Chloe was struggling to deal with all the zombies on her own, but the blood she’d smeared on herself kept her safe enough for now.

However, with the whole crowd following her, the scent of humans got stronger, drawing in zombies in endless waves. There was no end to them.

II remember now. She’s the girl who killed all those zombies in our neighborhood a few days ago, someone stuttered.

As the memory flashed in their minds, several people suddenly realized they recognized her, the same girl from a few days ago under the apartment windows. The shock hit them hard.

A few people in the crowd had been under those windows back then. They’d seen that figure break through a horde of zombies, even though her face was blurry. The image was burned into their minds.

As the memory slowly clicked with the girl in front of them, hope for survival sparked in their hearts. They made up their minds that they were sticking with her, no matter what.

Shawn, Mandy, and the others exchanged looks, gathering their courage as they followed close behind her.

Chloe’s hearing was sharp as always, so she caught every word the people behind her were saying. She couldn’t help but smirk sarcastically.

She thought, Who has time for the gossip now? If they’ve got that much energy to waste, they’d be better off using it to kill more zombies.’

She glanced over her shoulder and almost exploded. It wasn’t just the women and kids. Even the tough guys were hiding behind her, letting her do all the work while they tagged along. Unbelievable. Some people have no shame, she thought.

Chloe made sure to take out the lowlevel zombies first, cutting through them with ease. The zombie blood covering her kept the weaker ones from noticing she was human. They didn’t even try to attack her.

Screams and curses broke out behind her.

Why are you heading for the garage? Are you planning to ditch us and drive off?someone shouted, suspicious.

However, Chloe didn’t respond.

Someone grabbed Chloe’s arm and snapped, No way! We don’t even have the car keys. If you leave, what are we supposed to do?”

Hey! Where are you going? Why aren’t we leaving the neighborhood? I’m talking to you. Are you out of your mind?another person yelled.

None of us has car keys. Don’t even think about going to the garage!someone else shouted.

Everyone shared the same fear. They were terrified Chloe might have à car and ditch them

The people who made it out were the strongest in their families, and they all had people depending on them. They couldn’t just leave their homes behind.

But now there was no turning back. Their escape was blocked, and they were stuck. All their frustration was dumped on Chloe.

Chloe swung her blade, lopping off the head of another firstlevel zombie in one smooth motion. She snatched the zombie core without missing a beat and immediately set her sights on the next one.

Take them somewhere? Since when did I say I was their babysitter?Chloe scoffed inwardly. If they stay out of my way, fine. But if they cause me trouble, I won’t hesitate to take them down myself.

With her shield in her left hand and a heavy machete in her right, Chloe took down two firstlevel zombies in quick succession. Before the next one could get close, she’d already dug out the zombie core from its skull.

Damn, these zombies are evolving too fast, Chloe thought. A few days ago, there were only a handful of them in the neighborhood. Now, there are swarms. If they keep eating each other, secondlevel zombies will start showing up any day.

The crowd behind her, who had been panicking at first, eventually fell silent. They followed Chloe’s lead, smearing themselves with zombie blood, and just like that, the firstlevel zombies ignored them.

People in the nearby buildings watched the chaos unfold from their windows. Some snickered, and some smirked, enjoying the show, while others waved desperately for help.

Despite the zombie swarms, people made it to the underground garage in one piece.

Chloe scanned the area with sharp eyes. She spotted a zombie trapped inside a nearby car. The owner was still dressed in a suit, and the keys were untouched in the ignition.

She popped the door open, and before the zombie in the suit could even move, Chloe took its head off with one swing. She tossed the body out, slid into the seat, and slammed the door shut in one smooth motion.

As soon as the door was shut, the crowd rushed over, banging frantically on the car.

Please, let us in!they begged.

Chloe saw panic in their eyes as the zombies closed in behind them. She liked to think she was cold and ruthless, but she couldn’t help but crack the window and shout, Find a car with the keys still in it!”

Her shout was a wakeup call. Everyone scrambled to find a car. Some searched for any car with keys, and others frantically looked for their own.

The fast ones got inside cars, while the slower ones were overrun by the zombies.

By the time they made it into the cars, not a single zombie was left in the neighborhood. Every last one of them flooded into the underground garage.

Man, it’s way too quiet around here,” one of the base team guys muttered.

The team cruised down the empty streets, not a single zombie in sight. The place was completely deserted, and it was starting to creep them out.

Maybe we should just head back and report what we’ve seen. This place is freaking me out, another guy said quietly.

One team member scoffed, rolling his eyes. When the zombies were everywhere, you weren’t this cautious. Now that they’re gone, shouldn’t you be relieved?”

Tony Duncan slapped his buddy on the back. You don’t get it. This is the apocalypse. Zombies are supposed to be everywhere. If they’re all gone, that’s when you need to start worrying. Who knows what else is out there, waiting for us?”

Everyone agreed, so they decided to skip the neighborhoods and hit up the supermarket for supplies before heading back to report. After all, chances to get out like this were rare.

Just then, an SUV sped past them so fast that by the time they realized what had happened, all that was left was the shadow of it disappearing down the road. In its wake, a pile of crushed zombies was scattered across the street.

That was awesome!one guy shouted, his eyes wide with excitement. Tony, think you could drift like that?”

Tony, I saw it, too. There was a real knockout in that car. Haven’t seen a girl like that in forever, another guy

chimed in.

Everyone laughed, all thinking the same thing.

Quickly, they sped up and honked behind Chloe like crazy.

Damn it!Chloe growled, yanking the wheel and pulling off a wild drift, knocking the zombies that had climbed onto the roof off the car.

What do you want?Chloe snapped, rolling down her window and shouting at the car behind her.

Hey, lady, we’re starving. Haven’t eaten in days. Can you help us out with some food?Tony yelled.

I don’t have any!Chloe slammed her foot on the gas and took off. But the car behind her wouldn’t back off. They stayed right on her tail and quickly pulled up alongside her again.

Hey, we saw your backpack. Just hand over some food. What’s the big deal? Think of it as a loan. We’ll pay you back when we find more,Tony demanded.

They saw her backpack and figured she was from the neighborhood.

But Chloe didn’t even acknowledge them. She slammed the pedal to the floor, heading straight for the university town.

She whipped around a corner. With no chance of hitting the brakes and going full speed at 110 mph, she crashed straight into a parked semi.

The impact was huge. Chloe instantly slipped into her spiritual space as the car exploded in a burst of fire,
