_Lisa’s POV_
The world spun around me as the silver light spat me out. My chest heaved as if I had been running for hours. I fell forward but did not touch the ground. Instead, I drifted. I felt completely weightless.
Cold air rushed through me, not against me. It was strange. My hands reached down, but they touched nothing.
My breath froze. “Where… am I?”
I turned. The trees of the forest rose tall and dark around me. The night was quiet except for the sound of owls and the wind brushing through leaves. I knew this place. I had come back. I was in the present.
But something was wrong.
I looked down at myself. My body wasn’t solid. It shimmered faintly. It was see–through, like mist caught in moonlight. I tried to touch the ground again. My fingers slipped through the
soil.
My stomach twisted. “No. No, this can’t be happening. Why don’t I feel… real?”
Sierra’s voice stirred in my head. She was anxious. Lisa… you are spirit. You left your body
behind.
My heart sank. “Then where is my body?”
Before Sierra could answer, I heard laughter. It was soft and childlike. I turned quickly. The freed souls were here. They were glowing faintly like fireflies. They circled me. Their voices were gentle.
“Look there,” one whispered while pointing with a small glowing hand.
I followed their gaze and froze.
Through the trees, I saw her.
My body.
It was moving. Walking through the forest. Her…my long dark brown hair swayed with each step. My familiar figure moved slowly but steadily as if pulled toward something.
My breath caught. “That’s… me.”

Without thinking, I floated forward and glided through the air like a ghost. The closer I came, the more certain I was. The curve of my face, the shape of my hands, the faint scar on my
wrist. It was me.
But I was here. And my body was there.
I whispered hoarsely, “But is this possible? How can I be here and there at the same time?”
The souls gathered near me. “Because it is not you walking. Someone else is using your body.”
The words struck me like lightning. My whole chest clenched. “What do you mean… someone
else?”
“You are soul,” one child said. “Your body is empty when you are gone. And another soul has stepped inside.”
I shook my head wildly. “No. That’s not possible. My body is mine. Only mine!”
Sierra growled in my mind. Lisa… calm yourself. If they are right, then we face something worse than Fenric.
The thought made my stomach twist harder.
I looked at my body again. She stopped suddenly and leaned against a tree. Her shoulders trembled. I thought maybe she was fighting….maybe it was me breaking through. My heart leapt with hope.
I rushed closer. “That’s it! I can take myself back.”
The souls nodded. “Try.”
I focused with all my strength. I willed myself to sink back into that body. I reached out and pushed forward with everything I had. For a moment, I thought I was inside. I felt skin. I felt breath.
But then…..something pushed me back. Hard.
Dark energy rippled from my body like black smoke. It burned against me, forcing me away. I screamed in frustration.
The souls flinched. One whispered, “Do you feel it? That is why. There is power inside her. Dark power. Stronger than you are now.”
I gasped for air I didn’t even have. “Who is it? Who’s inside me?”
The souls exchanged worried looks. Their glow dimmed.

Finally, one said, “We do not know their name. But their spirit is sharp, old and wicked. It clings to you like poison.”
I clutched my head. “Then what does they want with my body?”
“They are walking toward Shadowrune,” another answered. “Toward danger. Toward him.”
Fenric.
The name wasn’t spoken, but I felt it in the chill that rolled down my spine.
My hands trembled. “No. No, I can’t let them do this. That’s my body! My blood! Fenric will use it. He’ll win!”
Sierra growled deep inside me. We cannot give in to panic. Think. There must be another
way.

The souls came closer, their lights brushing against me like soft hands. “There is another way,” one whispered.
I jerked my head toward them. “Tell me! Please!”
“If that soul can step into your body, then balance must allow the opposite. You can step into theirs.”
I froze. My heart pounded painfully. “Into theirs?”
“Yes,” the voices chorused. “Equal and opposite. Their soul steals your vessel. You can take theirs.”
For a moment I couldn’t breathe. My thoughts tangled. “But… but what if I can’t? What if it breaks me?”
Sierra’s voice was firm. Lisa. Listen to them. This may be the only way. You cannot get back what is yours…not yet. But if you go into that body, you may fight from there.
My throat closed with fear. “You mean… live in their body?”
Her answer was low and steady. Yes.
The souls gathered tighter around me. “We will help you,” they said. “We will make you light….light enough to pass. Just trust us.”
I shook my head, but then looked again at my body. She had pushed off the tree and was walking faster now. She looked determined. She looked like me. And yet, she was not me.
If I lost her, I lost everything.

I pressed my trembling hands together. “Fine. Do it. Help me.”
The souls joined hands. Their light flared. It was warm and gentle. It washed over me.

I felt myself changing. My edges blurred. My body grew faint, more transparent, like mist melting into the air. My chest felt weightless. My whole form was fading.
Panic gripped me. “Wait! What if I disappear? What if I die?”
“Trust,” the voices sang. “Trust.”
Sierra whispered sharply, Lisa, hold on. Do not fear. This is your strength.
I squeezed my eyes shut. The warmth wrapped around me tighter. I let go. I let myself fade.
And then…..there was darkness.
For a heartbeat, I thought I was gone forever.
Then, I opened my eyes.
I was lying in a bed. My chest rose and fell with steady breaths. I touched my face and felt skin. It was warm and solid. I felt alive.
Relief crashed over me. I was back. I was in a body again.
But then the relief shattered.
Something was wrong.
The sheets smelled of herbs and smoke. The room was large, with heavy curtains that blocked the moonlight. The air was thick and familiar in a way that chilled me. I knew this place.
Slowly, I pushed myself up. My arms were thin, pale, and marked with scars I didn’t know. My pulse quickened.
“No…” I whispered.
I staggered to my feet. My legs were unsteady. The floor was cold beneath me. My heart pounded as I crossed to the mirror standing in the corner.
I forced myself to look.
And froze.
The reflection was not mine.

Blue eyes. Sharp cheekbones. A cruel and familiar face.
Katherine.
I stumbled back, my hand flying to my cheek. The mirror showed her hand, not mine.
My voice broke into a whisper. “No. No, no, no… this can’t be.”
But it was.
I was inside Katherine’s body.
And somewhere out there, Katherine was walking in mine.
