana was guiding me. We were going to perform a ritualto break his immortality. To make him mortal again so we could defeat him. But insteadhe trapped me here. In the past. I don’t know how to return back to the present.”

Saying it aloud made me feel like the biggest fool in the world. My chest ached with shame. I was such a fool, Mom. I walked right into his trap.”

Her expression softened but her eyes were sharp. You wish to make him mortal?”

I nodded. Yes. But I can’t now. I’m trapped. I’m useless like this.”

Don’t you dare say that. Her voice turned firm. It was almost fierce. She lifted her wrist and showed me. Strange black symbols curled like chains over her pale skin. They glowed faintly. Look at me. Do you see these marks?”

I stared. My heart was pounding. What are they?”

These are the chains of the dead. I am already gone. A spirit. I am bound here, unable to move on. This is what Fenric did to me. But youshe grabbed my hands and turned them palm up, showing me my unmarked wrists

You are still alive. You do not bear these chains. That means you are capable. You are not beyond hope.”

My chest tightened. For the first time, a small flame of strength flickered inside me

Althea’s voice shook with pain. “Fenric made it so that I would suffer for eternity. He could not lift his curse, so he left me here, wandering, tied to this endless nightmare. But there is a way for me to find peace. The spell that binds me is carved into a statue hidden in the ruins of Nightcrest. Lisa, you must destroy it. Only then will I be free.”

Tears blurred my vision again. MomI’ll do it. I’ll do anything to give you peace.”

Her eyes shone with gratitude, but then she tilted her head. But first… you must break his

pact.”

My chest grew tight. “His pact with the demon?”

Yes.” She turned and motioned me to follow. Her white dress glided across the ground as if she were weightless. I followed. My legs were shaky

The walls of light shifted until they opened into a terrible memory. Fenric stood at an altar. He was young and desperate. Before him, shadows twisted and formed into the hulking demon

My stomach knotted as I watched him bargain

The demon’s voice rumbled: If you crave immortality, you must feed menot with warriors, not with kingsbut with the blood of innocents. Their screams, their terror, their blood. These are my feasts. The more you give, the longer your reign.”

Fenric’s voice had dripped with madness: Yes. I will drown the earth in their blood if it means I never wither.”

I gagged and covered my mouth. Rage burned hot inside me

Althea’s voice was low. He killed many, Lisa. The pact was fed with the souls of innocents. Babies. Children. Their blood was the purest of all. And those soulsthey never found peace. They are still trapped. Like me.”

I shook, my fists clenched. Where are they?”

Here,” she whispered

The memory shifted. And I saw them

Countless small figures stood in a vast field of gray mist. Children with hollow eyes. Babies with no cries, only silence. Their faces were pale, empty, their hands reaching out but never touching anything

My knees gave out. I collapsed. My chest hurt so badly I could barely breathe

Oh GodI sobbed. He did this to them? He trapped them?”

Althea knelt beside me. Yes. And as long as their souls are chained, his pact remains strong. That is why he is immortal. If you free them, the pact shatters. Fenric will bleed like a mortal man again.”

Sierra’s voice burned in my mind. It was sharp and urgent. Lisa, this is it. This is the way. If you free them, you break him

But how?I whispered. I don’t know how to free them.”

Althea touched my chest, over my heart. You carry the same sacred blood I did. You are connected to me, to them. Your soul is light, Lisa. You only need to call them home. Give them peace.”

I shook my head. I’m not strong enough.”

Her voice was soft. Yes, you are. You are my daughter.”

I stared at the children again. Their hollow eyes broke me apart

Sierra whispered inside me. We can do this. Open yourself. Call them. You are their only chance

I pressed my hand to my chest. Come to me,I whispered. My voice trembled. Please. You don’t have to suffer anymore. You don’t have to be afraid. Come home.”

At first, nothing happened. But then, the mist rippled. One child stepped forward. Then another. Tiny hands reached for me

I cried harder. Yes, come. Please, I’ll carry you. You are free. You are safe.”

Light burst from my chest. It spread like fire but it was soft and warm. The children’s eyes glowed. One by one, they began to dissolve into sparks of light. They were drifting upward and leaving the gray behind. Their silence turned to laughter

Althea wept beside me. She placed her hand over her mouth. You’re doing it, Lisa. You’re freeing them.”

I reached out as more children came. Babies, small girls, young boys. They touched my hands, my arms, and then turned into light. Thousands of sparks filled the air until it looked like a sky of stars

The chains of Fenric’s pact were breaking. I could feel it. The ground trembled faintly

Sierra’s voice was fierce with triumph. Yes! You’re undoing him, Lisa. He will fall

I cried with them. Every soul that rose tore another wound from my heart, but also sewed me back together with hope

Finally, the last child vanished in a burst of light. The mist was gone. The field was empty

Silence fell

I collapsed to my knees. I felt completely drained. Tears covered my face. My chest ached but it also felt lighter

Althea touched my shoulder. Her face was glowing with pride and sorrow. You did it. You freed them.”

But before relief could settle, the walls around us shook violently. The maze of light quaked. Cracks tore across the ground

What’s happening?I gasped

Althea’s face turned grave. He knows. Fenric knows what you’ve done.”

The light above us darkened into shadow

“The Wolf Who Couldn’t Shift”

1. The Outcast of Nightshade Pack

Lisa had always been the outcast of her own home — a wolf without a wolf.

In the Nightshade Pack, turning twenty-one meant power, dominance, and pride. Every werewolf her age had already shifted, embracing their animal half. But Lisa hadn’t. Her wolf had never emerged.

Because of that, she was treated as an anomaly, a failure, and a source of shame.
Her parents ignored her. The pack ridiculed her. Even her own blood — her beautiful, perfect sister Roxanne — made her life a living nightmare.

Roxanne was everything Lisa wasn’t: strong, admired, and loved. The perfect daughter. The shining jewel of the family. And to make matters worse, Roxanne was dating Kael Blackthorn, the Alpha’s son — a man everyone respected and desired.

For Lisa, that was the final reminder of her insignificance. Every time she saw them together, it only highlighted the chasm between their worlds.

2. A Celebration That Wasn’t Hers

That night was Roxanne’s birthday, and their mother had transformed their home into a grand venue — lights, laughter, and music filled the air. Roxanne had been gifted a stunning red gown, handpicked by their mother, while Lisa was given a single task: serve the guests.

No one remembered Lisa’s birthday a few months ago. No cake. No presents. No “happy birthday.” Her parents had said it plainly before — Roxanne came first.
Lisa was simply expected to sacrifice and stay silent.

Still, she wanted to look decent. She chose a modest navy-blue dress, applied light makeup, and promised herself she wouldn’t let the night break her.

But the universe — or rather, Roxanne — had other plans.

3. Sister Cruelty

The door burst open, and Roxanne walked in like a queen entering a servant’s quarters. Her crimson lips curved into a smirk.

“What are you doing? You should be downstairs, not wasting time,” she sneered.

“I’ll be down in a minute,” Lisa replied softly, trying to keep her calm.

Roxanne’s eyes glinted with malice. Without warning, she snatched Lisa’s face cream from the dresser and poured it all over her dress.

Lisa gasped as the thick cream soaked through the fabric, staining it completely.

“Roxanne!” she cried, panic and disbelief trembling in her voice. “Why would you do that?”

“Because you’re embarrassing,” Roxanne replied coldly. “You think dressing up will make people notice you? No one cares what you look like, Lisa. You’re nothing but a burden.”

Tears blurred Lisa’s vision as she ran downstairs, desperate for justice. But when she told their mother what had happened, she was met with scorn.

“Roxanne would never do that,” her mother said sharply. “Stop making excuses. Go change and get back to work.”

And there Roxanne stood beside her, smug and triumphant, watching Lisa break in silence.

4. The Invisible Sister

Lisa changed into an old, faded dress — dull and shapeless.
When she finally entered the main hall, guests were already laughing and drinking, the music echoing through the night.

She moved quietly among them, balancing trays and forcing smiles. She served drinks, ignored whispers, and endured Roxanne’s cruel jokes.

One of Roxanne’s friends gave Lisa a small, pitying smile.
“Oh, you must be Lisa, right? Roxanne’s sister?”

Before Lisa could answer, Roxanne appeared and laughed loudly.
“Don’t bother talking to her! She’s just the help tonight — our little maid.”

Her friends giggled, glancing at Lisa like she was a joke.
“She’s really your sister?” one asked. “She doesn’t even look like she belongs here.”

“She doesn’t,” Roxanne said proudly. “She’s an embarrassment to the family.”

The laughter burned like fire in Lisa’s ears. But she didn’t fight back.
She had learned long ago that silence hurt less than hope.

5. The Alpha’s Arrival

Suddenly, the noise died down. All eyes turned toward the entrance.

The Alpha, Luna, and their son Kael Blackthorn — Roxanne’s boyfriend — had arrived. Their presence demanded respect, their aura commanding silence.

Kael was striking — tall, dark-haired, eyes sharp and unreadable. Power radiated from him effortlessly.
He walked straight to Roxanne, pulling her into his arms, kissing her in front of everyone.

The crowd cheered. Roxanne basked in the attention like it was her birthright.

Lisa’s stomach twisted. Not out of jealousy — but from the ache of being so invisible even to those who shared her blood.

“Lisa!” Roxanne called, her tone dripping with authority. “Bring drinks for me and Kael.”

Lisa obeyed. She returned with a tray of crystal glasses, keeping her head down. But when she approached, she felt his gaze.

Kael was watching her.

“Is that your sister?” he asked, his voice low and deep. “What’s her name? I don’t think I’ve seen her before.”

Roxanne laughed, tightening her arm around him.
“Oh, don’t bother. She’s not important. Just the family failure. Focus on me.”

Then she kissed him again — possessive, showy, territorial.

6. The Breaking Point

Something inside Lisa snapped.

For years, she had swallowed humiliation, endured cruelty, and told herself it didn’t matter. But as she stood there, watching her sister claim everything — their parents’ love, the pack’s respect, even Kael’s attention — something deep within her stirred.

Maybe it was anger. Maybe it was pain. Maybe it was the first stirrings of the wolf she thought she’d never have.

But it was there — hot, alive, awake.

She placed the tray down calmly, ignoring Roxanne’s voice calling after her.
She walked away — past the laughter, past the whispers, past every face that had ever looked at her with pity.

They could laugh. They could mock.
But one day, they would see.

7. A Shift Waiting to Happen

As the night went on, Lisa slipped quietly outside. The cool air hit her face, carrying the scent of pine and moonlight.

The party’s laughter echoed behind her, but she barely heard it. Her heart pounded with a strange rhythm, her blood burning beneath her skin.

Something was happening — a pull in her soul, a whisper in her bones.

She tilted her head toward the moon, feeling its glow on her skin.
For the first time in her life, she didn’t feel weak. She felt something ancient stirring inside her, clawing to be free.

Maybe her wolf wasn’t gone.
Maybe it had just been waiting — for the moment Lisa stopped begging to be seen, and started seeing herself.

8. The Beginning of Change

Inside, the celebration continued. Roxanne laughed, oblivious to the storm brewing.

Kael’s eyes flicked toward the window where Lisa stood in the moonlight. For a brief second, something unreadable crossed his expression — curiosity, or maybe recognition.

He didn’t know it yet. None of them did.
But the quiet, invisible girl they had mocked all her life was about to become something far greater than any of them could imagine.

Because sometimes, the wolves who are late to shift…
Are the ones destined to lead the pack.
