Chapter 16Â
Cassian leaned in, his breath hot against Aurelia’s car–a silent invitation.Â
Once, that closeness would have made her weak in the knees. But now, she felt nothing. In fact, she felt a linle sick.Â
She tried to push him away, but the second her palm touched his chest, Cassian turned his head and kissed her.Â
The move was sudden–she didn’t even have time to dodge before his lips found hers.Â
The old Aurelia had loved kissing Cassian. She had been addicted to it.Â
Cassian was a man of discipline–he didn’t smoke and rarely drank. Kissing him always felt clean and cool, like breathing in the freshness of a minty morning. It used to make her heart race every time.Â
But this time, she didn’t let him continue, She turned her head aside.Â
Cassian didn’t seem to notice she was resisting. His lips brushed against her ear next, soft and slow, his breath burning against her skin. “Is it over?” he murmured.Â
They were pressed so close that Aurelia could feel how aroused he was. A cold thought flickered through her mind–maybe Tessa hadn’t been satisfying him lately.Â
Cassian seemed to notice her distraction. His large hand clamped around her waist, pressing her firmly against the edge of the dining table until there was no space left between them.Â
“If you don’t answer, I’ll check myself,” he said lowly. His hand started to slide down from her waist.Â
Aurelia caught his wrist, realization striking her. He wasn’t talking about them being over–he was asking if her period was over.Â
She opened her mouth to say something, but Cassian’s phone suddenly rang, cutting through the heavyÂ
silence,Â
She recognized the sound immediately–it was the ringtone for his personal line.Â
Cassian took out his phone without hesitation, and Aurelia’s eyes caught the name on the screen. It was Tessa.Â
Something in her snapped. Before Cassian could answer, she grabbed the hand holding his phone, stood on her toes, and kissed him first.Â
This time, Cassian turned his head away. “Enough,” he said sharply.Â
“Didn’t you want it?” Aurelia’s voice was steady, but her meaning was clear.Â
They said when a man really wanted something, nothing else mattered–not reason, not restraint. AureliaÂ
wanted to test that.Â

But Cassian proved her wrong–he pushed her back firmly and answered Tessa’s call.Â
All the strength drained from her limbs. She slumped against the dining table, watching him turn away. His voice softened when he spoke. “What’s wrong?”Â
Aurelia couldn’t hear Tessa’s voice, but whatever she said made Cassian’s expression change. His tone grew anxious. Tll be right there.”Â
With that, he hung up, crossed the room, grabbed the jacket draped over the armrest, and left.Â
He never looked back.Â
The door stayed closed for a long, long time before Aurelia finally moved,Â
She told herself it was fine. It wasn’t the first time he’d walked out on her for someone else.Â
Taking a deep breath, she unlocked her phone, opened the smart lock app, and changed her door code. Only then did she glance out the window.Â
As she expected, nothing had changed.Â
Later that night, Tessa walked Cassian to the parking garage. “Cassian, thank you for tonight. If it weren’t for you, I don’t know what I would’ve done.”Â
“It was nothing,” Cassian said.Â
“It might’ve been nothing to you, but it meant everything to me.” Tessa’s voice trembled; she was still shaken. “If you hadn’t shown up, my mom might have—”Â
“She’s fine now,” Cassian interrupted gently. “Don’t overthink it.”Â
Tessa nodded, calming down a little. “I just hope the test results are okay.”Â
“I already talked to the hospital,” Cassian said. “If you need anything, tell Mr. Fuller. He’s the hospital director. He’ll take care of it.”Â
“ThankÂ
you, Cassian,” Tessa said again–this time softer, her eyes filled with something more than gratitude.Â
After leaving the hospital, Cassian called Aurelia on his way.Â
He had planned to ask how long she’d need to rest and when she’d be back at work.Â
Without her around, Miranda had been covering for her–but she was messy and careless, and he was getting irritated.Â
But to his surprise, Aurelia’s phone was turned off.Â
In the seven years they’d been together, that had never happened.Â

Cassian frowned, a strange unease stirring in his chest. Aurelia felt different lately–but he couldn’t quite sayÂ
how.Â

Aurelia returned to the office three days later.Â
The moment she sat down, Miranda rushed over, looking miserable. “Aurelia, you’re finally back. If you’d stayed away any longer, I might’ve forgotten how to smile.”Â
“What’s wrong?” Aurelia asked, smiling faintly.Â
After seven years of working herself to the bone, she finally felt free. For once, she had her own life, and it felt good. The old bitterness had faded away.Â
“What else could it be? You know how impossible Mr. Locke is to work for. He’s been driving me insane these past few days!” Miranda sighed dramatically, clearly traumatized.Â
“Is he really that bad?” Aurelia teased, trying to lighten her mood.Â
“Of course he is! You know how he is–unrealistic, demanding, impossible to please. Make one tiny mistake, and he’ll tear you apart. Aurelia, how did you survive all these years?” Miranda groaned.Â
Aurelia smiled. Miranda wasn’t exaggerating–Cassian’s reputation was well–earned. She had known that from her first day working for him.Â
She had endured it all out of love. She’d lost in the end, but at least now she could finally walk away.Â
“Isn’t there a shareholders‘ meeting today? You should prepare for it. It’s the biggest one this quarter,” Aurelia said. That was the main reason she’d chosen to come back today.Â
But Miranda shook her head. “It got postponed to next Monday.”Â
Aurelia froze mid–note. “Postponed?”Â
“Yeah. Ms. Rowe had some family stuff, so Mr. Locke moved it,” said Miranda.Â
Aurelia understood immediately. If it was for Tessa, then everything made sense.Â
It wasn’t the first time Cassian had bent the rules for her.Â
Aurelia didn’t feel anything about it anymore. She simply deleted the meeting notes.Â
After venting her frustrations, Miranda seemed to relax. She eyed Aurelia curiously. “By the way, you seem different lately.”Â
“Different how?” Aurelia asked.Â
“It’s just your whole vibe. You used to wear those stiff business suits and always had your hair pulled back perfectly–super serious, super tense. But now you look softer and prettier. And your lipstick–wow. It really suits you. You’re glowing.”Â

Aurelia smiled Dot look pretty?”Â
Miranda nodded enthusiastically “You do Really prettyÂ
Aurelia’s mood brightened–until her phone rangÂ
Cassian’s voice came through the speaker, deep and curt. “Ms. Corin, come to my office.”Â
Miranda visibly thinched at his tone. The trauma was real. “Good luck, she whispered, scurrying back to her desk.Â
Aurcha had been in an unusually good mood all morning. But the moment Cassian called, it all vanished like smokeÂ
