Even though Cassian had only made a brief appearance, the atmosphere in the private room had shifted noticeably.Â
Even the people who’d been giving Aurelia a hard time earlier now looked at her with a touch of sympathy in their eyes.Â
Aurelia quickly pulled herself together and kept presenting her project to the group.Â
Alcohol was impossible to avoid.Â
Since they couldn’t make trouble for her openly, they found every indirect way possible to target her.Â
Even one glass meant they’d make her down three.Â
No matter how well Aurelia could hold her alcohol, there was just no way she could drink the whole table under.Â
Midway through, she had to duck into the restroom and throw up until there was nothing left in her stomach.Â
Totally spent, she collapsed onto the toilet seat, rummaged through her bag, and pulled out the yogurt she’d packed just in case, hoping it would settle her stomach.Â
She’d learned all these moves from years spent surviving business socials.Â
The funny thing was, Cassian was the one who had taught her these tricks.Â
Back then, she’d drink for him, and if she got too sick and threw up, he’d always help her recover–just so she could keep drinking for him.Â
Sometimes, Aurelia really couldn’t hold out, and she’d pass out right on the restroom floor.Â
And Cassian would always come and pick her up when she was limp, then carry her home himself.Â
This was how she managed to stick it out all these years.Â
So she knew her own limits and how much she could drink.Â
She could tell when she was close to her threshold and needed to find a way to slip out before it got out of hand.Â
Feeling a bit better, Aurelia stepped out of the restroom stall–only to bump into a familiar face.Â
It was Lyra, Nolan Flynn’s secretary from Eastview Capital.Â
They’d met before at Honoria Capital’s victory party, when Cassian had told her to stick with Nolan and drink alongside him.Â
“Ms. Corin, you’re here too? I totally missed you earlier,” Lyra exclaimed, her surprise obvious.Â

Aurelia paused, keeping her cool as she asked, “Is Mr. Flynn here too?”Â
“Yeah, Mr. Locke invited him here to talk about the project.” Lyra replied.Â

“So how’s it going?” Aurelia asked, steadying herself as she fixed her smudged makeup in the mirror.Â
Lyra chatted while washing her hands. “Honestly, it’s all been pretty smooth. But Ms. Rowe doesn’t seem to be very good at drinking. She only drank two glasses and got drunk. Mr. Locke actually looked worried and said he’d take her home first before heading back.”Â
‘So, he really… cares enough. Aurelia thought to herself.Â
He’d rather go out of his way, making the trip back and forth, just to make sure the one he cared about got home safe.Â
Aurelia found herself zoning out for a moment.Â
Lyra leaned over, lowering her voice in a curious whisper. “Ms. Corin, do you think Mr. Locke’s into Ms. Rowe? There’s just something going on between them.”Â
“Why do you think so?” Aurelia asked, snapping back to reality. She realized her lipstick had worn off and pulled out her tube to touch it up.Â
“The project they’re talking about is still just getting started, but Mr. Locke showed up himself and brought Ms. Rowe over to see Mr. Flynn. It’s just not what I’d expect from him, honestly,” Lyra said.Â
Lyra might still be surprised by all this, but Aurelia had seen it all before.Â
After all, Cassian had always favored Tessa; this wasn’t the first time.Â
He even tagged along with her before, just to help pitch some tiny investment project.Â
After leaving the restroom, Aurelia went with Lyra to the private room to greet Nolan.Â
In business, one never let an opportunity slip by.Â
Nolan remembered Aurelia and even joked that she looked even better tonight than she did at the victory party.Â
It seemed that not wearing a formal dress that day wasn’t all bad.Â
At least it left a lasting impression on Nolan.Â
Nolan was from Northvale, and he could really drink.Â
Aurelia, picking up on his preferences, offered him a toast.Â
He just waved his hand, saying, “Your stomach isn’t great–better skip the alcohol. Tea’s fine.”Â
Tea made it easier to talk business.Â

Besides, she had already drunk quite a bit, so drinking more would definitely make her uncomfortableÂ
Aurelia put on a professional attitude and started discussing her project with Nolan.Â
When he learned it was an Al project, Nolan looked doubtful. “You mean the Al project Ms. Rowe mentioned earlier? She just talked to me about it, but honestly, I didn’t think much of it.”Â
Now Aurelia realized that the reason Cassian had brought Tessa here was to help her land a deal for her AI project.Â
He really was going the extra mile, pulling strings and setting up connections for her everywhere.Â
Aurelia took out the business plan she always kept on hand and showed it to Nolan, answering his questions along the way.Â
No matter what kind of question Nolan always asked, Aurelia had a quick, confident answer ready.Â
Nolan looked at Aurelia with a new level of appreciation in his eyes.Â
By the time Cassian returned, Aurelia was just about finished chatting with Nolan.Â
Since she’d been working those connections because of him, Aurelia greeted Cassian with a polite hello.Â
He just replied casually, barely glancing her way.Â
Then he turned to Nolan and asked, “What were you talking about?”Â
Nolan started to explain.Â
But before he could finish, Cassian’s phone kept buzzing. Someone was clearly spamming his messages.Â
“Go ahead, keep chatting. I need to answer this,” Cassian said, pulling out his phone.Â
He took a seat off to the side, eyes glued to his screen, completely focused on replying.Â
Aurelia glanced over and spotted a familiar avatar on his display.Â
It was Tessa.Â
‘Figures why he’s putting in so much effort for her,’ Aurelia mused.Â
He didn’t even mind leaving Nolan waiting just to reply to Tessa’s message.Â
Honestly, that didn’t bother Aurelia one bit.Â
She was actually glad Cassian was so distracted. It meant more time for her to pitch her ideas to Nolan.Â
And sure enough, things turned out just as Aurelia had hoped.Â
Cassian was glued to his phone, lost in conversation, and he barely uttered a word to anyone all night.Â

From time to time, a gentle, almost fond smile played on his lips, equal parts soft and indulgent.Â
Not once in seven years had Aurelia ever seen him like this.Â

So even a guy as serious as Cassian, always drawing a hard line between work and life, had this patient side toÂ
him.Â
The same man who used to ignore her texts for days could now just tune out an important meeting, all to chat with his dream girl–no matter where or when.Â
But from start to finish, Aurelia was never the lucky one–he just never cared for her the way he did for others.Â
It was a tiny, momentary flicker–Aurelia felt her heart twist, but just for a second.Â
She could only sigh for her old self, the girl who’d shrunk herself to nothing for love, always quiet and invisible, clinging to Cassian’s shadow.Â
But it was gone as quickly as it came. She shrugged it off, barely bothered by it now.Â
She didn’t love Cassian anymore. When she saw him showing interest in someone else, it barely mattered to her–she simply didn’t care.Â
She buried herself in her work, focusing on her project.Â
The chat was easygoing, and Folan showed great interest in her project.Â
For Aurelia, who’d been stuck at rock bottom for ages, it felt like she finally glimpsed a sliver of hope.Â
When things were wrapping up, Cassian finally put his phone away and stood up to say goodbye to Nolan.Â
As soon as Nolan was gone, Aurelia let her smile fade and got ready to slip out herself.Â
But Cassian stopped her and asked, “Aurelia, where did you used to order my birthday cakes?”Â
Aurelia frowned, not sure why he’d suddenly bring that up.Â
“Tessa wants some cake. I don’t usually eat sweets, so I’m kind of clueless about what’s good. I remember the cakes you used to buy were pretty good, so I want to get her something like that,” Cassian explained.Â
‘So it’s for his precious Tessa, Aurelia thought, a tiny hint of irony flickering across her mind.Â
Aurelia smiled, almost playfully. “You can give up, Mr. Locke—it’s not something you can just buy.”Â
Cassian’s brow furrowed, his tone flat, tinged with impatience. “What do you mean, I can’t buy it?”Â
‘Because… I made those myself, Aurelia sneered, the secret lingering quietly inside.Â
She knew he wasn’t into sweets, so she’d squeezed time out of her busy life to pick up baking from a pastry chef, just to make those cakes for him.Â

She tirelessly adjusted the flavors again and again until she finally made a cake that Cassian liked.Â
But she’d never breathed a word of it to him.Â
So Cassian assumed she just grabbed them from some bakery around the corner.Â
And now, she didn’t plan on ever telling him.Â
It just didn’t matter anymore.Â
“Are you seriously not getting it, Mr. Locke? I meant it literally. You can’t just buy those cakes now.”Â
Aurelia spoke calmly, but her face was colder than the midnight air outside.Â
