Cassian stared at her for a moment, his voice ice–cold. “I can’t buy it, or you just won’t tell me? Aurelia, you’re leeching off my connections but still pulling this attitude? Is this really how you handle things?”

Aurelia had never realized that Cassian liked lecturing people so much.

He really acted like a father.

She really didn’t know how she had put up with it before.

There was no way she was dealing with his nonsense now.

“How I handle things has nothing to do with you, Mr. Locke,” she shot back.

Cassian’s eyes grew even colder, his gaze narrowing as his anger simmered. “You think saying it doesn’t matter actually makes it true? Who the hell gave you the nerve to talk to me like that?”

“Gideon?” he sneered.

“Or maybe it’s Tyson?”

With every name he spat out, he took another step closer, closing the distance between them.

With every step, that familiar–yet–strange aura of Cassian closed in around her.

And mixed in with it was a faint hint of women’s perfume hanging in the air.

It was a scent she’d picked up from Tessa before.

She turned her face away and stepped back, widening the distance until she couldn’t catch the scent anymore.

Her eyes were even colder than before as she looked at him. “Anyway, as long as it’s not something you gave me, that’s all that matters.”

Cassian narrowed his eyes slightly, his tone dripping with sarcasm, “Why didn’t I ever see you being this tough before?”

Aurelia shot back, her tone as flat as ever. “Maybe you just never bothered to know the real me, Mr. Locke.”

Her voice and expression were both eerily calm, not a hint of emotion flickering across her face.

It hadn’t even been that long since she left Honoria Capital, and already she could stay so composed.

Their argument didn’t bother Aurelia at all.

She had a meeting with Nolan the next day to discuss the project in detail.

As for whether Cassian managed to get Tessa her favorite cake, Aurelia never found out.

The next day, her meeting with Nolan went smoothly, but he had a condition.

He wanted Aurelia’s team to build a prototype first, even if it was just a basic version. He wanted to see and test it before deciding whether to invest, and how much.

Aurelia had full faith in Tyson’s abilities and was sure Nolan would be impressed.

The only catch was whether she actually had enough funding to cover the costs for Tyson to build that first

prototype.

Before Aurelia could start worrying her head off about the funding, Tyson called to tell her someone had shown up at the studio looking for her.

Aurelia thought it was strange. She wracked her brain, but couldn’t figure out who in the world would come looking for her at the studio.

When she rushed over, half anxious and half curious, she was surprised to find that the visitor was Jessica.

“Surprised?” Jessica exclaimed, sweeping Aurelia up in a warm hug.

Aurelia nodded, a little stunned. “Yeah, I’m surprised. How did you find this place?”

“I was on a business trip abroad last week, but I kept thinking about the project you mentioned. My return flight had a layover in Ashmont, so I thought I’d stop by and take a look.”

Once Jessica settled in, she looked at Aurelia, concern etched on her face. “So? How’s it going? Still surviving out here?”

Aurelia gave a self–deprecating shrug. “You’ve run the startup challenges too, Jessica. You know none of this ever goes easy.”

Jessica reached out and squeezed her hand, encouraging, “Just don’t let it get you down. Ride out the rough patches–there’s always a rainbow waiting after the storm.”

Sure, these were just words meant to comfort, but Aurelia honestly felt grateful for Jessica’s warmth.

She could sense the real care, and that meant something to her.

“Actually, I’ve got another reason for coming by,” Jessica said, pulling a check out of her bag and placing it right in front of Aurelia.

“I told you I’d invest in your project, and even though you never came asking, I’m someone who sticks to my word. This money? It’s me keeping my promise.”

The amount was no joke.

Three million dollars.

Jessica smiled, “I’m just an investor–no meddling, no decision–making. If the project succeeds, just give me my share of the profits. If it fails, it’s just my loss. Seriously, don’t stress about it.”

This was the maximum freedom an investor could offer.

It was also a sign of Jessica’s sincerity.

“Jessica, I really appreciate your trust. But I have to be honest–this project is still just starting out. If you join now, you have to be ready to stay with us for the long journey of building this business.”

“I know,” Jessica replied, unwavering. “Aurelia, you’re going to make it.”

Jessica’s investment was a godsend, arriving just when Aurelia needed it most and saving her from a financial disaster.

All that was left now was for Tyson to work his magic and get that first prototype built.

To take some of the pressure off Tyson, Aurelia started hiring people for the studio herself.

She never realized how crazy expensive senior engineers were until she actually started the search.

With every contract signed, Aurelia felt her heart bleeding.

Calling it “money flowing like water” wasn’t an exaggeration at all.

Jessica’s investment ran dry in no time.

But she didn’t breathe a word of it to Tyson–for fear of affecting him. She just took it all on herself.

Whenever Mila had some free time, she’d come by the studio to lend a hand–bringing coffee, making copies, running errands, or just tidying up the place.

But she was still a student, and Aurelia worried this would interfere with her studies. She told her not to come, saying she was already hiring someone to take over all the odd jobs.

Mila didn’t believe her for a second. She knew full well Aurelia had been handling everything herself up until

now.

She just didn’t want Aurelia exhausting herself—that’s why she kept showing up to help out.

It wasn’t until Aurelia showed her the recruitment notice that Mila finally believed her.

Aurelia originally planned to take down the recruitment notice right after getting Mila off her back.

But to her surprise, someone actually showed up to apply that very afternoon.

And it was someone she knew.

“Aurelia, I missed you so much!”

When Miranda arrived, she gave Aurelia a big, warm hug that Aurelia didn’t quite know how to handle it.

After all, those who came here were either real–world friends or applicants.

You must be joking Aurelia stared at her, genuinely taken aback.

After all everyone knew landing a job at Honoria Capital was like hitting the jackpot–career security for life.

“Why would I make that up? I’m seriously here to apply! I told you before, but you just brushed me off and broke my heart,” Miranda protested.

Aurelia had totally assumed she was just joking around, so she’d never taken it seriously.

There was absolutely no doubt about Miranda’s skills–Aurelia had mentored her herself back when she was interning at Honoria Capital, so she knew firsthand what she could do.

There was no need for an interview. But before making anything official. Aurelia still had to ask why she’d quit Honoria Capital.

Miranda pouted dramatically, “Because Mr. Locke’s totally blinded by love!”*

Aurelia hadn’t heard that name for half a month, so suddenly hearing it felt quite unfamiliar.

She asked what was going on, and only then did Miranda explain the reason.

Ever since Aurelia left, the top secretary spot at Honoria Capital had been empty.

Not long ago, Tessa had her cousin placed in the secretary department and had Miranda look after her.
