I started attacking before I could think. My mate was in the center of this death ring of attackers, and I had to get to his side. Megan! I screamed, and I watched her wince. Start funneling him power. He’s weak and not healing.Â
Okay! She ran back into the trees. And soon I felt the pull of power, and my stomach untwisted. Rowan’s head snapped up, and I saw a little panic enter his eyes.Â
“GO!” He bellowed at me as I grabbed another wolf and shook it. Sequan dodged in next to me, and together we started tag teaming the wolves from the back. “I said leave me!” Rowan screamed again after he had swiped the face off a wolf trying to sneak in from behind.Â
I refused to answer him or even look at him. He wasn’t going to convince me to leave him here, ready to die at the edge of the fight. “Stupid man.” I growled lowly as I raked my claws down another’s flank.Â
It took a few deaths before the crowd realized we were attacking from the back. Some turned to face us, but they were no match for Sequan and me. The wolves surrounding Rowan were trained. These weren’t typical rogues. These are trained guards.” Sequan jumped over my back as he said it, tackling another wolf.Â
“I was just thinking that.” I bit off a paw, earning a screech of pain from the she–wolf in front of me. I spat it out and dove for the kill. I watched the light fade from her eyes, and I felt nothing. “I’m going to need you to keep attacking back here.” I shout over the snarls from the wolf in front of me.Â
Sequan quickly glanced at me. “What dol you mean?” He tackled a wolf trying to sneak up on me. He snapped the male’s neck and dropped him to the ground right as I ran back a few steps. He turned to look at me, giving me the perfect angle I needed.Â
“Just keep attacking.” I yelled as I sprinted at him. He braced himself for an attack that wasn’t coming, but it gave me the opportunity to launch myself up into the air.Â
“Amy!” Sequan yelled after me. But I was already airborne. I flew over the wolves circling and attacking Rowan.Â
I was nearly to him when a wolf tried to jump at me, his teeth snapping near my paw, but I sliced my claws at him at the last moment and opened up four deep claw marks across his face. I felt his eye give way under my hit, and once again I gagged.Â
Nix chortled at my reaction. This is war, and you are squeamish.Â
Rowan turned and did a double take right as I landed on the wolf about to attack him. My teeth found the back of its next and I bit right through it, the head dropping from the weight. His mouth dropped open as I dropped the chunk of flesh near his feet. “Did you just jump over everyone, land on a wolfs back, and almost bite completely through its neck?”Â
I tilted my head. “It was about to bite you.” I just shook my head as I turned away, positioning myself on his backÂ
He choked for a second. “You said that as if it were an explanation.”Â
I lunged for another wolf, biting and scratching as it tried to run. My claws sunk into his flank, and I ripped off a leg, flinging it off to the right. “Because it was.”Â
I lost track of how many wolves I went through, but eventually the fighting slowed. Sequan broke through and joined us in the center. He had a few bite marks, but most looked superficial.Â

Realizing that Rowan was no longer alone and an easy target, the remaining wolves grew cautious. They all turned and fled, leaving the three of us alone to catch our breath. I looked over the field that we were in, and the only fighting that was still going on was in front of the pack house. I could see a ton of wolves still trying to fight their way into the pack house, and another group of wolves still defending it.Â
“Should we head over to the pack house?” Sequan was catching his breath, and I quickly looked him over. His wounds were already healed, and he was ready to go.Â
I turned to my mate, and I could see the wounds slowly healing on his body. “Why are you healing so slowly?”Â
“Silver…” He panted as another wound closed over. “Not enough to kill, just enough to inhibit my healing. Like wolfsbane for wolves.” He panted as the pain rolled through him. “It makes me slower…and weaker. Brings me down to wolf’s strength.” He grunted as he fell forward, catching himself on his fist.Â
His words hit me like a bat. “That’s how they killed so many Lycans…they made them weaker, like a wolf, and then ganged up on them.”Â
Rowan nodded weakly once. “Yeah…I just figured it out myself.” His laugh was pained. “It fucking hurts.”Â
