Chapter 27Â
The two security guards dragged their half–frozen, battered legs forward, forcing themselves to take one agonizing step after another toward the students.Â
Meanwhile, all the zombies froze in place, their hungry eyes locked on Hevenseale University. They shoved and stumbled over each other, getting closer with every second.Â
“Shit!” Jason yelled. He and a few of his guys took off running.Â
There was no way they were going back to the cafeteria. It was a bloodbath. The only choice now was to head for the dorm building. As they ran, Jason kept shouting over his shoulder, “You’d better pray I never see you again, you bitch!”Â
Chloe grabbed Emily’s hand, and together, they sprinted toward the girls‘ dorm, using the faint light to guide them.Â
The rest of the survivors were in chaos. Some ran back to the cafeteria. Others chased after Jason, screaming, while a few smarter girls made a beeline for the upper floors of the dorm.Â
The girls‘ dorm had twelve floors, and they ran all the way up to the very top without stopping.Â
Emily was so out of breath that her weak body almost collapsed right then and there.Â
Chloe couldn’t help but wonder if Emily was really the same spirit–powered big shot she’d known in her previous life.Â
“Chloe, let’s head for that room,” Emily said, pointing. She pulled out a key and unlocked the door.Â
As soon as they slammed the door shut behind them, loud pounding came from outside.Â
“Open up, Emily. Hurry. The zombies are right behind us!” someone yelled.Â
Emily hesitated, shooting a nervous look at Chloe. She bit her lip and said nothing in the end.Â
The girl outside grew more hysterical, slamming her foot against the door. “Emily, open up, or I swear you’ll regret it!”Â
Emily jumped, her nerves on edge. She was always timid, and that threat nearly made her reach for the door handle.Â
At that moment, Chloe threw the door open, raised the axe, and swung it wildly at the girl who’d been screaming outside.Â
If the girl hadn’t jumped back quickly, Chloe would’ve split her head open. When she saw Chloe’s sharp, menacing look, her blood ran cold, and she shrank back, terrified.Â
“Instead of banging on doors and attracting zombies, you’d better find an empty dorm to hide in,” Chloe said.Â
The girl shot Emily a venomous glare before storming off. “So you think you’re all that now, huh? Got yourself a big shot to back you up?”Â
Emily flinched, gritted her teeth, and stayed silent.Â
Chloe locked the door behind them, quickly scanned the room, and then collapsed onto the bed with a heavy sigh.Â
Emily bolted straight for the bathroom, nearly pissing herself from fright. “Chloe, what do we do now? That girl is not gonna let this slide,” she said, shivering so hard that she could barely speak.Â
Chloe shot her a glare. “If she wants trouble, let’s see if I’m in the mood to let her walk away.”Â

She glanced around the dorm room. Everything was still here, like the sheets, blankets, and clothes. It looked like everyone just grabbed their toiletries and makeup over winter break and left everything elseÂ
behind.Â
She opened the cabinet and found it packed with snacks. There were two boxes of instant noodles, a box of crunchy noodles, and even a couple of ready–to–eat meals.Â
She turned and noticed two large water jugs at her feet, plus the dispenser still had half a jug left.Â
“Is this your dorm?” Chloe asked, remembering Emily had unlocked the door with her own key.Â
There was the sound of a toilet flushing, and Emily came out looking flustered. “Yeah, this is my room. I’ve got a ton of snacks hidden in the cabinet.”Â
She squinted as she spoke. Both her parents were gone, so she’d grown up with her uncle and aunt. Money was always tight, so she skipped the cafeteria and lived off cheap food. That was why she was so thin and malnourished.Â
The room had four beds. Chloe peeled off her jacket, which was covered in zombie blood, and rummaged through the cabinet until she found a set of pajamas to change into.Â
“We’re on the twelfth floor. Regular zombies don’t make it this high. Let’s get some sleep, Chloe said, closing her eyes. But then, a small body wriggled under the covers next to her. “What are you doing?” Chloe asked.Â
Emily shivered and asked, “I’m scared. Can I sleep with you?”Â
Chloe shook her head. “This is a single bed, and I don’t do sleepovers. Besides, if anyone gets too close to me while I’m asleep, I might kill.”Â
Emily squeaked, startled, and she quickly scrambled back to her own bed, burrowing under the covers.Â
The room suddenly went dead silent.Â
“Emily,” Chloe said softly.Â
“Yeah?” Emily mumbled.Â
“Why did you tell me to run first?” Chloe asked. They had just met, and Chloe couldn’t believe Emily would risk herself for her.Â
Emily was already half–asleep and slurred, “I wasn’t gonna outrun anything anyway. If one of us gets out alive, that’s good enough.”Â
She paused, and then her tiny voice came back. “Besides, I think you’re a good person. If I end up dead, I know you’d get revenge for me…”Â
Her words trailed off as she drifted into sleep, still muttering as if she were trapped in a nightmare.Â
Chloe was speechless. ‘Me? A good person? Seriously? Who’s she calling good? In this apocalypse, being called a good person is a curse. Good people never last, but the worst ones always stick around. I’d rather be the villain than end up dead, she thought.Â
She childishly muttered toward Emily’s bed, “I’m a bad person.” Then she finally closed her eyes and fell asleep.Â

Meanwhile, in the room next door, the four girls slammed the door shut and locked it, huddling together in fear. One of them was so terrified that she actually wet herself.Â
“That bitch Emily! How dare she lock me out? I’m going to make her regret it,” one of the girls hissed, her voice trembling with anger.Â

“Calm down for now. Let’s see if there’s anything we can use in here,” another girl said.Â

They ransacked the room, but aside from the half–empty water jug on the dispenser, there wasn’t a single scrap of food to be found.Â
“What are we supposed to do? There’s nothing to eat!” one of them whimpered.Â
They’d been running for their lives for hours, and now their stomachs were empty. Their hunger was so intense that it felt like their ribs were about to break through their skin.Â
One of the girls noticed the half–full water jug, grabbed a cup, and drank it down in one go.Â
Before she could finish, a tall girl yanked her hand away. “Simone, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”Â
Simone shot her a glare, pulling the cup back. “This is all we have. Once it’s gone, that’s it.”Â
“But I’m starving!” the girl whined.Â
“Bear with it,” Simone snapped.Â
In the end, each of them only got a single cup of water. They ripped up a bedsheet, tying the strips around their waists, hoping it would ease the hunger so they could get some sleep.Â

Late that night, screams echoed through the building, loud enough to shake the walls. By morning, none of the people in the cafeteria had made it out alive.Â
Chloe had been right. Without blood to draw them in, the zombies couldn’t make it to the twelfth floor. Anyone who was up here was safe for now.Â
Thank god the national power grid was still running. Even with the apocalypse in full swing, it could keep going for about three months.Â
The dorm was warm, so Chloe slept well through the night. At dawn, she crawled out of bed in her thick pajamas and wandered over to the window. Outside, snowflakes were falling so heavily that it was impossible to see anything beyond a white blur.Â
