Jason POV

Mom’s face went completely white. Dad’s expression turned thunderous.

And Brittany…

Brittany looked like someone had just told her the world was ending.

Childbirth? Her voice came out as barely a whisper.

Marcus nodded grimly. The timing aligns perfectly with when she left the pack, Alpha. Right down to the week.

The implications crashed over me in waves.

Laila was pregnant with my child when she ran away.

My mind was complete chaos, but I forced myself to think rationally.

If she’d been pregnant that day I brought Brittany back…

She was carrying my child, and I told her I was just curious what it would feel like to sleep with a human.

The guilt felt like it was going to crush me.

No wonder she ran away from me.

Dad’s voice cut through the memory like a whip. How could this even happen, Jason?”

His tone was accusatory, but underneath I could hear the fear. The political calculation was already spinning in his mind.

Under the pack law, children born outside marked mating would be considered illegitimate. The child was doomed to be a bastard with no claim to pack protection.

Vulnerable in ways that made my chest tight with protective rage.

If this gets out,Father continued, his voice deadly quiet, if other packs discover you once had a bastard child wandering aroundEven if Laila and the child are both dead”

I understand the implications,I said harshly. It could challenge my right to rule.”

Rival packs would smell weakness and circle like vultures.

The child would become a target. A weapon to be used against me.

That’s when the crash of breaking glass shattered the moment completely.

Every head at our table snapped toward the sound. Pack instincts kicked in sharp and immediate.

We’d been discussing sensitive information. Pack secrets that could destroy us if they fell into the wrong hands.

A woman crouched beside a nearby table, hands shaking violently as she tried to collect shards of broken

ceramic from the floor.

The same woman who’d been watching us all evening. The one who’d reacted so strangely when I’d called her

Laila.

Her shoulders were rigid with tension, her movements frantic and desperate.

Something about her posture triggered every alarm bell in my head.

Like prey trying to escape a predator, but trapped with nowhere to run.

Her friend appeared beside her, tugging at her arm with urgent insistence. We should go,the friend said.Now. We need to leave now.”

They were both backing toward the exit, moving like they couldn’t get out fast enough.

Like their lives depended on escape.

But it was too late.

I was already on my feet, moving toward her with the focused intensity of a hunter who’d finally spotted his

prey.

Excuse me,I said, my voice carrying just enough Alpha command to make her freeze completely.

She looked up at me with wide brown eyes that seemed far too familiar.

Have we met before? Why do I feel like you know me?I asked, my voice sharp with suspicion and something else I didn’t want to name.

Laila POV

Have we met before? Why do I feel like you know me?”

I felt myself tense up at Jason’s question. His green eyes searched my face with an intensity that made my

stomach clench.

I forced myself to stay calm. To breathe normally even though my heart was racing like a trapped bird.

We crossed paths at the hospital earlier,I said smoothly. You were probably just remembering that.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie. We had seen each other at the hospital. Just not for the first time.

Jason studied me for another long moment. I could practically see him trying to place me. Trying to figure out why this stranger felt so familiar.

Finally, he seemed to accept my explanation. The suspicious tension in his shoulders eased slightly.

I suppose hospitals make everyone look familiar,he said. But there was still doubt threading through his voice.

Riley appeared at my elbow like a guardian angel. Vanessa, we should really get back to Ava.”

I nodded quickly. Yes, you’re right.”

As we started to leave, I caught fragments of Jason’s family’s conversation resuming behind us. But I didn’t hear Jason’s response to the bastardchild.

And I didn’t need to hear it.

I could see it in his face. The way he’d gone pale when Marcus mentioned the baby.

Jason didn’t want anything to do with me or our daughter.

Just like I’d always known he wouldn’t.

I didn’t want Jason to involve in my life with Ava too.

Once we were safely in Riley’s car, the facade I’d been maintaining crumbled like wet paper.

He looked horrified,I whispered, staring at my hands. When Marcus said I’d been pregnant, Jason looked like it was the worst news he’d ever received.”

You don’t know that,Riley said. But her voice lacked conviction.

I do know that. I’ve known it for six years.”

The truth was I didn’t plan to hide Ava entirely from Jason before I actually gave birth to Ava.

The memories I’d tried so hard to bury came flooding back. Those first terrible months after I’d left the pack. When I’d known nothing about the human world and had to take whatever work I could find.

I’d been so naive. Thought I could figure it out, find some simple job and build a life for my baby. Instead, I’d ended up cleaning office buildings at night. Working in a diner during the day. Trying to scrape together enough money for prenatal care.

I’d been working a double shift at the diner when it happened. A customer had been harassing me all evening. Getting more aggressive as the night wore on. He’d cornered me in the back hallway. His hands wandering where they shouldn’t.

When I’d tried to push him away, he’d shoved me hard against the wall.

The pain started immediately. Sharp, stabbing contractions that doubled me over in that dirty hallway.

I’d known I was in labor. Too early, too dangerous, but unmistakably labor.

In my panic, my phone had found Jason’s number almost without conscious thought. Even after everything that had happened, some part of me still reached for him in crisis.

But it was Brittany who’d answered.

Hello? Her voice had been sickeningly sweet. Like honey over broken glass.

I needI need to speak to Jason,I’d gasped between contractions.

Oh, I’m sorry, who is this? Jason’s a little busy right now.”

I could hear her moving away from Jason. Could picture her dismissing me before I’d even had a chance to explain.

Please, just tell him it’s Laila. It’s an emergency.”

There’d been a pause. Then Brittany’s laugh, Cold and victorious.

Laila? Oh, honey, Jason doesn’t want to hear from humans like you. He’s with his real mate now.”

Each word had been a knife between my ribs.

I’d heard Jason’s voice in the background. Distant and uninterested.

Who is it, Britt?”

Nobody important,” she’d replied. I’d heard Jason’s noncommittal grunt.

Nobody important.

Those words had echoed in my head as I’d delivered my daughter alone.

Ava had come into the world screaming and perfect. I’d held her against my chest and promised her we’d never need anyone else.

Especially not the man who’d made it clear we were nobody important.
