A mutant zombie core was worth a hundred regular zombie cores of the same level. It was incrediblyÂ
valuableÂ
It was lucky to find even one among ten thousand regular zombies. But Chloe had just stumbled upon one.Â
The semi–translucent core in her hand was slowly absorbed. Once its energy was gone, it turned gray and crumbled to dust with the slightest touch.Â
With her powers fully restored, Chloe finally stood up and started scavenging for supplies.Â
In her previous life, Hevenscale would turn into a ghost town in six months. A year later, it would be swallowed by the sea and vanish forever.Â
Chloe moved through the deserted first floor of a building, holding an axe in one hand and using a frying pan as a shield in the other.Â
She grabbed all the emeralds from the display cases and shoved them into her spiritual space, barely glancing at the luxury handbags or the piles of gold and silver jewelry.Â
She made her way up to the second floor, which was untouched and pristine. With the zombies swarming outside, it was clear no humans had dared to come inside.Â
Chloe walked on with the shield in hand, sweeping entire shelves into her spiritual space as she went.Â
It saved too much trouble for her this way, and it kept her line of sight wide open, perfect for spotting danger before it got too close.Â
The second floor was basically a massive supermarket. As soon as she stepped in, she saw stacks of neatly organized boxes. There was milk, hardtack, bread, cherries, cookies, and so on. She reached out and swept entire shelves into her spiritual space.Â
Further on, she cleared out all the canned peaches, soda, and milk with the racks at a time. When she reached the baby formula section, she grabbed every last can into her spiritual space.Â
After the apocalypse, babies had little chance of surviving, mainly because there was no formula, and most women couldn’t breastfeed. There was also a ton of booze and cigarettes. Guys would kill for those, and they’d be worth a fortune later on.Â
Chloe moved through the place like a swarm of locusts, leaving nothing behind. The apocalypse was brutal, and things only got harder. No one ever had too many supplies.Â
Then Chloe saw frozen food, chocolate, cheese, fruits, and vegetables, coats, down jackets, and thermal gear. She moved fast, sweeping entire shelves straight into her spiritual space.Â
In less than half an hour, the second floor was stripped bare. Then she headed straight to the third floor, where she cleared out every piece of clothing.Â
The fourth floor had been a food court, but with the holidays, every shop was locked. Chloe pulled out her spiked mace and smashed every plass door, cleming out all the supplies inside before dusting off her handsÂ

As she scavenged and hacked her way through zombies, Chloe was on a whole new level now. She had this aura about her, like she was a queen, keeping everyone at a distance.Â
Every ten minutes, she smeared fresh zombie blood on herself. Even when she ran into first–level zombies, she could take them out instantly, without breaking a sweat.Â
She cleared every supermarket, wholesale store, snack joint, and restaurant she passed by. Nothing was left behind.Â
But in the end, she left a way out for the other survivors, taking only a third of the food on purpose. She couldn’t be completely heartless.Â
On the fourth day of the apocalypse, Chloe finally reached the entrance of Greengrove Estates. As soon as she stepped inside, a pack of first–level zombies lunged at her, attacking with mindless fury.Â
Just like first–level zombies, powered humans also had cores. It worked both ways. If a zombie managed to devour a powered human, it could evolve and gain massive power.Â
The difference was that zombie cores were in their brains, while those of powered humans were near their hearts.Â
Six first–level zombies locked onto Chloe immediately. Their faces were ashen. Their eyes rolled back, and their mouths were wide open, revealing black, triangular teeth that made people’s skin crawl.Â
A foul stench hit Chloe as one first–level zombie collided with the frying pan shield in her hand, knocking her back and numbing her left hand. She swung her axe down hard, taking the zombie down in one blow.Â
At the same time, she activated her wind power and leaped backward. A spear appeared in her hand, and she drove it through the second zombie’s neck.Â
She stabbed repeatedly, splattering thick, black blood everywhere. The smell was overpowering, almost making her head spin. Without time to flinch, she saw four more zombies charge at her all at once.Â
Chloe’s gaze hardened as she made up her mind to take them all down. With a shield in one hand and an axe in the other, she fought with ruthless precision, slicing through the zombies effortlessly, their heads dropping one after another.Â
Her body and face were covered in zombie blood, and that made the low–level zombies keep their distance, thinking she was one of them. It gave Chloe a much–needed moment to breathe.Â
Zombies swarmed around her like a dark tide. If they all attacked at once, she’d be torn apart. Thankfully, there were only six first–level zombies left. Her powers were drained, and she was completely exhausted. Two zombies were still eyeing her.Â
Chloe dropped her battered axe, reached into her backpack, and pulled out a crossbow from her spiritual space.Â

Chapter 16Â
Upstairs, a woman called out, “Honey, come quickly! Look at what’s happening down there.”Â

“What’s going on?” a gruff man asked, his voice filled with confusion. When he saw what was happening, it would haunt him for the rest of his life.Â
Down below, there was a girl with a frying pan in one hand and an axe in the other. But calling her a girl didn’t seem right anymore.Â
She was drenched in blood, moving at a brutal speed, like a reaper unleashed from hell. Every strike was precise, and zombies fell before they had a chance to fight back.Â
Even the burly man couldn’t help but shudder. He pressed his lips tightly and then said in a deep voice, “She’s running on fumes. She won’t survive this.”Â
Before he could say more, he saw the girl below toss her axe aside, and as if by magic, she pulled a crossbow from her backpack.Â
Suddenly, Chloe looked up at him and flashed a chilling grin, her sharp white teeth gleaming. Her eyes were cold and sinister, sending shivers down his spine.Â
“Holly shit. Close the curtains!” the man yelled.Â
“What’s wrong, honey?” the woman asked.Â
“Just do it,” he snapped.Â
Everyone on the lower floors had seen the zombie fight and scrambled to close their curtains at the same time. Honestly, being noticed by Chloe was more terrifying than facing a horde of zombies.Â
Finally, Chloe finished off the last two first–level zombies with perfect shots. Her legs were shaking, but she managed to pry out their cores and stagger into the building, barely able to swipe her card.Â
Luckily, the hallway was clear of zombies, and with the national power grid still working for at least six more months, the elevator was functioning.Â
Chloe, barely able to move, dragged herself into the elevator and rode it up to the eighteenth floor.Â
When she reached her door, the package from the delivery guy was gone, and the heavy iron door was covered in deep knife marks.Â
Chloe felt eyes on her through the peepholes of Unit 1801 and Unit 1802. She slung the crossbow over her shoulder, calmly unlocked the door, and walked right in.Â
