Aurelia waited nearly forty minutes before she finally got a ride. It was already past midnight when she arrived home. What a long day!

After a hot shower, Aurelia was too exhausted to dry her hair. She collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep right

away.

Fortunately, she could sleep in the next day, which happened to be Saturday.

The next morning, Aurelia got up and cooked soup for a visit to Ella in the hospital.

Then, she set off. At her doorway, she ran into the janitor who was murmuring, Who the hell smoked in the stairwell? So wicked.”

Ella was on the mend, and she looked much better than before.

After a bowl of soup prepared by Aurelia, Ella said that she wanted to go home because it was boring in the hospital.

Knowing that Ella was economical, Aurelia persuaded, It is useless to discuss with me. Ask the doctor. We will go home the moment the doctor gives his permission.”

Hearing this, Ella shut up. Clearly, she tried to seek Aurelia’s support after her failed negotiation with the doctor.

If you feel bored, I will take you out for a walk. Some fresh air will do you good. However, there is no sun today.”

It had rained the previous night, and the temperature had dropped.

Aurelia strolled with Ella through the park near the hospital. When they came across a young couple taking wedding photos, Ella couldn’t help but pause.

With her gaze fixed on the young couple, Ella began to imagine what her daughter would look like in a wedding dress. At the same time, Aurelia felt bad.

Aurelia, when will you and Cassian get married?Ella asked, expectation shining in her eyes.

Aurelia’s throat tightened. HeHe is quite busy. We don’t have any plans yet.”

Ella sighed. Cassian’s always busy. You two have been together for seven years. People say that lovers will drift apart slowly if they can’t get married in time. I am worried.”

Like a sharp needle, this speech pierced Aurelia right in the heart.

Aurelia’s sadness wasn’t about Cassian’s change of heart.

It saddened Aurelia to think that her sick mother was agitated by her relationship though she was already more than twenty years old.

Ella had brought Aurelia up all by herself. She had gotten pregnant before she married. As a result, she had been dismissed and ignored for years by her parents, who chose their family reputation over their kid.

Ella had a hemorrhage when she gave birth to Aurelia. Thanks to her attending doctor, she had a narrow escape from death, but she was completely weakened.

To raise Aurelia, she had toughed it out with her teeth gritted when she was young.

As she aged, her health worsened. She had suffered a serious illness when Aurelia was a junior high school student.

To let Aurelia focus on studying, Ella spent more than half a month in the hospital alone and kept the bad news to herself.

Aurelia had been kept in the dark till Ella was discharged from the hospital.

When Aurelia became a high school student, Ella became a frequenter of the hospital.

Ella begged her doctor to keep her real condition from Aurelia, and she told Aurelia that her illness was anemia caused by malnutrition. The truth was that she suffered from severe aplastic anemia.

Aurelia didn’t learn the truth till her last year of high school. The reason was that Ella had been rushed into the operating room.

To Aurelia, Ella was her whole world. She didn’t feel the power of Death till her whole world collapsed.

The doctor said that Ella needed an allogeneic bone marrow transplant as soon as possible.

Without hesitation, Aurelia began her search for suitable marrow, and she even tried to seek help from the Corin family behind Ella’s back.

To her disappointment, none of the Corin family was willing to do the match test for Ella.

Aurelia had knelt before the Corin’s house for 24 hours, but the door seemed tightly shut forever.

She remembered the weather from that day, and it had been the same as today, cloudy, chilly, and rainy. The piercing chill had spread through her veins and into her heart.

She would never forget the black umbrella above her head from that day. That was the very first time she met Cassian.

Back then, Cassian was like a beam of light piercing through the darkness that had swallowed her whole.

That was why she stubbornly kept chasing that light for the next seven years.

Unfortunately, the light that had once warmed her cast her back into the darkness.

*****

In the next few days, Aurelia punched out on time.

Chapter 41

Every day, she printed her resignation letter and placed it on Cassian’s desk before she went home.

Cassian may approve my resignation on the spur of the moment, Aurelia thought, even if she knew that this idea sounded a bit delusional.

Cassian had been away from his office for several days in a row, so Aurelia led a peaceful life. Well, there was. no sign of Tessa either.

Miranda gossiped with Aurelia by saying that Tessa had been absent from work for several days.

She comes and goes at will as if she were Mrs. Locke,” Miranda said.

Aurelia asked, Does Mr. Locke know about that?”

Of course, but he says nothing.Miranda pouted to show her dissatisfaction. This news failed to surprise Aurelia.

Cassian expected his men to abide by his rules, but Tessa was an exception. Cassian let Tessa have her way.

Aurelia wasn’t interested in the topic of Tessa. She asked Miranda, Are you saying that Mr. Locke came to work in the past few days?”

Yeah. More often than not, he showed up after you went home,” Miranda replied.

It is weird,Aurelia thought. However, Cassian, as the owner of Honoria Capital, has the freedom to set his own hours.’

Now, she was sure that Cassian had noticed her resignation letter.

On Thursday, Gideon invited Aurelia out for dinner. To avoid trouble, they would hash out the problems they might run into at the upcoming party.

Aurelia was ready to punch out as she had in the past few days.

To her surprise, Cassian showed up before she clocked out.

She ran into him when she was taking her resignation letter to his office. She calmly greeted, Mr. Locke.”

Cassian’s gaze lingered on Aurelia for a moment and then shifted to the letter in her hand.

The word resignationon the envelope was conspicuous. After a sneer, Cassian walked into his office.

When Aurelia was about to follow Cassian into his office, Gideon arrived.

Cassian,” Gideon called out.

Cassian stopped in his tracks and looked back at Gideon a bit coldly. What are you doing here?”

I’m here to pick up Aurelia,Gideon replied. He then gave Aurelia a warm grin. We’re grabbing dinner tonight. I was nearby for some errands, so I came to pick her up.”

Aurelia didn’t expect Gideon’s arrival or this awkward meeting.

Without that farce, she would explain to Cassian right away.

Before that farce, her relationship with him had been totally different. Now, she didn’t bother to explain.

Before Aurelia greeted Gideon, Cassian opened his mouth and said coldly, Ms. Corin, have you forgotten the rules here? How can you date during your working hours?”
