I just barely duck out of the way of a punch headed for my chin. 

“If I were him, I’d be more worried about Christian, honestly,” Ryan says, walking over. 

“You’re talking about your brother,” I snarl. 

“Yeah. I know my brother very well. He’s number one on the leaderboard for a reason,” Ryan says. 

“And mated to your sister. You’re right, Ry, that’s a dangerous combination for an Alpha who’s away from his pack for six months.” 

“Christian would never betray me,” I say, trying to remember that this is hell week, but I can feel these two getting into my head. 

“I doubt he planned on it, but Enya’s pregnant now. That changes a man, especially an Alpha. Maybe he wants a pack for his heir. He’s been managing your pack for a year and a half, he saved the pack from ruin,” Ryan says shrugging. “If you were a pack member, who would you want for an Alpha? Number one on the leaderboard, or the kid who nearly let his pack fall into the hands of a criminal,” Ryan says. 

“Yeah, your family doesn’t exactly have a good track record with trusting the right people, do they Shane?” Dane says. 

“Dorian was an asshole,” I snarl. 

“Yeah, he was, and your father never saw his betrayal coming did he? Honestly, if it wasn’t for Christian, no one would have ever known. Dorian would have gotten away with it, and he’d be running your pack now. Again, I have to wonder, who would the pack prefer as their Alpha? Someone they trust, or someone who hasn’t even passed the Academy yet. Sometimes, the pack’s choices impact the Alpha’s ability to lead,” Ryan says.. 

“And who’s to say your Beta and Gamma aren’t thriving under Christian’s tutelage now. Aren’t both your ranked members older than you? Maybe they would prefer someone more established, more seasoned to be their Alpha,” Dane says. 

Ryan shrugs. “All we’re saying is, a lot can change in six months. Do you think you’ve trusted the right people in your life, Shane? You left my brother, running your pack with your sister, your older, pregnant sister, whom the pack loves and would easily accept as their Luna, to come play

“Fuck you both!” I snarl, spinning on my heel and stalking off the sparring field. 

When I walk back toward the dorms, I see Sebastiana. She smiles when she sees me. I guess she wasn’t that broken after all. 

“Hey, how was class?” she asks.

I hear her ask someone what happened, but I don’t stick around to hear what they say. 

I shower and then get ready for afternoon classes. Thankfully, I don’t have any with Tiana until tonight. Sex class. 

I sit on my bed, my head in my hands. Tiana has said it from the very beginning. She wanted to be number one on the leaderboard. She’s been training for that her whole life. I’ve watched her ask every warrior, every Alpha, every current and previous instructor who came to my pack to spar with her so she could make herself stronger and better. I’ve sparred with her and yes, I’ve gotten stronger because of it, but she does know my weaknesses, all of them. She knows my emotional weaknesses and my physical ones. She could very easily use that against me to beat me here at the Academy.
