Chapter 33Â
I settle my mind on the task at hand, calming my own nerves, and when Dane calls the start, I take off running. Ryan is faster than me on the upper body ladder, but just barely. When I get to the top, I take my own advice and focus on the second level. This one is a rope bridge. The faster you go, the easier it is to cross it, but you have to maintain your balance. The scratch on Cassie’s check is probably a rope burn.Â
I get across the second level easily and then race across the third, barely avoiding falling as the padded cylinders spin. When I reach the backside of level three, I stop. I catch my breath and look at level four. I know the bar will come swinging down and I won’t make it across. So, instead, I carefully take several steps out onto the narrow walkway until I hear the click of the bar being released. As soon as I do, I race back to the start until the bar swings past me. The moment the walkway is clear, I race across, narrowly missing getting hit as the bar swings back.Â
“Well done, Sebi! Keep going,” Ryan says. I look up and see that he waited for me.Â
SebastianaÂ
I climb the ladder to the next level as Ryan races across on his side. I watch as fire blasts out from different directions. Ryan ducks, leaps, and rolls to the other side where water pours on top of him. Then, he turns to watch me.Â
I take time to look at where I think the fire is going to come from, then I race to the other side. I duck when the first blast shoots out at my head from my right side, then leap when the second blast comes from the left at calf level. The next one shoots from both sides, straight at your torso. Not being as tall as Ryan, I choose to slide under the blast of fire rather than leap over it. Then I hop up and race to the end where I, too, am doused with water.Â
“Well, done, Sebi,” I hear Ryan say. By the time the water shuts off, Ryan is gone.Â
I step into level six and stare at the frozen bars that I have to cross to get to the other side. Shit! I’ m soaking wet and these bars are going to be slippery as hell.Â
I carefully begin making my way across, but halfway, I lose my footing. I grab for a bar to catch myself, but my wet hands slide right off of it, and I go crashing to the ground, bumping my head on the way down.Â
Ryan drops off The Beast and Dane comes running over to check on me.Â
“Are you okay?” Dane asks.Â
“Yeah, I bumped my head, but I’m okay.”Â
“Medical center,” Dane says.Â
I nod. I know it’s useless to argueÂ
“How far did you get?” he asks. Ryan smiles proudly at me.Â
“Level six,” I say, grinning as Dane helps me to my feet.Â
“Well done, Sebi. Go get your head checked.”Â
“Thanks, Dane.” I say quietly.Â
Ryan walks me to the medical center where I’m told there’s no concussion, just a bad bump with bruising, and to come back if my vision blurs or I have any dizziness.Â
As I’m walking out, Shane is walking in with Jackson. He’s got a cut by his eye and a bruise already starting from the cut up to his hairline.Â
“It’s a busy day, today,” Dr. Whit says.Â
