I felt all of it boiling back up. The comments, the sneers, the little daggers she threw whenever she could.

Not today.

I don’t work in food service,I said, calm and even, though my heart was hammering.

Her eyebrows shot up. Excuse me?”

You heard me. Get your own coffee.”

The air in that elevator dropped about twenty degrees. Jason was watching now, sharp, like he knew something was about to explode.

Everyone in this building serves their betters,Brittany said, her voice going icecold. And I’m definitely your better.”

Something inside me cracked right down the middle.

I looked down at the steaming cup of coffee in my hand. Still hot. Still full. Of course,I said sweetly. Let me help you with that.”

I stepped forward like I was going to hand Brittany my coffee. She reached for it eagerly, that smug smile still plastered on her face. And then I accidentallytilted my hand. The scalding liquid splashed across her pristine white skirt in a dark, spreading stain. Brittany screamed. Actually screamed. Like I’d set her on fire instead of just spilling coffee.

She jumped backward, the cup clattering to the elevator floor. You stupid little bitch!she shrieked, her voice climbing higher with each word. I’m going to demand that Vanessa fire your sorry ass!”

I watched her panic with cold satisfaction. Six years of buried rage finally getting a little payback.

Jason stepped forward, but not to help me. His voice came out flat, dismissive. You clearly lack professionalism, he said to me, like I was some incompetent employee. Go find Vanessa and tell her we need to speak with her.

The casual cruelty in his tone cut deeper than Brittany’s shrieking. This was the real Jason. The one who’d always seen me as beneath him.

What do you even want with Vanessa?I shot back, my voice sharp with six years of suppressed anger. She’s already clearly refused to work with you.”

Brittany was still dabbing at her ruined skirt, her face twisted with fury. She thinks she’s so high and mighty, she snarled. Vanessa’s being ungrateful. It should be an honor to work with us. This time, we’re going to get to the bottom of why she refused.”

I scoffed. Maybe she thinks your pack hascharacter problems. Starting with your Alpha.”

Brittany’s face went through a whole range of expressions, most notably shock, before settling on fury.

How dare you speak to us like that? Do you know who I am? Who he is?”

I know exactly who you are, Brittany. Her name tasted like poison on my tongue. Question is, do you know

who I am?”

Jason stepped forward slightly. His Alpha instincts picking up on the dangerous tension crackling between us.

Ladies,he said carefully, stop it now-”

Stay out of this,I snapped, not taking my eyes off Brittany. Six years of buried anger was bubbling up inside me. Six years of staying silent, playing nice, pretending none of it mattered.

Brittany’s eyes narrowed to slits. You’re just some nobody working in this building. Probably making minimum wage while dreaming about being important.”

I laughed. Couldn’t help it. The sound was sharp in that small space.

Minimum wage? That’s rich, coming from someone who’s never worked a day in her life.”

I don’t have to work,Brittany shot back. I’m going to be Luna of one of the most powerful packs in the country.”

Are you though?I tilted my head, studying her like she was a particularly interesting bug. Because from what I hear, Jason’s been avoiding that particular commitment for years.”

Jason’s face went thunderous. And that’s when the doors opened again.

My assistant, Jacob, was about to hurry inside, clearly in a rush, his phone pressed to his ear. He froze the second he saw me, and the name dropped out of his mouth like a bomb:

Vanessa?”
