Chapter 121

As soon as Aurelia heard his voice, her pretty brows scrunched up instinctively.

There was an unmistakable physical disgust on her face.

Why are you here?Aurelia asked, her tone sharp with annoyance.

Aurelia had really had enough.

She started thinking maybe it was time to look for a new place.

Ever since they broke up, Cassian had been turning up here more in the past few months than he ever did in the whole seven years they were together.

Back then, Aurelia thought she had Cassian all figured out.

But lately, it turned out she didn’t know Cassian half as well as she thought.

Just look at all the strange stuff Cassian’d been pulling lately.

Even in the dim light, Cassian’s profile had a bit of a frosty edge.

His voice was bland, almost indifferent. Abigail asked me to bring you some king crabs.”

Aurelia finally noticed the box he was carrying.

Cassian said, Abigail sent you a message.”

Aurelia pulled out her phone to check.

The message had been sent in the afternoon, but she’d been so busy at work that she hadn’t noticed it.

Abigail had messaged her on WhatsApp, saying the king crabs had just been flown in and were fresh. She knew Aurelia loved them, so she’d saved two for her.

But Abigail had also said she was planning to bring them over herself.

Somehow, in the end, it was Cassian who showed up with the crabs.

Since it was Abigail’s thoughtful gesture, Aurelia accepted them without protest.

She took the box and walked away, not even bothering to thank Cassian.

Cassian let out a soft, mocking laugh. So now I’m just your errand boy, huh?”

Aurelia shot back, With an attitude like yours, you wouldn’t last a day as an errand boy.”

Aurelia pressed the elevator button, not sparing him a single glance. All she wanted was to get home.

:

They stood in silence for a few seconds while they waited for the elevator.

What was there even to say?

There was nothing left to say.

But Cassian didn’t look like he was leaving anytime soon. Right before the elevator hit the first floor, he suddenly blurted out, Are you going to pick Gideon?”

Aurelia paused, frowning as she shot Cassian a sideways glance.

He was halfsquinting in the shadows, his eyes dark and unreadable.

Did you get wasted on knockoff booze again?Aurelia snapped.

Her sarcasm was even sharper than before.

Cassian ignored her jab and went on, The Quinn family would never accept someone like you as their daughterinlaw. You need to face reality.”

Her eyes narrowed. Someone like me? Go on, Cassian, enlighten me. What am I, exactly?”

The elevator doors slid open, but Aurelia didn’t step inside. Instead, she shot Cassian a frosty glare.

Cassian’s voice was low and cold, giving her a mocking look. Don’t play dumb. You know what I’m talking about.”

Aurelia snorted, her voice cutting and sharp. So you’re saying just because I was with you, I’m not cleananymore, huh?”

Cassian frowned, opening his mouth to retort.

But Aurelia cut him off before he could get a word out.

If a girl is supposed to be pureuntil she sleeps with a guy, then tell me, Cassian. What exactly is supposed to be ‘taintedhere?Aurelia shot back, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

If there’s no connection, every word is wasted.

Aurelia wasn’t about to waste another second on Cassian.

She turned and stepped into the elevator, firing off a quick message to Abigail: [Abigail, got the king crabs. Thanks so much for your kindness!]

Abigail must have been glued to her phone, because she replied almost instantly: [You just got them? Cassian must have been waiting for ages. How is he? Is he okay?]

Aurelia was just about to say he was fine.

But suddenly, there was a loud crash outside.

It sounded like something had just hit the floor hard.

At the same time, another message from Abigail popped up: [Cassian’s running a high fever. You know how stubborn he is. He never wants to see a doctor, no matter how much I try to talk him into it]

When Cassian finally awoke, he found himself lying in a hospital bed.

A nurse was hooking him up to an IV, giving Aurelia the usual instructions like she was talking to a family member. We’ve given him a fever reducer. Keep an eye on his temperature. This is an antibiotic drip, so we need to keep it slow. If it goes too fast, he’ll feel uncomfortable.”

Aurelia replied flatly, Just speed it up.”

The nurse blinked in surprise. Isn’t he your friend?”

Exboyfriend,” Aurelia said, her tone icy.

The nurse just stared at her, lost for words.

Maybe she was feeling a little sympathetic toward Aurelia, because she actually sped up the IV drip.

Cassian’s hand was aching so badly he couldn’t keep up the act anymore. He forced himself to sit up in bed.

Aurelia sat in the chair beside him. Seeing he was awake, she reminded him in a flat tone, Don’t fidget. If the IV comes loose, the nurse will come back and fix it. Don’t make her work harder than she has to.”

Cassian’s throat was so parched that his words came out rough and raspy. Didn’t you leave? Thought you’d be long gone.”

Knowing her, she’d never stick around taking care of him.

Getting him to the hospital was already going above and beyond.

So, when Cassian opened his eyes and saw her still there, his expression shifted, betraying a surge of emotion.

Almost like he was waiting for something.

But Aurelia shot down his wishful thinking without a second thought.

Trust me, I wanted to bail, but there was no one else to hand you off to, and the nurse wouldn’t let me leave, she said, her voice cold and detached.

With things as they were, Aurelia had no choice but to call 911.

The ambulance showed up in no time.

Cassian was still out cold, and the paramedic insisted someone had to ride along with him.

The hospital needed someone who could provide Cassian’s medical history and personal details, including any drug allergies.

Aurelia knew every detail by heart.

Cassian fell silent for a moment, then reached over and slowed the IV drip himself.

Aurelia glanced at her watch. Since you’re awake, you can keep an eye on it yourself. I’m leaving now.”

As she stood up, she added, Oh, I already let Tessa know. She should be on her way, so just sit tight.”

She didn’t wait for Cassian to say a word before walking out.

When Aurelia got home, she picked up the king crabs from the security booth. But when she opened the box, she noticed the color looked off.

She quickly snapped a photo and sent it to Abigail: [Abigail, do the king crabs look spoiled to you?]

Abigail replied right away: [Oh, no. They are definitely bad! Did you forget to put them in the fridge? Toss them out. You can’t eat crabs once they’re gone bad!]

Aurelia couldn’t help cursing Cassian out, totally pissed off.

Seriously? Of all the times, he just had to keel over right then and ruin the perfectly good crabs for nothing!she grumbled.

Early the next morning, Aurelia got Miranda to help her apartment hunt.

Her only requirements were close to work and with a hasslefree commute.

As for the budgetShe was ready to spend more than she used to.

Miranda spent all morning looking, but nothing really worked out. In the end, she said, Aurelia, why not just buy a place? The market’s pretty good for buyers right now.”

Aurelia was still weighing her options.

Just then, another 100 million dollars landed in her company account.

Same as before, it was transferred straight from Cassian’s personal account.

Aurelia didn’t even hesitate. Buy it! Get me a huge penthouse! I love big places!”

You got it!Miranda replied, already fired up and ready to start hunting for the perfect place.

Even with a total of 300 million dollars in her account, Aurelia still had to budget carefully.

The port renovation project was worth about 30 billion dollars. To even qualify for the bid, she had to prove she had enough capital.

The requirement was to show assets worth 5 to 10 percent of the total project value.

Chapter 121

So basically, she needed at least 1.5 billion dollars in assets just to even get her foot at the door.

Which meant it was time to start pulling in more investment.

Just as Aurelia was getting frustrated, Miranda sent over a few apartment listings. [These look perfect. They’re exactly what you wanted.]

But the moment Aurelia saw the price tags, her excitement fizzled out. [Never mind, I’ll just stick to renting for now.]

Just as the workday was wrapping up, Miranda called on the intercom. Boss, Mr. Locke from Honoria Capital is here to see you.”

Aurelia didn’t even bother to look up. Tell him I don’t have time for him.”

Miranda lowered her voice. Did you forget he scheduled this a week ago?”

Aurelia was silent.
