“No. I heard you had a kid with your wife.”
“Baby, I don’t have a kid. No children. None. There is no way on earth I would procreate with anyone but you.”
“Not buying it. Thisbe said you were going to get the legal heir from your wife, Duchess, I think her name was. Stupid name for a woman. It’s a dog’s name. Regardless, you said you’d have a baby with her and make it your legal heir and any kids you had with me wouldn’t get fuck all.”
“I can explain all this, but I don’t think this is the time and place. Why don’t we sit down?”
“There is no we. You have a wife and a kid.”
“I don’t have a fucking kid!” he snapped finally. “The only person in the family who has a kid is my brother Glenn and he’s six almost seven. He was unexpected and his mother dumped the boy on my brother’s doorstep and left. He’s a single father and we’re all helping him as much as we can but that is the only child in the family presently.”

It was Glenn’s son that Ford was talking about. She hated the rush of relief at the words. She shouldn’t care.
“Well,” she tried to play it off, “I don’t care either way. Go home to your legal wife and make a legal baby so they can be the legal heir of your illegal enterprises.”
“Where is your store manager? You will need her to lock up because you and I are going to go have a talk and sort this shit out. You are my wife. You are my only wife.”
“Not legally.”
“I will rectify that the minute we are back home.”
“I am home.”
“Our home. In New York.”
“Yeah, that’s not happening.‘
He stepped closer to her again and she backed up another
step.
“Stop running, baby. You know you want to come back

home. I can see it in your eyes. I know you’re hurt but your body, your soul, your heart, is calling for you to come back to me.”
As if. She shot Thisbe a look. “How often have you heard
him use lines like this on women? I bet for a mafia
kingpin he doesn’t have to sweeten up his words too much for them.”
“He hasn’t even looked sideways at another woman since he met you.” Thisbe offered weakly.
“Except his fiancée slash wife named after a dog.”
“Actually, it always reminded me of a cat, like the one from the old Disney movie. She is just as pretentious, but she never was going to be my wife. You are my one and only. It will only ever be you.”
He moved closer then and put his hands on her shoulders and she immediately brought her knee up and caught him in the balls and when he bent forward, she landed
a solid punch to his nose. It immediately cracked, a splintering sound echoing and punctuated by Thisbe’s gasp of horror.

Then the tell–tale click of a shotgun being cocked behind her made January look over her shoulder and a wide grin pulled her face. Standing there with a smug looking Lottie was the elderly man, Moe, from the hardware store across
the street.
“I believe the lady asked you to leave and unless you want to get involved in a shootout with me and my friends,” Moe nodded to the sidewalk visible through the glass of the window of the shop, “who have rounded up the few of your thugs blocking our streets, I suggest you do as she asked.”
Blood dripping down his face, Gulliver reached into his pocket slowly when Moe made a tsking noise from the back of his throat. “Just grabbing a handkerchief to wipe up the blood my wife has spilled.”
“It’s my understanding she’s single. No marriage certificate. I know because my son is the lawyer in town and she asked him to double check very discretely several years ago to make sure she didn’t need to file for a divorce. He told me back then how pathetic of a man you are for trapping a woman the way you did, and I was inclined to agree. It’s time for you to move along.” 4/7

“January, we need to talk this out.”

“Oh, I think Moe and I are on the same page. The only difference is, my shotgun is out back, and I couldn’t get to it fast enough. Thankfully my friends have my back.” She shot Lottie a thankful glance and she winked back.
“This entire town has her back and if you think that’s not much, I’m a former marine. My son before he became a lawyer was a marine. The guy who runs the diner in town, my son’s best friend, is also a marine. We have two rangers and two retired rangers who live in this town. Those are the men out there now. I have a neighbor who was a sharpshooter for the army and friends who I used to serve with who are now in a motorcycle club. They’d drive the thirty minutes to give me back up without a blink. As I said, you were asked to leave our town.” Moe growled.
“January, baby, please.”
“Don’t call me baby. You lied. You fooled me into
thinking I was your wife. You hid everything about
yourself. You and your sister made a complete idiot out of me, and I hate you for it. Nearly eight years since I walked Su of your house and I still hate you for it.”

“You say that” he calmly wiped the blood off his face, ignoring the gun from the man who had moved closer to January to protect her, “but you forget I know you better than you know yourself. I know you inside and out. You’re scared but you don’t have to be. You feel it. The same way we felt it the day I first saw you at the school. You feel that connection. Our souls are bound together my darling, and I love you too much to give up on us. If you would let me explain, I’m sure you would understand and we would be together.”
“Not happening.”
He reached into his pocket again and took out a card and placed it on the counter near him. “My number. You call it when you’re ready to talk.” He looked at Moe, “thank you for protecting my girl. She was my world and she remains my world. I’ll see you soon sweetheart.”
“Gully, we can’t just go?” Thisbe asked pleadingly. “Do something.”
“Yes. We can. She’s not receptive yet. Come on.” He wrapped his arm around Thisbe’s shoulder and escorted her out of the store.

She watched as they got into their cars and Moe followed them out, ordering his friends to let everyone go so they could leave their town. The minute the cars pulled away from the curb, she let her body fall to the floor and the sobs take over.
